Galaxies are believed to experience star formation and black hole driven nuclear activity symbiotically. The symbiosis may be more extreme in the distant universe, as far-infrared photometry with the Herschel Space Observatory has found many cases of ultra-luminous cool dust emission in z>1 radio galaxies and quasars, which could have its origin in the central black hole activity, or in extreme starbursts. We here present strong evidence for an extreme circumnuclear starburst in the z=1.439 quasar 3C298. Our unparalleled 0.18 arcsecond resolution ALMA image at rest-frame 410micrometer wavelength shows that the ~40K dust in its host galaxy resides in an asymmetric circumnuclear structure. The morphology of this structure implies a starburst origin and a symbiotic physical relation with the AGN driven radio source. The symbiosis is likely to be a general property of distant massive galaxies.

Context. Submillimeter Array (SMA) 870 micron polarization observations of the hot molecular core G31.41+0.31 revealed one of the clearest examples up to date of an hourglass-shaped magnetic field morphology in a high-mass star-forming region. Aims. To better establish the role that the magnetic field plays in the collapse of G31.41+0.31, we carried out Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the polarized dust continuum emission at 1.3 mm with an angular resolution four times higher than that of the previous (sub)millimeter observations to achieve an unprecedented image of the magnetic field morphology. Methods. We used ALMA to perform full polarization observations at 233 GHz (Band 6). The resulting synthesized beam is 0.28x020 which, at the distance of the source, corresponds to a spatial resolution of ~875 au. Results. The observations resolve the structure of the magnetic field in G31.41+0.31 and allow us to study the field in detail. The polarized emission in the Main core of G31.41+0.41is successfully fit with a semi-analytical magnetostatic model of a toroid supported by magnetic fields. The best fit model suggests that the magnetic field is well represented by a poloidal field with a possible contribution of a toroidal component of ~10% of the poloidal component, oriented southeast to northwest at ~ -44 deg and with an inclination of ~-45 degr. The magnetic field is oriented perpendicular to the northeast to southwest velocity gradient detected in this core on scales from 1E3-1E4 au. This supports the hypothesis that the velocity gradient is due to rotation and suggests that such a rotation has little effect on the magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic field estimated in the central region of the core with the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method is ~8-13 mG and implies that the mass-to-flux ratio in this region is slightly supercritical ...
Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are gravitationally bound condensations of gas and stars formed during galaxy interactions. Here we present multi-configuration ALMA observations of J1023+1952, a TDG in the interacting system Arp 94, where we resolve CO(2 -1) emission down to giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at 0.64 ~ 45pc resolution. We find a remarkably high fraction of extended molecular emission (~80-90%), which is filtered out by the interferometer and likely traces diffuse gas. We detect 111 GMCs that give a similar mass spectrum as those in the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies (a truncated power law with slope of -1.76+/-0.13). We also study Larsons laws over the available dynamic range of GMC properties (~2 dex in mass and ~1 dex in size): GMCs follow the size-mass relation of the Milky Way, but their velocity dispersion is higher such that the size-linewidth and virial relations appear super-linear, deviating from the canonical values. The global molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is very high (~1) while the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratio is quite low (~0.5), and both quantities vary from north to south. Star formation is predominantly taking place in the south of the TDG, where we observe projected offsets between GMCs and young stellar clusters ranging from ~50pc to ~200pc; the largest offsets correspond to the oldest knots, as seen in other galaxies. In the quiescent north, we find more molecular clouds and a higher molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (~1.5); atomic and diffuse molecular gas also have a higher velocity dispersion there. Overall, the organisation of the molecular ISM in this TDG is quite different from other types of galaxies on large scales, but the properties of GMCs seem fairly similar, pointing to near universality of the star-formation process on small scales.
