One of the most fascinating topics in current quantum physics are hybridised systems, in which different quantum resonators are strongly coupled. Prominent examples are circular resonators with high quality factors that allow the coupling of optical whispering gallery modes to microwave cavities or magnon resonances in optomagnonics. Whispering gallery modes play a special role in this endeavour because of their high quality factor and strong localisation, which ultimately increases the overlap of the wavefunctions of quantum particles in hybridised systems. The hybridisation with magnons, the collective quantum excitations of the electron spins in a magnetically ordered material, is of particular interest because magnons can take over two functionalities: due to their collective nature they are robust and can serve as a quantum memory and, moreover, they can act as a wavelength converter between microwave and THz photons. However, the observation of whispering gallery magnons has not yet been achieved due to the lack of efficient excitation schemes for magnons with large wave vectors in a circular geometry. To tackle this problem, we studied nonlinear 3-magnon scattering as a means to generate whispering gallery magnons. This Letter discusses the basics of this nonlinear mechanism in a confined, circular geometry from experimental and theoretical point of view.

A relativistic laser pulse, confined in a cylindrical target, performs multiple scattering along the target surface. The confinement property of the target results in a very effcient interaction. This proccess, which is just yet another example of th e whispering gallery effect, may pronounce itself in plenty of physical phenomena, including surface grazing electron acceleration and generation of relativistic magnetized plasma structures.
We introduce a microwave circuit architecture for quantum signal processing combining design principles borrowed from high-Q 3D resonators in the quantum regime and from planar structures fabricated with standard lithography. The resulting 2.5D whisp ering-gallery mode resonators store 98% of their energy in vacuum. We have measured internal quality factors above 3 million at the single photon level and have used the device as a materials characterization platform to place an upper bound on the surface resistance of thin film aluminum of less than 250nOhms.
Quasiclassical approach and geometric optics allow to describe rather accurately whispering gallery modes in convex axisymmetric bodies. Using this approach we obtain practical formulas for the calculation of eigenfrequencies and radiative Q-factors in dielectrical spheroid and compare them with the known solutions for the particular cases and with numerical calculations. We show how geometrical interpretation allows expansion of the method on arbitrary shaped axisymmetric bodies.

The boundary element method is applied to investigate the optical forces when whispering gallery modes (WGMs) are excited by a total internally reflected wave. Such evanescent wave is particularly effective in exciting the high-$Q$ WGM, while the low angular or high radial order modes are suppressed relatively. This results in a large contrast between the forces on and off resonance, and thus allows for high size-selectivity. We fully incorporate the prism-particle interaction and found that the optical force behaves differently at different separations. Optimal separation is found which corresponds to a compromise between intensity and $Q$ factor.
We demonstrate that yttrium iron garnet microspheres support optical whispering gallery modes similar to those in non-magnetic dielectric materials. The direction of the ferromagnetic moment tunes both the resonant frequency via the Voigt effect as w ell as the degree of polarization rotation via the Faraday effect. An understanding of the magneto-optical coupling in whispering gallery modes, where the propagation direction rotates with respect to the magnetization, is fundamental to the emerging field of cavity optomagnonics.
