The Vietoris monad on the category of compact Hausdorff spaces is a topological analogue of the power-set monad on the category of sets. Exploiting Manes characterisation of the compact Hausdorff spaces as algebras for the ultrafilter monad on sets, we give precise form to the above analogy by exhibiting the Vietoris monad as induced by a weak distributive law, in the sense of Bohm, of the power-set monad over the ultrafilter monad.

Motivated by recent work on weak distributive laws and their applications to coalgebraic semantics, we investigate the algebraic nature of semialgebras for a monad. These are algebras for the underlying functor of the monad subject to the associativi ty axiom alone-the unit axiom from the definition of an Eilenberg-Moore algebras is dropped. We prove that if the underlying category has coproducts, then semialgebras for a monad M are in fact the Eilenberg-Moore algebras for a suitable monad structure on the functor id + M , which we call the semifree monad M^s. We also provide concrete algebraic presentations for semialgebras for the maybe monad, the semigroup monad and the finite distribution monad. A second contribution is characterizing the weak distributive laws of the form M T $Rightarrow$ T M as strong distributive laws M^s T $Rightarrow$ T M^s subject to an additional condition.
We introduce a general construction on 2-monads. We develop background on maps of 2-monads, their left semi-algebras, and colimits in 2-category. Then, we introduce the construction of a colimit induced by a map of 2-monads, show that we obtain the s tructure of a 2-monad and give a characterisation of its algebras. Finally, we apply the construction to the map of 2-monads between free symmetric monoidal and the free cartesian 2-monads and combine them into a linear-non-linear 2-monad.
An adjunction is a pair of functors related by a pair of natural transformations, and relating a pair of categories. It displays how a structure, or a concept, projects from each category to the other, and back. Adjunctions are the common denominator of Galois connections, representation theories, spectra, and generalized quantifiers. We call an adjunction nuclear when its categories determine each other. We show that every adjunction can be resolved into a nuclear adjunction. The resolution is idempotent in a strict sense. The resulting nucleus displays the concept that was implicit in the original adjunction, just as the singular value decomposition of an adjoint pair of linear operators displays their canonical bases. [snip] In his seminal early work, Ross Street described an adjunction between monads and comonads in 2-categories. Lifting the nucleus construction, we show that the resulting Street monad on monads is strictly idempotent, and extracts the nucleus of a monad. A dual treatment achieves the same for comonads. This uncovers remarkably concrete applications behind a notable fragment of pure 2-category theory. The other way around, driven by the tasks and methods of machine learning and data analysis, the nucleus construction also seems to uncover remarkably pure and general mathematical content lurking behind the daily practices of network computation and data analysis.

We establish a topological duality for bounded lattices. The two main features of our duality are that it generalizes Stone duality for bounded distributive lattices, and that the morphisms on either side are not the standard ones. A positive consequ ence of the choice of morphisms is that those on the topological side are functional. Towards obtaining the topological duality, we develop a universal construction which associates to an arbitrary lattice two distributive lattice envelopes with a Galois connection between them. This is a modification of a construction of the injective hull of a semilattice by Bruns and Lakser, adjusting their concept of admissibility to the finitary case. Finally, we show that the dual spaces of the distributive envelopes of a lattice coincide with completions of quasi-uniform spaces naturally associated with the lattice, thus giving a precise spatial meaning to the distributive envelopes.
In this article a sequential theory in the category of spaces and proper maps is described and developed. As a natural extension a sequential theory for exterior spaces and maps is obtained.
