Recently, we showed that the self-field transport critical current, Ic(sf), of a superconducting wire can be defined in a more fundamental way than the conventional (and arbitrary) electric field criterion, Ec = 1 microV/cm. We defined Ic(sf) as the threshold current, Ic,B, at which the perpendicular component of the local magnetic flux density, measured at any point on the surface of a high-temperature superconducting tape, abruptly crosses over from a non-linear to a linear dependence with increasing transport current. This effect results from the current distribution across the tape width progressively transitioning from non-uniform to uniform. The completion of this progressive transition was found to be singular. It coincides with the first discernible onset of dissipation and immediately precedes the formation of a measureable electric field. Here, we show that the same Ic,B definition of critical currents applies in the presence of an external applied magnetic field. In all experimental data presented here Ic,B is found to be significantly (10-30%) lower than Ic,E determined by the common electric field criterion of Ec = 1 microV/cm, and Ec to be up to 50 times lower at Ic,B than at Ic,E.

A magnetic field relaxation at the center of a pulse-magnetized single-domain Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductor at 78K has been studied. In case of a weak magnetization, the magnetic flux density increases logarithmically and normalized relaxation rate define d as S=-d(lnB)/d(lnt) is negative (S=-0.037). When an external magnetic field magnitude increases, the relaxation rate first decreases in absolute value, then changes sign (becomes positive, S>0) and after reaching some maximum finally reduces to a very small value. Non-monotonous dependence of S vs Ha is explained by a non-homogeneous local temperature distribution during a pulse magnetization.

Recent neutron scattering experiments in the superconducting state of YBCO have been interpreted in terms of a magnetic collective mode whose dispersion relative to the commensurate wavevector has a curvature opposite in sign to a conventional magnon dispersion. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that simple linear response calculations are in support of a collective mode interpretation, and to explain why the dispersion has the curvature it does.

The determination of the most appropriate starting point for the theoretical description of Fe-based materials hosting high temperature superconductivity remains among the most important unsolved problem in this relatively new field. Most of the work to date has focused on the pnictides, with LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2 and LiFeAs being representative parent compounds of three families known as 1111, 122 and 111, respectively. This Topic Review examines recent progress in this area, with particular emphasis on the implication of experimental data which have provided evidence for the presence of electron itinerancy and the detection of local spin moments. In light of the results presented, the necessity of a theoretical framework contemplating the presence and the interplay between itinerant electrons and large spin moments is discussed. It is argued that the physics at the heart of the macroscopic properties of pnictides Fe-based high temperature superconductors appears to be far more complex and interesting than initially predicted.
We present the first experimental results of the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ of the newly discovered F-doped superconductor LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs (F-LaOFeAs) by global and local magnetization measurements. It is found that $H_{c1}$ showed an cle ar linear-$T$ dependence down to a temperature of 2 K, indicative of an unconventional pairing symmetry with a nodal gap function. Based on the d-wave model, we estimated a maximum gap value $Delta_0=4.0 pm 0.6$ meV, in consistent with the recent specific heat and point-contact tunneling measurements. Taking the demagnetization factor into account, the absolute value of $H_{c1}(0)$ is determined to be about 54 Oe, manifesting a low superfluid density for LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs.

Since the discovery of high-Tc LaO_1-xF_xFeAs, and other such systems based on FeAs layers, several proposals have been made for the superconducting order parameter Delta_k, on both phenomenological and microscopic grounds. Here we discuss how the sy mmetry of Delta_k in the bulk can be determined, assuming that single crystals will soon be available. We suggest that a measurement of the dependence of the low temperature specific heat on the angle of a magnetic field in the FeAs plane is the simplest such method, and calculate representative specific heat vs. field angle oscillations for the various candidate states, using a phenomenological band structure fitted to the DFT Fermi surface.
