In this paper, we present BVRI imaging data of NGC 613. We use these data to determine the corotation radius of the bar, using the photometric phase crossing method. This method uses the phase angle of the spiral structure in several wavebands, and looks for a crossing between the blue (B) light and the redder wavebands (e.g., R or I). For NGC 613, we find two phase crossings, an outer phase crossing at 136 +/- 8 arcsec and an inner phase crossing at 16 +/- 8 arcsec. We argue that the outer phase crossing is due to the bar corotation radius, and from the bar length of $R_{rm bar}=90.0pm4.0$ arcsec we go on to calculate a relative bar pattern speed of R = 1.5 +/- 0.1, which is consistent with the results of previous methods described in the literature. For a better understanding of the inner phase crossing, we have created structure maps in all four wavebands and a B-R color map. All of our structure maps and our color map highlight a nuclear ring of star formation at a radius of ~4 arcsec, which had also been observed recently using ALMA. Furthermore, the radius of our inner phase crossing appears to be consistent with the size of a nuclear disk of star formation that has been recently detected and described in the literature. We therefore suggest that the phase crossing method can be used to detect the size of nuclear star formation regions as well as the location of corotation resonances in spiral galaxies.

In this paper, we apply a method identified by Puerari & Dottori (1997) to find the corotation radii (CR) in spiral galaxies. We apply our method to 57 galaxies, 17 of which have already have their CR locations determined using other methods. The met hod we adopted entails taking Fourier transforms along radial cuts in the u, g, r, i, and z wavebands and comparing the phase angles as a function of radius between them. The radius at which the phase angles cross indicates the location of the corotation radius. We then calculated the relative bar pattern speed, $mathcal{R}$, and classified the bar as fast, where $mathcal{R} < 1.4$, slow, where $mathcal{R} geq 1.4$, or intermediate, where the errors on $mathcal{R}$ are consistent with the bar being slow or fast. For the 17 galaxies that had their CR locations previously measured, we found that our results were consistent with the values of $mathcal{R}$ obtained by the computer simulations of Rautiainen, Salo & Laurikainen (2008). For the larger sample, our results indicate that 34 out of 57 galaxies (~60%) have fast bars. We discuss these results in the context of its implications for dark matter concentrations in disk galaxies. We also discuss these results in the context of different models for spiral structure in disk galaxies.

NGC 205 is a dwarf elliptical galaxy which shows many features that are more typical of disk galaxies, and our recent study of the central stellar population has added another peculiarity. In the central regions, star formation has been on-going cont inuously for a few hundred Myr, until ca. 20 Myr ago, perhaps fed by gas funneled to the center in the course of morphological transformation. In this contribution we use a deep, wide-field image obtained at a scale of 2/px to show that subtle structures can be detected in and near the body of the dwarf galaxy. The southern tidal tail can be mapped out to unprecedented distances from the center, and we suggest that the northern tail is partially hidden behind a very extended dust lane, or ring, belonging to M31. A spiral pattern emerges across the body of the galaxy, but it might be explained by another M31 dust filament.
To further understand the origins of and physical processes operating in extra-planar gas, we present observations and kinematic models of HI in the two nearby, edge-on spiral galaxies NGC 3044 and NGC 4302. We model NGC 3044 as a single, thick disk. Substantial amounts of extra-planar HI are also detected. We detect a decrease in rotation speed with height (a lag) that shallows radially, reaching zero at approximately R25. The large-scale kinematic asymmetry of the approaching and receding halves suggests a recent disturbance. The kinematics and morphology of NGC 4302, a Virgo Cluster member, are greatly disturbed. We model NGC 4302 as a combination of a thin disk and a second, thicker disk, the latter having a hole near the center. We detect lagging extra-planar gas, with indications of shallowing in the receding half, although its characteristics are difficult to constrain. A bridge is detected between NGC 4302 and its companion, NGC 4298. We explore trends involving the extra-planar HI kinematics of these galaxies, as well as galaxies throughout the literature, as well as possible connections between lag properties with star formation and environment. Measured lags are found to be significantly steeper than those modeled by purely ballistic effects, indicating additional factors. Radial shallowing of extra-planar lags is typical and occurs between 0.5R25 and R25, suggesting internal processes are important in dictating extra-planar kinematics.

Deep optical imaging with both Hyper Suprime-Cam and Suprime-Cam on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope reveals a number of outer faint structures around the archetypical Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 (M 77). We find three ultra diffuse objects (UDOs) around NGC 10 68. Since these UDOs are located within the projected distance of 45 kpc from the center of NGC 1068, they appear to be associated with NGC 1068. Hereafter, we call them UDO-SW, UDO-NE, and UDO-SE where UDO = Ultra Diffuse Object, SW = south west, NE = north west, and SE = south east; note that UDO-SE was already found in the SDSS Stripe 82 data. Among them, both UDO-NE and UDO-SW appear to show a loop or stream structure around the main body of NGC 1068, providing evidence for the physical connection to NGC 1068. We consider that UDO-SE may be a tidal dwarf galaxy. We also find another UDO-like object that is 2 magnitudes fainter and smaller by a factor of 3 to 5 than those of the three UDOs. This object may belong to a class of low surface brightness galaxy. Since this object is located along the line connecting UDO-NE and UDO-SW, it is suggested that this object is related to the past interaction event that formed the loop by UDO-NE and UDO-SW, thus implying the physical connection to NGC 1068. Another newly-discovered feature is an asymmetric outer one-arm structure emanated from the western edge of the outermost disk of NGC 1068 together with a ripple-like structure at the opposite side. These structures are expected to arise in a late phase of a minor merger according to published numerical simulations of minor mergers. All these lines of evidence show that NGC 1068 experienced a minor merger several billions years ago. We then discuss the minor-merger driven triggering of nuclear activity in the case of NGC 1068.
An important dynamic parameter of barred galaxies is the bar pattern speed. Among several methods that are used for the determination of the pattern speed the Tremaine-Weinberg method has the advantage of model independency and accuracy. In this work we apply the method to a simulated bar including gas dynamics and study the effect of 2D spectroscopy data quality on robustness of the method. We added a white noise and a Gaussian random field to the data and measured the corresponding errors in the pattern speed. We found that a signal to noise ratio in surface density ~5 introduces errors of ~20% for the Gaussian noise, while for the white noise the corresponding errors reach ~50%. At the same time the velocity field is less sensitive to contamination. On the basis of the performed study we applied the method to the NGC 3367 spiral galaxy using H{alpha} Fabry-Perot interferometry data. We found for the pattern speed 43 pm 6 km/s/kpc for this galaxy.
