Visual understanding of 3D environments in real-time, at low power, is a huge computational challenge. Often referred to as SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping), it is central to applications spanning domestic and industrial robotics, autonomous vehicles, virtual and augmented reality. This paper describes the results of a major research effort to assemble the algorithms, architectures, tools, and systems software needed to enable delivery of SLAM, by supporting applications specialists in selecting and configuring the appropriate algorithm and the appropriate hardware, and compilation pathway, to meet their performance, accuracy, and energy consumption goals. The major contributions we present are (1) tools and methodology for systematic quantitative evaluation of SLAM algorithms, (2) automated, machine-learning-guided exploration of the algorithmic and implementation design space with respect to multiple objectives, (3) end-to-end simulation tools to enable optimisation of heterogeneous, accelerated architectures for the specific algorithmic requirements of the various SLAM algorithmic approaches, and (4) tools for delivering, where appropriate, accelerated, adaptive SLAM solutions in a managed, JIT-compiled, adaptive runtime context.

Traditional high-quality 3D graphics requires large volumes of fine-detailed scene data for rendering. This demand compromises computational efficiency and local storage resources. Specifically, it becomes more concerning for future wearable and port able virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) displays. Recent approaches to combat this problem include remote rendering/streaming and neural representations of 3D assets. These approaches have redefined the traditional local storage-rendering pipeline by distributed computing or compression of large data. However, these methods typically suffer from high latency or low quality for practical visualization of large immersive virtual scenes, notably with extra high resolution and refresh rate requirements for VR applications such as gaming and design. Tailored for the future portable, low-storage, and energy-efficient VR platforms, we present the first gaze-contingent 3D neural representation and view synthesis method. We incorporate the human psychophysics of visual- and stereo-acuity into an egocentric neural representation of 3D scenery. Furthermore, we jointly optimize the latency/performance and visual quality, while mutually bridging human perception and neural scene synthesis, to achieve perceptually high-quality immersive interaction. Both objective analysis and subjective study demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in significantly reducing local storage volume and synthesis latency (up to 99% reduction in both data size and computational time), while simultaneously presenting high-fidelity rendering, with perceptual quality identical to that of fully locally stored and rendered high-quality imagery.
The field of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) has seen massive growth in recent years. Numerous degree programs have started to redesign their curricula to meet the high market demand of such job positions. In this paper, we performed a content analysis of online job postings hosted on Indeed.com and provided a skill classification framework for AR/VR job positions. Furthermore, we present a ranking of the relevant skills for the job position. Overall, we noticed that technical skills like UI/UX design, software design, asset design and graphics rendering are highly desirable for AR/VR positions. Our findings regarding prominent skill categories could be beneficial for the human resource departments as well as enhancing existing course curricula to tailor to the high market demand.
Virtual try-on technology enables users to try various fashion items using augmented reality and provides a convenient online shopping experience. However, most previous works focus on the virtual try-on for clothes while neglecting that for shoes, w hich is also a promising task. To this concern, this work proposes a real-time augmented reality virtual shoe try-on system for smartphones, namely ARShoe. Specifically, ARShoe adopts a novel multi-branch network to realize pose estimation and segmentation simultaneously. A solution to generate realistic 3D shoe model occlusion during the try-on process is presented. To achieve a smooth and stable try-on effect, this work further develop a novel stabilization method. Moreover, for training and evaluation, we construct the very first large-scale foot benchmark with multiple virtual shoe try-on task-related labels annotated. Exhaustive experiments on our newly constructed benchmark demonstrate the satisfying performance of ARShoe. Practical tests on common smartphones validate the real-time performance and stabilization of the proposed approach.
Humans quickly solve tasks in novel systems with complex dynamics, without requiring much interaction. While deep reinforcement learning algorithms have achieved tremendous success in many complex tasks, these algorithms need a large number of sample s to learn meaningful policies. In this paper, we present a task for navigating a marble to the center of a circular maze. While this system is very intuitive and easy for humans to solve, it can be very difficult and inefficient for standard reinforcement learning algorithms to learn meaningful policies. We present a model that learns to move a marble in the complex environment within minutes of interacting with the real system. Learning consists of initializing a physics engine with parameters estimated using data from the real system. The error in the physics engine is then corrected using Gaussian process regression, which is used to model the residual between real observations and physics engine simulations. The physics engine augmented with the residual model is then used to control the marble in the maze environment using a model-predictive feedback over a receding horizon. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a hybrid model consisting of a full physics engine along with a statistical function approximator has been used to control a complex physical system in real-time using nonlinear model-predictive control (NMPC).
Data-driven algorithms have surpassed traditional techniques in almost every aspect in robotic vision problems. Such algorithms need vast amounts of quality data to be able to work properly after their training process. Gathering and annotating that sheer amount of data in the real world is a time-consuming and error-prone task. Those problems limit scale and quality. Synthetic data generation has become increasingly popular since it is faster to generate and automatic to annotate. However, most of the current datasets and environments lack realism, interactions, and details from the real world. UnrealROX is an environment built over Unreal Engine 4 which aims to reduce that reality gap by leveraging hyperrealistic indoor scenes that are explored by robot agents which also interact with objects in a visually realistic manner in that simulated world. Photorealistic scenes and robots are rendered by Unreal Engine into a virtual reality headset which captures gaze so that a human operator can move the robot and use controllers for the robotic hands; scene information is dumped on a per-frame basis so that it can be reproduced offline to generate raw data and ground truth annotations. This virtual reality environment enables robotic vision researchers to generate realistic and visually plausible data with full ground truth for a wide variety of problems such as class and instance semantic segmentation, object detection, depth estimation, visual grasping, and navigation.