We present high resolution (0.3) Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) 870um imaging of five z~1.5-4.5 X-ray detected AGN with luminosities of L(2-8keV)>10^42 erg/s. These data provide a >~20x improvement in spatial resolution over single-dish rest-f rame FIR measurements. The sub-millimetre emission is extended on scales of FWHM~0.2-0.5, corresponding to physical sizes of 1-3 kpc (median value of 1.8 kpc). These sizes are comparable to the majority of z=1-5 sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) with equivalent ALMA measurements. In combination with spectral energy distribution analyses, we attribute this rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) emission to dust heated by star formation. The implied star-formation rate surface densities are ~20-200 Mo/yr/kpc^2, which are consistent with SMGs of comparable FIR luminosities (i.e., L(IR)~[1-5]x10^(12)Lo). Although limited by a small sample of AGN, which all have high FIR luminosities, our study suggests that the kpc-scale spatial distribution and surface density of star formation in high-redshift star-forming galaxies is the same irrespective of the presence of X-ray detected AGN.
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO lines and dust continuum emission of the source RCSGA 032727--132609, a young $z=1.7$ low-metallicity starburst galaxy. The CO(3-2) and CO(6-5) lines, and continuum at rest-fr ame $450,mu m$ are detected and show a resolved structure in the image plane. We use the corresponding lensing model to obtain a source plane reconstruction of the detected emissions revealing intrinsic flux density of $S_{450,mu m}=23.5_{-8.1}^{+26.8}$ $mu$Jy and intrinsic CO luminosities $L_{rm CO(3-2)}=2.90_{-0.23}^{+0.21}times10^{8}$ ${rm K,km,s^{-1},pc^{2}}$ and $L_{rm CO(6-5)}=8.0_{-1.3}^{+1.4}times10^{7}$ ${rm K,km,s^{-1},pc^{2}}$. We used the resolved properties in the source plane to obtain molecular gas and star-formation rate surface densities of $Sigma_{rm H2}=16.2_{-3.5}^{+5.8},{rm M}_{odot},{rm pc}^{-2}$ and $Sigma_{rm SFR}=0.54_{-0.27}^{+0.89},{rm M}_{odot},{rm yr}^{-1},{rm kpc}^{-2}$ respectively. The intrinsic properties of RCSGA 032727--132609 show an enhanced star-formation activity compared to local spiral galaxies with similar molecular gas densities, supporting the ongoing merger-starburst phase scenario. RCSGA 032727--132609 also appears to be a low--density starburst galaxy similar to local blue compact dwarf galaxies, which have been suggested as local analogs to high-redshift low-metallicity starburst systems. Finally, the CO excitation level in the galaxy is consistent with having the peak at ${rm J}sim5$, with a higher excitation concentrated in the star-forming clumps.

We present spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) [CII] observations of the z=4.7555 submillimetre galaxy, ALESS 73.1. Our 0.5 FWHM map resolves the [CII] emitting gas which is centred close to the active galactic nucl eus (AGN). The gas kinematics are dominated by rotation but with high turbulence, v_rot/sigma_int~3.1, and a Toomre Q parameter <1 throughout the disk. By fitting three independent thin rotating disk models to our data, we derive a total dynamical mass of 3+-2x10^10 M_sol. This is close to the molecular gas mass derived from previous CO(2-1) observations, and implies a CO to H_2 conversion factor alpha_CO<2.3M_sol(K km/s/pc^2)^-1. The mass budget also constrains the stellar mass to <3.1x10^10 M_sol, and entails a gas fraction of f_gas>~0.4. The diameter of the dust continuum emission is <2 kpc, while the star-formation rate is as high as 1000 M_sol/yr. Combined with our stellar mass constraint, this implies an extreme specific star formation rate >80 Gyr^{-1}, especially since there are no clear indications of recent merger activity. Finally, our high signal-to-noise [CII] measurement revises the observed [NII]/[CII] ratio, which suggests a close to solar metallicity, unless the [CII] flux contains significant contributions from HII regions. Our observations suggest that ALESS73.1 is a nascent galaxy undergoing its first major burst of star formation, embedded within an unstable but metal-rich gas disk.
