The Wigner function of a dynamical infinite dimensional lattice is studied. A closed differential equation without diffusion terms for this function is obtained and solved. We map atom-photon interaction systems, such as the Jaynes-Cummings model, into this lattice model, where each dressed or polariton state corresponds to a point in the lattice and the conjugate momenta are described by the eigenvalues of the phase operator. The corresponding Wigner function is defined by these two conjugate variables in what we name the polariton phase space. We derive a general propagator of the Wigner function, which is also valid for other hybrid models.

The Fermi g_F(x,p) function provides a phase space description of quantum mechanics conceptually different from that based on the the Wigner function W(x,p). In this paper, we show that for a peaked wave packet the g_F(x,p)=0 curve approximately corr esponds to a phase space contour level of the Wigner function and provides a satisfactory description of the wave packets size and shape. Our results show that the Fermi function is an interesting tool to investigate quantum fluctuations in the semiclassical regime.
We provide an introduction into the formulation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics using the Wigner phase-space distribution function and apply this concept to two physical situations at the interface of quantum theory and general relativity: (i) the motion of an ensemble of cold atoms relevant to tests of the weak equivalence principle, and (ii) the Kasevich-Chu interferometer. In order to lay the foundations for this analysis we first present a representation-free description of the Kasevich-Chu interferometer based on unitary operators.
Quantum engineering now allows to design and construct multi-qubit states in a range of physical systems. These states are typically quite complex in nature, with disparate, but relevant properties that include both single and multi-qubit coherences and even entanglement. All these properties can be assessed by reconstructing the density matrix of those states - but the large parameter space can mean physical insight of the nature of those states and their coherence can be hard to achieve. Here we explore how the Wigner function of a multipartite system and its visualization provides rich information on the nature of the state, not only at illustrative level but also at the quantitative level. We test our tools in a photonic architecture making use of the multiple degrees of freedom of two photons.
We introduce a family of criteria to detect quantum non-Gaussian states of a harmonic oscillator, that is, quantum states that can not be expressed as a convex mixture of Gaussian states. In particular we prove that, for convex mixtures of Gaussian s tates, the value of the Wigner function at the origin of phase space is bounded from below by a non-zero positive quantity, which is a function only of the average number of excitations (photons) of the state. As a consequence, if this bound is violated then the quantum state must be quantum non-Gaussian. We show that this criterion can be further generalized by considering additional Gaussian operations on the state under examination. We then apply these criteria to various non-Gaussian states evolving in a noisy Gaussian channel, proving that the bounds are violated for high values of losses, and thus also for states characterized by a positive Wigner function.
