Diagnostics of polarized emission provide us with valuable information on the Galactic magnetic field and the state of turbulence in the interstellar medium, which cannot be obtained from synchrotron intensity alone. In Paper I (Herron et al. 2017b), we derived polarization diagnostics that are rotationally and translationally invariant in the $Q$-$U$ plane, similar to the polarization gradient. In this paper, we apply these diagnostics to simulations of ideal magnetohydrodynamic turbulence that have a range of sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers. We generate synthetic images of Stokes $Q$ and $U$ for these simulations, for the cases where the turbulence is illuminated from behind by uniform polarized emission, and where the polarized emission originates from within the turbulent volume. From these simulated images we calculate the polarization diagnostics derived in Paper I, for different lines of sight relative to the mean magnetic field, and for a range of frequencies. For all of our simulations, we find that the polarization gradient is very similar to the generalized polarization gradient, and that both trace spatial variations in the magnetoionic medium for the case where emission originates within the turbulent volume, provided that the medium is not supersonic. We propose a method for distinguishing the cases of emission coming from behind or within a turbulent, Faraday rotating medium, and a method to partly map the rotation measure of the observed region. We also speculate on statistics of these diagnostics that may allow us to constrain the physical properties of an observed turbulent region.

This study aims to characterise the polarized foreground emission in the ELAIS-N1 field and to address its possible implications for the extraction of the cosmological 21-cm signal from the Low-Frequency Array - Epoch of Reionization (LOFAR-EoR) data . We use the high band antennas of LOFAR to image this region and RM-synthesis to unravel structures of polarized emission at high Galactic latitudes. The brightness temperature of the detected Galactic emission is on average 4 K in polarized intensity and covers the range from -10 to +13rad m^-2 in Faraday depth. The total polarized intensity and polarization angle show a wide range of morphological features. We have also used the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at 350 MHz to image the same region. The LOFAR and WSRT images show a similar complex morphology, at comparable brightness levels, but their spatial correlation is very low. The fractional polarization at 150 MHz, expressed as a percentage of the total intensity, amounts to 1.5%. There is no indication of diffuse emission in total intensity in the interferometric data, in line with results at higher frequencies. The wide frequency range, good angular resolution and good sensitivity make LOFAR an exquisite instrument for studying Galactic polarized emission at a resolution of 1-2 rad m^-2 in Faraday depth. The different polarised patterns observed at 150 MHz and 350 MHz are consistent with different source distributions along the line of sight wring in a variety of Faraday thin regions of emission. The presence of polarised foregrounds is a serious complication for Epoch of Reionization experiments. To avoid the leakage of polarized emission into total intensity, which can depend on frequency, we need to calibrate the instrumental polarization across the field of view to a small fraction of 1%.
We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations of stationary overpressured magnetized relativistic jets which are characterized by their dominant type of energy, namely internal, kinetic, or magnetic. Each model is threaded by a helic al magnetic field with a pitch angle of $45^circ$ and features a series of recollimation shocks produced by the initial pressure mismatch, whose strength and number varies as a function of the dominant type of energy. We perform a study of the polarization signatures from these models by integrating the radiative transfer equations for synchrotron radiation using as inputs the RMHD solutions. These simulations show a top-down emission asymmetry produced by the helical magnetic field and a progressive confinement of the emission into a jet spine as the magnetization increases and the internal energy of the non-thermal population is considered to be a constant fraction of the thermal one. Bright stationary components associated with the recollimation shocks appear presenting a relative intensity modulated by the Doppler boosting ratio between the pre-shock and post-shock states. Small viewing angles show a roughly bimodal distribution in the polarization angle due to the helical structure of the magnetic field, which is also responsible for the highly stratified degree of linear polarization across the jet width. In addition, small variations of the order of $26^circ$ are observed in the polarization angle of the stationary components, which can be used to identify recollimation shocks in astrophysical jets.

