We propose a review of the current knowledge about the synthesis, magnetic properties and applications of magnetic cylindrical nanowires and nanotubes. By nano we consider diameters reasonably smaller than a micrometer. At this scale, comparable to micromagnetic and transport length scales, novel properties appear. At the same time, this makes the underlying physics easier to understand due to the limiter number of degrees of freedom involved. The three-dimensional nature and the curvature of these objects contribute also to their specific properties, compared to patterns flat elements. While the topic of nanowires and later nanotubes started now decades ago, it is nevertheless flourishing, thanks to the progress of synthesis, theory and characterization tools. These give access to ever more complex and thus functional structures, and also shifting the focus from material-type measurements of large assemblies, to single-object investigations. We first provide an overview of common fabrication methods yielding nanowires, nanotubes and structures engineered in geometry~(change in diameter, shape) or material (segments, core-shell structures), shape or core-shell. We then review their magnetic properties: global measurements, magnetization states and switching, single domain wall statics and dynamics, and spin waves. For each aspect, both theory and experiments are surveyed. We also mention standard characterization techniques useful for these. We finally mention emerging applications of magnetic nanowires and nanotubes, along with the foreseen perspectives in the topic.

We show that the axial component of the magnetic permeability tensor is resonant for a wire medium consisting of high-index epsilon-positive nanowires, and its real part changes the sign at a certain frequency. At this frequency the medium experience s the topological transition from the hyperbolic to the elliptic type of dispersion. We show that the transition regime is characterized by extremely strong dependence of the permeability on the wave vector. This implies very high density of electromagnetic states that results in the filamentary pattern and noticeable Purcell factor for a transversely oriented magnetic dipole.
Magnetic helix wire is one of the most simple magnetic systems which manifest properties of both curvature and torsion. There exist two equilibrium states in the helix wire with easy-tangential anisotropy: a quasi-tangential magnetization distributio n in case of relatively small curvatures and torsions, and an onion state in opposite case. In the last case the magnetization is close to tangential one, deviations are caused by the torsion and curvature. Possible equilibrium magnetization states in the helix magnet with different anisotropy directions are studied theoretically. The torsion also essentially influences the spin-wave dynamics, acting as an effective magnetic field. Originated from the curvature induced effective Dzyaloshinskii interaction, this magnetic field leads to the coupling between the helix chirality and the magnetochirality, it breaks mirror symmetry in spin-wave spectrum. All analytical predictions on magnetization statics an dynamics are well confirmed by the direct spin lattice simulations.
We study the electronic states of core multi-shell semiconductor nanowires, including the effect of strong magnetic fields. We show that the multi-shell overgrowth of a free-standing nanowire, together with the prismatic symmetry of the substrate, ma y induce quantum confinement of carriers in a set of quasi-1D quantum channels corresponding to the nanowire edges. Localization and inter-channel tunnel coupling are controlled by the curvature at the edges and the diameter of the underlying nanowire. We also show that a magnetic field may induce either Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the energy levels in the axial configuration, or a dimensional transition of the quantum states from quasi-1D to Landau levels for fields normal to the axis. Explicit predictions are given for nanostructures based on GaAs, InAs, and InGaN with different symmetries.

We study the formation and control of metastable states of pairs of domain walls in cylindrical nanowires of small diameter where the transverse walls are the lower energy state. We show that these pairs form bound states under certain conditions, wi th a lifetime as long as 200ns, and are stabilized by the influence of a spin polarized current. Their stability is analyzed with a model based on the magnetostatic interaction and by 3D micromagnetic simulations. The apparition of bound states could hinder the operation of devices.
Through magnetic linear dichroism spectroscopy, the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes has been extracted and found to be 2-4 times greater than values for semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. This large anisotropy is consistent with our calculations and can be understood in terms of large orbital paramagnetism of electrons in metallic nanotubes arising from the Aharonov-Bohm-phase-induced gap opening in a parallel field. We also compare our values with previous work for semiconducting nanotubes, which confirm a break from the prediction that the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy increases linearly with the diameter.
