Bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) are thought to result from binary star interactions and, indeed, tens of binary central stars of PNe have been found, in particular using photometric time-series that allow detecting post-common envelope systems. Using photometry at the NTT in La Silla we have studied the bright object close to the centre of PN M3-2 and found it to be an eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 1.88 days. However, the components of the binary appear to be two A or F stars, of almost equal masses, and are thus too cold to be the source of ionisation of the nebula. Using deep images of the central star obtained in good seeing, we confirm a previous result that the central star is more likely a much fainter star, located 2 arcseconds away from the bright star. The eclipsing binary is thus a chance alignment on top of the planetary nebula. We also studied the nebular abundance and confirm it to be a Type I PN.

We observe the abrupt end of solar activity cycles at the Suns equator by combining almost 140 years of observations from ground and space. These terminator events appear to be very closely related to the onset of magnetic activity belonging to the n ext sunspot cycle at mid-latitudes and the polar-reversal process at high-latitudes. Using multi-scale tracers of solar activity we examine the timing of these events in relation to the excitation of new activity and find that the time taken for the solar plasma to communicate this transition is of the order of one solar rotation, but could be shorter. Utilizing uniquely comprehensive solar observations from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) we see that this transitional event is strongly longitudinal in nature. Combined, these characteristics imply that magnetic information is communicated through the solar interior rapidly. A range of possibilities exist to explain such behavior: the presence of magnetic reconnection in the deep interior, internal gravity waves on the solar tachocline, or that the magnetic fields present in the Suns convection zone could be very large, with a poloidal field strengths reaching 50k - considerably larger than conventional explorations of solar and stellar dynamos estimate. Regardless of mechanism responsible, the rapid timescales demonstrated by the Suns global magnetic field reconfiguration present strong constraints on first-principles numerical simulations of the solar interior and, by extension, other stars.

While artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been widely adopted in machine learning, researchers are increasingly obsessed by the gaps between ANNs and biological neural networks (BNNs). In this paper, we propose a framework named as Evolutionary Pl astic Recurrent Neural Networks} (EPRNN). Inspired by BNN, EPRNN composes Evolution Strategies, Plasticity Rules, and Recursion-based Learning all in one meta learning framework for generalization to different tasks. More specifically, EPRNN incorporates with nested loops for meta learning -- an outer loop searches for optimal initial parameters of the neural network and learning rules; an inner loop adapts to specific tasks. In the inner loop of EPRNN, we effectively attain both long term memory and short term memory by forging plasticity with recursion-based learning mechanisms, both of which are believed to be responsible for memristance in BNNs. The inner-loop setting closely simulate that of BNNs, which neither query from any gradient oracle for optimization nor require the exact forms of learning objectives. To evaluate the performance of EPRNN, we carry out extensive experiments in two groups of tasks: Sequence Predicting, and Wheeled Robot Navigating. The experiment results demonstrate the unique advantage of EPRNN compared to state-of-the-arts based on plasticity and recursion while yielding comparably good performance against deep learning based approaches in the tasks. The experiment results suggest the potential of EPRNN to generalize to variety of tasks and encourage more efforts in plasticity and recursion based learning mechanisms.
In this article, we prove a Legendrian Whitney trick which allows for the removal of intersections between codimension-two contact submanifolds and Legendrian submanifolds, assuming such a smooth cancellation is possible. This technique is applied to show the existence h-principle for codimension-two contact embeddings with a prescribed contact structure.

In this paper we prove a convexity and fibre-connectedness theorem for proper maps constructed by Thimms trick on a connected Hamiltonian $G$-space $M$ that generate a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense submanifold. Since these maps only gener ate a Hamiltonian torus action on an open dense submanifold of $M$, convexity and fibre-connectedness do not follow immediately from Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternbergs convexity theorem, even if $M$ is compact. The core contribution of this paper is to provide a simple argument circumventing this difficulty. In the case where the map is constructed from a chain of subalgebras we prove that the image is given by a list of inequalities that can be computed explicitly. This generalizes the famous example of Gelfand-Zeitlin systems on coadjoint orbits introduced by Guillemin and Sternberg. Moreover, we prove that if such a map generates a completely integrable torus action on an open dense submanifold of $M$, then all its fibres are smooth embedded submanifolds.

Recently, white dwarf stars have found a new use in the fundamental physics community. Many prospective theories of the fundamental interactions of Nature allow traditional constants, like the fine structure constant $alpha$, to vary in some way. A s tudy by Berengut et al. (2013) used the Fe/Ni V line measurements made by Preval et al. (2013) from the hot DA white dwarf G191-B2B, in an attempt to detect any variation in $alpha$. It was found that the Fe V lines indicated an increasing alpha, whereas the Ni V lines indicated a decreasing alpha. Possible explanations for this could be misidentification of the lines, inaccurate atomic data, or wavelength dependent distortion in the spectrum. We examine the first two cases by using a high S/N reference spectrum from the hot sdO BD+28$^{circ}$4211 to calibrate the Fe/Ni V atomic data. With this new data, we re-evaluate the work of Berengut et al. (2013) to derive a new constraint on the variation of alpha in a gravitational field.
