Data analytics and data science play a significant role in nowadays society. In the context of Smart Grids (SG), the collection of vast amounts of data has seen the emergence of a plethora of data analysis approaches. In this paper, we conduct a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) aimed at getting insights about different facets of SG data analysis: application sub-domains (e.g., power load control), aspects covered (e.g., forecasting), used techniques (e.g., clustering), tool-support, research methods (e.g., experiments/simulations), replicability/reproducibility of research. The final goal is to provide a view of the current status of research. Overall, we found that each sub-domain has its peculiarities in terms of techniques, approaches and research methodologies applied. Simulations and experiments play a crucial role in many areas. The replicability of studies is limited concerning the provided implemented algorithms, and to a lower extent due to the usage of private datasets.

The integration of renewable sources, communication and power networks with information and communication technologies is one of the main challenges in Smart Grids (SG) large-scale testing. For this reason, the coupling of simulators is commonly used to dynamically simulate several aspects of the SG infrastructure, in the so-called co-simulations. In this paper, we provide a scoping review of research of co-simulations in the context of Smart Grids: i) research areas and research problems addressed by co-simulations, ii) specific co-simulation aspects focus of research, iii) typical coupling of simulators in co-simulation studies. Based on the results, we discuss research directions of future SG co-simulation research in each of the identified areas.
The conventional approach to pre-process data for compression is to apply transforms such as the Fourier, the Karhunen-Lo`{e}ve, or wavelet transforms. One drawback from adopting such an approach is that it is independent of the use of the compressed data, which may induce significant optimality losses when measured in terms of final utility (instead of being measured in terms of distortion). We therefore revisit this paradigm by tayloring the data pre-processing operation to the utility function of the decision-making entity using the compressed (and therefore noisy) data. More specifically, the utility function consists of an Lp-norm, which is very relevant in the area of smart grids. Both a linear and a non-linear use-oriented transforms are designed and compared with conventional data pre-processing techniques, showing that the impact of compression noise can be significantly reduced.
Due to limited metering infrastructure, distribution grids are currently challenged by observability issues. On the other hand, smart meter data, including local voltage magnitudes and power injections, are communicated to the utility operator from g rid buses with renewable generation and demand-response programs. This work employs grid data from metered buses towards inferring the underlying grid state. To this end, a coupled formulation of the power flow problem (CPF) is put forth. Exploiting the high variability of injections at metered buses, the controllability of solar inverters, and the relative time-invariance of conventional loads, the idea is to solve the non-linear power flow equations jointly over consecutive time instants. An intuitive and easily verifiable rule pertaining to the locations of metered and non-metered buses on the physical grid is shown to be a necessary and sufficient criterion for local observability in radial networks. To account for noisy smart meter readings, a coupled power system state estimation (CPSSE) problem is further developed. Both CPF and CPSSE tasks are tackled via augmented semi-definite program relaxations. The observability criterion along with the CPF and CPSSE solvers are numerically corroborated using synthetic and actual solar generation and load data on the IEEE 34-bus benchmark feeder.
One source of software project challenges and failures is the systematic errors introduced by human cognitive biases. Although extensively explored in cognitive psychology, investigations concerning cognitive biases have only recently gained populari ty in software engineering (SE) research. This paper therefore systematically maps, aggregates and synthesizes the literature on cognitive biases in software engineering to generate a comprehensive body of knowledge, understand state of the art research and provide guidelines for future research and practise. Focusing on bias antecedents, effects and mitigation techniques, we identified 65 articles, which investigate 37 cognitive biases, published between 1990 and 2016. Despite strong and increasing interest, the results reveal a scarcity of research on mitigation techniques and poor theoretical foundations in understanding and interpreting cognitive biases. Although bias-related research has generated many new insights in the software engineering community, specific bias mitigation techniques are still needed for software professionals to overcome the deleterious effects of cognitive biases on their work.
The utilisation of blockchain has moved beyond digital currency to other fields such as health, the Internet of Things, and education. In this paper, we present a systematic mapping study to collect and analyse relevant research on blockchain technol ogy related to the higher education field. The paper concentrates on two main themes. First, it examines state of the art in blockchain-based applications that have been developed for educational purposes. Second, it summarises the challenges and research gaps that need to be addressed in future studies.
