Owing to the versatility in their chemical and physical properties, transition metal perovskite oxides have emerged as a new category of highly efficient photocatalysts for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Here, to understand the underlying mechanism for the enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting in mixed perovskites, we explore ideal epitaxial thin films of the BiFeO3-SrTiO3 system. The electronic struture and carrier dynamics are determined from both experiment and density-functional theory calculations. The intrinsic phenomena are measured in this ideal sytem, contrasting to commonly studied polycrstalline solid solutions where extrinsic structural features obscure the intrinsic phenomena. We determined that when SrTiO3 is added to BiFeO3 the conduction band minimum position is raised and an exponential tail of trap states from hybridized Ti 3d and Fe 3d orbitals emerges near the conduction band edge. The presence of these trap states strongly suppresses the fast electron-hole recombination and improves the photocurrent density in the visible-light region, up to 16 times at 0 VRHE compared to the pure end member compositions. Our work provides a new design approach for optimising the photoelectrochemical performance in mixed perovksite oxides.

Recent rapid progress in efficiencies for solar water splitting by photoelectrochemical devices has enhanced its prospects to enable storable renewable energy. Efficient solar fuel generators all use tandem photoelectrode structures, and advanced int egrated devices incorporate corrosion protection layers as well as heterogeneous catalysts. Realization of near thermodynamic limiting performance requires tailoring the energy band structure of the photoelectrode and also the optical and electronic properties of the surface layers exposed to the electrolyte. Here, we report a monolithic device architecture that exhibits reduced surface reflectivity in conjunction with metallic Rh nanoparticle catalyst layers that minimize parasitic light absorption. Additionally, the anatase TiO2 protection layer on the photocathode creates a favorable internal band alignment for hydrogen evolution. An initial solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 19.3 % is obtained in acidic electrolyte and an efficiency of 18.5 % is achieved at neutral pH condition (under simulated sunlight).
With their broad range of magnetic, electronic and structural properties, transition metal perovskite oxides ABO3 have long served as a platform for testing condensed matter theories. In particular, their insulating character - found in most compound s - is often ascribed to dynamical electronic correlations through the celebrated Mott-Hubbard mechanism where gaping arises from a uniform, symmetry-preserving electron repulsion mechanism. However, structural distortions are ubiquitous in perovskites and their relevance with respect to dynamical correlations in producing this rich array of properties remains an open question. Here, we address the origin of band gap opening in the whole family of 3d perovskite oxides. We show that a single-determinant mean-field approach such as density functional theory (DFT) successfully describes the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of the whole series, at low and high temperatures. We find that insulation occurs via energy-lowering crystal symmetry reduction (octahedral rotations, Jahn-Teller and bond disproportionation effects), as well as intrinsic electronic instabilities, all lifting orbital degeneracies. Our work therefore suggests that whereas ABO3 oxides may be complicated, they are not necessarily strongly correlated. It also opens the way towards systematic investigations of doping and defect physics in perovskites, essential for the full realization of oxide-based electronics.
The present work reports on the enhancement of TiO2 nanotubes photoelectrochemical water splitting rate by decorating the nanostructure with an amine layer in a hydrothermal process using diethylenetriamine (DETA). The aminate coated TiO2 tubes show a stable improvement of the photoresponse in both UV and visible light spectrum and under hydrothermal conditions, 4-fold increase of the photoelectrochemical water splitting rate is observed. From intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) measurements significantly faster electron transport times are observed indicating a surface passivating effect of the N-decoration.
In transition metal perovskites (ABO3) most physical properties are tunable by structural parameters such as the rotation of the BO6 octahedra. Examples include the Neel temperature of orthoferrites, the conductivity of mixed-valence manganites, or t he band gap of rare-earth scandates. Since oxides often host large internal electric dipoles and can accommodate heavy elements, they also emerge as prime candidates to display Rashba spin-orbit coupling, through which charge and spin currents may be efficiently interconverted. However, despite a few experimental reports in SrTiO3-based interface systems, the Rashba interaction has been little studied in these materials, and its interplay with structural distortions remain unknown. In this Letter, we identify a bismuth-based perovskite with a giant, electrically-switchable Rashba interaction whose amplitude can be controlled by both the ferroelectric polarization and the breathing mode of oxygen octahedra. This particular structural parameter arises from the strongly covalent nature of the Bi-O bonds, reminiscent of the situation in perovskite nickelates. Our results not only provide novel strategies to craft agile spin-charge converters but also highlight the relevance of covalence as a powerful handle to design emerging properties in complex oxides.
We report a theoretical study of the non-linear magnetoelectric response of GdFeO$_3$ through an analytical approach combined with a Heisenberg model which is fitted against first-principles calculations. Our theory reproduces the non-linear change o f polarization under applied magnetic field reported experimentally such that it allows to analyze the origin of the large responses in the different directions. We show that the non-linear character of the response in these materials originates from the fact that the antiferromagnetic order of Gd atoms changes non-linearly with respect to the applied magnetic field. Our model can be generalized to other materials in which the antiferromagnetic ordering breaks inversion symmetry.
