Nanocomposites enable us to tune parameters that are crucial for use of such materials for neutron-optics applications such as diffraction gratings by careful choice of properties such as species (isotope) and concentration of contained nanoparticles. Nanocomposites for neutron optics have so far successfully been deployed in protonated form, containing high amounts of $^1$H atoms, which exhibit rather strong neutron absorption and incoherent scattering. At a future stage of development, chemicals containing $^1$H could be replaced by components with more favourable isotopes, such as $^2$H or $^{19}$F. In this note, we present results of Monte-Carlo simulations of the transmissivity of various nanocomposite materials for thermal and very-cold neutron spectra. The results are compared to experimental transmission data. Our simulation results for deuterated and fluorinated nanocomposite materials predict a decrease of absorption- and scattering-losses down to about 2 % for very-cold neutrons.

The ultracold neutron (UCN) source at the Paul Scherrer Institute serves mainly experiments in fundamental physics. High UCN intensities are the key for progress and success in such experiments. A detailed understanding of all source parameters is re quired for future improvements. Here we present the UCN source components, elements of the neutron optics, the characterization of important related parameters like emptying times, storage times or transmission probabilities of UCN which are ultimately defining the UCN intensity delivered at the beamports. We also introduce a detailed simulation model of the PSI UCN source, used to analyze the measurements and to extract surface parameters.

This paper describes the Plateau de Bure Neutron Monitor (PdBNM), an instrument providing continuous ground-level measurements of atmospheric secondary neutron flux resulting from the interaction of primary cosmic rays with the Earths atmosphere. The detector is installed on the Plateau de Bure (Devoluy mountains, south of France, latitude North 44{deg} 38 02, longitude East 5{deg} 54 26, altitude 2555 m) as a part of the ASTEP Platform (Altitude Single-event effects Test European Platform), a permanent installation dedicated to the study of the impact of terrestrial natural radiation on microelectronics circuit reliability. The present paper reports the neutron monitor design, its operation since August 2008 and its complete numerical simulation using the Monte Carlo codes GEANT4 and MCNPX. We particularly detail the computation of the neutron monitor detection response function for neutrons, muons, protons and pions, the comparison between GEANT4 and MCNPX numerical results and the evaluation of the PdBNM counting rate a function of both the nature and flux of the incident atmospheric particles.
Neutron transport along guides is governed by the Liouville theorem and the technology involved has advanced in recent decades. Computer simulations have proven to be useful tools in the design and conception of neutron guide systems in facilities. I n this study, we use a Monte Carlo method to perform simulations for an S-shaped neutron guide with different dimensions for a Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) instrument, through the MCSTAS software. A wavelength cutoff is observed and shown to be dependent on the geometrical parameters of the guide. Results for the neutron flux at sample position are presented and a greater sensitivity of cutoffs concerning the curvatures of the guides than to their lengths is noticed. Our results are in agreement with those obtained from the Acceptance Diagram method and we analyze the beam divergence behavior along the S-shaped guide.
The newest neutron scattering applications are highly intensity-limited techniques that demand reducing the neutron losses between source and detectors. In addition, the nuclear industry demands more accurate data and procedures for the design and op timization of advanced fission reactors, especially for the treatment of fuel and moderator materials. To meet these demands, it is necessary to improve the existing calculation tools, through the generation of better models that describe the interaction of neutrons with the systems of interest. The Neutron Physics Department at Centro Atomico Bariloche (CNEA, Argentina) has been developing over the time new models for the interaction of slow neutrons with materials, to produce scattering kernels and cross section data in the thermal and cold neutron energy region. Besides the studies carried out on neutron moderators, we have recently begun looking at materials that could serve as efficient neutron reflectors over those energy ranges. In this work we present the results of transmission and scattering experiments on diamond nanopowder and magnesium hydride, carried out simultaneously at the VESUVIO spectrometer (ISIS, UK), and compare them with newly generated cross-section libraries.

There are worldwide efforts to search for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Precision experiments using ultracold neutrons (UCN) require very high intensities of UCN. Efficient transport of UCN from the production volume to the e xperiment is therefore of great importance. We have developed a method using prestored UCN in order to quantify UCN transmission in tubular guides. This method simulates the final installation at the Paul Scherrer Institutes UCN source where neutrons are stored in an intermediate storage vessel serving three experimental ports. This method allowed us to qualify UCN guides for their intended use and compare their properties.