The interpretation of Galactic synchrotron observations is complicated by the degeneracy between the strength of the magnetic field perpendicular to the line of sight (LOS), $B_perp$, and the cosmic-ray electron (CRe) spectrum. Depending on the obser ving frequency, an energy-independent spectral energy slope $s$ for the CRe spectrum is usually assumed: $s=-2$ at frequencies below $simeq$400 MHz and $s=-3$ at higher frequencies. Motivated by the high angular and spectral resolution of current facilities such as the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) and future telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), we aim to understand the consequences of taking into account the energy-dependent CRe spectral energy slope on the analysis of the spatial variations of the brightness temperature spectral index, $beta$, and on the estimate of the average value of $B_perp$ along the LOS. We illustrate analytically and numerically the impact that different realisations of the CRe spectrum have on the interpretation of the spatial variation of $beta$. We find that the common assumption of an energy-independent $s$ is valid only in special cases. We show that for typical magnetic field strengths of the diffuse interstellar medium ($simeq$2$-$20 $mu$G), at frequencies of 0.1$-$10 GHz, the electrons that are mainly responsible for the synchrotron emission have energies in the range $simeq$100 MeV$-$50 GeV. This is the energy range where the spectral slope, $s$, of CRe has its greatest variation. We also show that the polarisation fraction can be much smaller than the maximum value of $simeq 70%$ because the orientation of ${bf B}_perp$ varies across the telescopes beam and along the LOS. Finally, we present a look-up plot that can be used to estimate the average value of $B_perp$ along the LOS from a set of values of $beta$ measured at centimetre to metre wavelengths, for a given CRe spectrum.
In this paper three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of AGN jets are presented to investigate the FR I/FR II dichotomy. Three simulations are presented which illustrates the difference in morphology for high/low Lorentz factor inject ion as well as a stratified background medium. Lorentz factors of 10 and 1.0014 were used for the high and low Lorentz factor cases respectively. The hydrodynamic simulations show a division in the morphology of jets based on their initial injection luminosity. An additional simulation was set up to investigate the evolution of the low Lorentz factor jet if the mass injection was lowered after a certain time. A synchrotron emission model was applied to these simulations to reproduce intensity maps at radio frequencies (1.5GHz) which were compared to the observed emission structures of FR I/FR II radio galaxies. The effect of Doppler boosting on the intensity maps was also investigated for different polar angles. The intensity maps of both the high and low Lorentz factor cases reproduced emission structures that resemble those of FR II type radio galaxies with a dominant cocoon region containing time dependent hot spots and filaments. An FR I like structure was, however, produced for the low Lorentz factor case if the mass injection rate was lowered after a set time period.
We have analyzed the available polarization surveys of the Galactic emission to estimate to what extent it may be a serious hindrance to forthcoming experiments aimed at detecting the polarized component of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotrop ies. Regions were identified for which independent data consistently indicate that depolarization must be small. The power spectrum of the polarized emission, in terms of antenna temperature, was found to be described by $C_{ell}simeq (1.2pm 0.8)cdot 10^{-9}cdot (ell / 450)^{-1.8pm 0.3}cdot ( u/ 2.4{rm GHz})^{-5.8}$ K$^{2}$, from arcminute to degree scales. Data on larger angular scales ($ellle 100$) indicate a steeper slope $sim ell^{-3}$. We conclude that polarized Galactic emission is unlikely to be a serious limitation to CMB polarization measurements at the highest frequencies of the MAP and {sc Planck}/LFI instruments, at least for $ellge 50$ and standard cosmological models. The weak correlation between polarization and total power and the low polarization degree of radio emission close to the Galactic plane, found also in low-depolarization regions, is interpreted as due to large contributions to the observed intensity from unpolarized sources, primarily strong HII regions, concentrated on the Galactic plane. Thus estimates of the power spectrum of total intensity at low Galactic latitudes are not representative of the spatial distribution of Galactic emission far from the plane. Both total power and polarized emissions show highly significant deviations from a Gaussian distribution.
