Spin liquid ground states are predicted to arise within several distinct scenarios in condensed matter physics. The observation of these disordered magnetic states is particularly pervasive amongst a class of materials known as frustrated magnets, in which the competition between various magnetic exchange interactions prevents the system from adopting long-range magnetic order at low temperatures. Spin liquids continue to be of great interest due to their exotic nature and the possibility that they may support fractionalised excitations, such as Majorana fermions. Systems that allow for such phenomena are not only fascinating from a fundamental perspective but may also be practically significant in future technologies based on quantum computation. Here we show that the underlying antiferromagnetic sublattice in TbInO$_3$ undergoes a crystal field induced triangular-to-honeycomb dilution at low temperatures. The absence of a conventional magnetic ordering transition at the lowest measurable temperatures indicates that another critical mechanism must govern in the ground state selection of TbInO$_3$. We propose that anisotropic exchange interactions, mediated through strong spin-orbit coupling on the emergent honeycomb lattice of TbInO$_3$, give rise to a highly frustrated spin liquid.

We study the ground state properties, the electronic excitations and lattice dynamics in spin-liquid candidate TbInO$_3$. By employing polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy we define the inter- and intra-multiplet excitations, and establish the lo w-energy crystal-field (CF) level scheme. In particular, we demonstrate that the ground state of the Tb$^{3+}$ ions is a non-Kramers doublet, and relate the enhanced linewidth of the CF modes to the magnetic fluctuations near the spin-liquid ground state. We identify all 38 allowed Raman-active phonon modes at low temperature. Moreover, we observe hybrid vibronic excitations involving coupled CF and low-lying phonon modes, suggesting strong spin-lattice dynamics. We develop a model for vibronic states and obtain the parameters of the bare responses and coupling strength. We further demonstrate that the obtained CF level scheme is consistent with specific heat data.
Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the success ful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Theta$$_w$ $sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($leq$ $|$$Theta$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 %). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.
The crystal structure and magnetic property of the single crystalline hexagonal rare-earth indium oxides GdInO$_3$ have been studied by combing experiments and model calculations. The two inequivalent Gd$^{3+}$ ions form the centered honeycomb lattic e, which consists of honeycomb and triangular sublattices. The dc magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements suggest two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at $T_textrm{N1}$ = 2.3 K and $T_textrm{N2}$ = 1.02 K. An inflection point is observed in the isothermal magnetization curve, which implies an up-up-down phase with a 1/3 magnetization plateau. We also observe a large magnetic entropy change originated from the magnetic frustration in GdInO$_3$. By considering a classical spin Hamiltonian, we establish the ground state phase diagram, which suggests that GdInO$_3$ has a weak easy-axis anisotropy and is close to the equilateral triangular-lattice system. The theoretical ground-state phase diagram may be used as a reference in NMR, ESR, or $mu$SR experiments in future.
Non-collinear two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnets (2D TLAF) are currently an area of very active research due to their unique magnetic properties, which lead to non-trivial quantum effects that experimentally manifest themselves in th e spin excitation spectra. Recent examples of such insulating 2D TLAF include (Y,Lu)MnO$_3$, LiCrO$_2$, and CuCrO$_2$. Hexagonal LuFeO3 is a recently synthesized 2D TLAF which exhibits properties of an ideal multiferroic material, partially because of the high spin ($S=5/2$) and strong magnetic super-exchange interactions. We report the full range of spin dynamics in a bulk single crystal of (Lu$_{0.6}$Sc$_{0.4}$)FeO$_3$ (Sc doping to stabilize the hexagonal structure) measured via time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. Modeling with linear spin wave theory yields a nearest neighbor exchange coupling of $J$ = 4.0(2) meV (DFT calculations for $h$-LuFeO$_3$ predicted a value of 6.31 meV) and anisotropy values of $K_D$ = 0.17(1) meV (easy plane) and $K_A$~=~-0.05(1)~meV (local easy axis). It is observed that the magnon bandwidth of the spin wave spectra is twice as large for $h$-(Lu,Sc)FeO$_3$ as it is for $h$-LuMnO$_3$.
Ba3IrTi2O9 crystallizes in a hexagonal structure consisting of a layered triangular arrangement of Ir4+ (Jeff=1/2). Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show no magnetic ordering down to 0.35K inspite of a strong magnetic coupling as eviden ced by a large Curie-Weiss temperature=-130K. The magnetic heat capacity follows a power law at low temperature. Our measurements suggest that Ba3IrTi2O9 is a 5d, Ir-based (Jeff=1/2), quantum spin liquid on a 2D triangular lattice.
