Molecular pillar approach to grow vertical covalent organic framework nanosheets on graphene: new hybrid materials for energy storage

Hybrid 2D-2D materials composed by perpendicularly oriented covalent organic framework (COFs) and graphene were prepared and tested for energy storage applications. Diboronic acid molecules covalently attached to graphene oxide (GO) were used as nucleation sites for directing vertical growth of COF-1 nanosheets (v-COF-GO). The hybrid material shows forest of COF-1 nanosheets with thickness of ~3 to 15 nm in edge-on orientation relative to GO. The same reaction performed in absence of molecular pillars resulted in uncontrollable growth of thick COF-1 platelets parallel to the surface of GO. The v-COF-GO was converted into conductive carbon material preserving the nanostructure of precursor with ultrathin porous carbon nanosheets grafted to graphene in edge-on orientation. It was demonstrated as high-performance electrode material for supercapacitors. The molecular pillar approach can be used for preparation of many other 2D-2D materials with control of their relative orientation.

Porous polymeric covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been under intense synthetic investigation with over 100 unique structural motifs known. In order to realize the true potential of these materials, converting the powders into thin films with s trict control of thickness and morphology is necessary and accomplished through techniques including interfacial synthesis, chemical exfoliation and mechanical delamination. Recent progress in the construction and tailored properties of thin film COFs are highlighted in this review, addressing mechanical properties as well as application-focused properties in filtration, electronics, sensors, electrochemical, magnetics, optoelectronics and beyond. Additionally, heterogeneous integration of these thin films with other inorganic and organic materials is discussed, revealing exciting opportunities to integrate COF thin films with other state of the art material and device systems.
The reduction of graphene oxide is one of the most facile methods to fabricate a large amount of graphene and the reduction rate of graphene oxide is related with the quality of synthesized graphene for its possible application. The reduction rate is usually determined by using various spectroscopy measurements such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Here we propose that the magnetic data can be used as a means of determining the quality of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by the investigation of close relation between magnetic moment and chemical bonding state. Our experimental findings and previous theoretical studies suggest that hydroxyl functional groups in GO mainly contribute to Langevin paramagnetism, carboxyl functional groups in RGO1 act as the source for Pauli paramagnetism, and sp2 bonding state in RGO2 plays a major role on the diamagnetism. Especially in terms of mass production, the magnetic data is useful for decomposing the chemical bonding electronic states in graphene-like samples and judging their quality.
Magnesium hydride owns the largest share of publications on solid materials for hydrogen storage. The Magnesium group of international experts contributing to IEA Task 32 Hydrogen Based Energy Storage recently published two review papers presenting t he activities of the group focused on magnesium hydride based materials and on Mg based compounds for hydrogen and energy storage. This review article not only overviews the latest activities on both fundamental aspects of Mg-based hydrides and their applications, but also presents a historic overview on the topic and outlines projected future developments. Particular attention is paid to the theoretical and experimental studies of Mg-H system at extreme pressures, kinetics and thermodynamics of the systems based on MgH2,nanostructuring, new Mg-based compounds and novel composites, and catalysis in the Mg based H storage systems. Finally, thermal energy storage and upscaled H storage systems accommodating MgH2 are presented.

Understanding temperature-dependent hardness of covalent materials is not only of fundamental scientific interest, but also of crucial importance for technical applications. In this work, a temperature-dependent hardness formula for diamond-structure d covalent materials is constructed on the basis of the dislocation theory. Our results show that, at low temperature, the Vickers hardness is mainly controlled by Poissons ratio and shear modulus with the latter playing a dominant role. With increasing temperature, the plastic deformation mechanism undergoes a transition from shuffle-set dislocation control to glide-set dislocation control, leading to a steeper drop of hardness at high temperature. In addition, an intrinsic parameter, a3G, is revealed for diamond-structured covalent materials, which measures the resistance to soften at high temperature. Our hardness model shows remarkable agreement with experimental data. Current work not only sheds lights on the physical origin of hardness, but also provides a direct principle for superhard materials design.

Combining first-principles density functional theory simulations with IR and Raman experiments, we determine the frequency shift of vibrational modes of CO2 when physiadsorbed in the iso-structural metal organic framework materials Mg-MOF74 and Zn-MO F74. Surprisingly, we find that the resulting change in shift is rather different for these two systems and we elucidate possible reasons. We explicitly consider three factors responsible for the frequency shift through physiabsorption, namely (i) the change in the molecule length, (ii) the asymmetric distortion of the CO$_2$ molecule, and (iii) the direct influence of the metal center. The influence of each factor is evaluated separately through different geometry considerations, providing a fundamental understanding of the frequency shifts observed experimentally.
