The problem of estimating multiple loss parameters of an optical system using the most general ancilla-assisted parallel strategy is solved under energy constraints. An upper bound on the quantum Fisher information matrix is derived assuming that the environment modes involved in the loss interaction can be accessed. Any pure-state probe that is number-diagonal in the modes interacting with the loss elements is shown to exactly achieve this upper bound even if the environment modes are inaccessible, as is usually the case in practice. We explain this surprising phenomenon, and show that measuring the Schmidt bases of the probe is a parameter-independent optimal measurement. Our results imply that multiple copies of two-mode squeezed vacuum probes with an arbitrarily small nonzero degree of squeezing, or probes prepared using single-photon states and linear optics can achieve quantum-optimal performance in conjunction with on-off detection. We also calculate explicitly the energy-constrained Bures distance between any two product loss channels. Our results are relevant to standoff image sensing, biological imaging, absorption spectroscopy, and photodetector calibration.

One of the fundamental tasks in quantum metrology is to estimate multiple parameters embedded in a noisy process, i.e., a quantum channel. In this paper, we study fundamental limits to quantum channel estimation via the concept of amortization and th e right logarithmic derivative (RLD) Fisher information value. Our key technical result is the proof of a chain-rule inequality for the RLD Fisher information value, which implies that amortization, i.e., access to a catalyst state family, does not increase the RLD Fisher information value of quantum channels. This technical result leads to a fundamental and efficiently computable limitation for multiparameter channel estimation in the sequential setting, in terms of the RLD Fisher information value. As a consequence, we conclude that if the RLD Fisher information value is finite, then Heisenberg scaling is unattainable in the multiparameter setting.
The energy-time uncertainty relation puts a fundamental limit on the precision of radars and lidars for the estimation of range and velocity. The precision in the estimation of the range (through the time of arrival) and the velocity (through Doppler frequency shifts) of a target are inversely related to each other, and dictated by the bandwidth of the signal. Here we use the theoretical toolbox of multi-parameter quantum metrology to determine the ultimate precision of the simultaneous estimation of range and velocity. We consider the case of a single target as well as a pair of closely separated targets. In the latter case, we focus on the relative position and velocity. We show that the trade-off between the estimation precision of position and velocity is relaxed for entangled probe states, and is completely lifted in the limit of infinite entanglement. In the regime where the two targets are close to each other, the relative position and velocity can be estimated nearly optimally and jointly, even without entanglement, using the measurements determined by the symmetric logarithmic derivatives.
We consider discrete-alphabet encoding schemes for coherent-state quantum key distribution. The sender encodes the letters of a finite-size alphabet into coherent states whose amplitudes are symmetrically distributed on a circle centered in the origi n of the phase space. We study the asymptotic performance of this phase-encoded coherent-state protocol in direct and reverse reconciliation assuming both loss and thermal noise in the communication channel. In particular, we show that using just four phase-shifted coherent states is sufficient for generating secret key rates of the order of $4 times 10^{-3}$ bits per channel use at about 15 dB loss in the presence of realistic excess noise.
Quantum fingerprinting reduces communication complexity of determination whether two $n$-bit long inputs are equal or different in the simultaneous message passing model. Here we quantify the advantage of quantum fingerprinting over classical protoco ls when communication is carried out using optical signals with limited power and unrestricted bandwidth propagating over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with power spectral density (PSD) much less than one photon per unit time and unit bandwidth. We identify a noise parameter whose order of magnitude separates near-noiseless quantum fingerprinting, with signal duration effectively independent of $n$, from a regime where the impact of AWGN is significant. In the latter case the signal duration is found to scale as $O(sqrt{n})$, analogously to classical fingerprinting. However, the dependence of the signal duration on the AWGN PSD is starkly distinct, leading to quantum advantage in the form of a reduced multiplicative factor in $O(sqrt{n})$ scaling.
Simultaneous quantum estimation of multiple parameters has recently become essential in quantum metrology. Although the ultimate sensitivity of a multiparameter quantum estimation in noiseless environments can beat the standard quantum limit that eve ry classical sensor is bounded by, it is unclear whether the quantum sensor has an advantage over the classical one under realistic noise. In this work, we present a framework of the simultaneous estimation of multiple parameters with quantum sensors in a certain noisy environment. Our multiple parameters to be estimated are three components of an external magnetic field, and we consider the noise that causes only dephasing. We show that there is an optimal sensing time in the noisy environment and the sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit when the noisy environment is non-Markovian.
