We use the technique of deconstruction to lift dualities from 2+1 to 3+1 dimensions. In this work we demonstrate the basic idea by deriving S-duality of maximally supersymmetric electromagnetism in 3+1 dimensions from mirror symmetry in 2+1. We also study the deconstruction of a non-supersymmetric duality in 3+1 dimensions using Abelian bosonization in 2+1 dimensions.

Contents: (1) Introduction, (2) General relativity and black holes, (3) Black holes and thermodynamics, (4) Strong interaction and gauge theories, (5) The road to AdS/CFT, (6) The AdS spacetime, (7) AdS/CFT - equilibrium, (8) AdS/CFT - adding probes, (9) Basics of nonequilibrium physics, (10) AdS/CFT - nonequilibrium, (11) Other AdS spacetimes, (12) Applications to quark-gluon plasma, (13) Basics of phase transition, (14) AdS/CFT - phase transition, (15) Exercises.
We use the exact-deconstruction prescription to lift various squashed-$S^3$ partition functions with supersymmetric-defect insertions to four-dimensional superconformal indices. Starting from three-dimensional circular-quiver theories with vortex-loo p-operator insertions, we recover the index of four-dimensional theories in the presence of codimension-two surface defects with (2,2) supersymmetry. The case of deconstruction with Wilson-loop insertions is discussed separately. We provide evidence that a certain prescription leads to the index of four-dimensional theories in the presence of surface defects with (4,0) supersymmetry. In addition, we deconstruct the index of four-dimensional gauge theories with codimension-one 1/2-BPS defects, starting from three-dimensional circular-quiver theories containing localised matter/gauge-field insertions at specific nodes. We also clarify certain calculational and conceptual points related to exact deconstruction.
We extend the holographic duality between 3d pure gravity and the 2d Ising CFT proposed in [Phys. Rev. D 85 (2012) 024032] to CFTs with boundaries. Besides the usual asymptotic boundary, the dual bulk spacetime now has a real cutoff, on which live br anes with finite tension, giving Neumann boundary condition on the metric tensor. The strongly coupled bulk theory requires that we dress the well-known semiclassical AdS/BCFT answer with boundary gravitons, turning the partition function into the form of Virasoro characters. Using this duality, we relate the brane tensions to the modular S-matrix elements of the dual BCFT and derive the transformation between gravitational solutions with different brane tensions under modular S action.
The double copy formalism provides an intriguing connection between gauge theories and gravity. It was first demonstrated in the perturbative context of scattering amplitudes but recently the formalism has been applied to exact classical solutions in gauge theories such as the monopole and instanton. In this paper we will investigate how duality symmetries in the gauge theory double copy to gravity and relate these to solution generating transformations and the action of $Sl(2,R)$ in general relativity.
Whenever available, refined BPS indices provide considerably more information on the spectrum of BPS states than their unrefined version. Extending earlier work on the modularity of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting D4-D2-D0 brane boun d states in type IIA strings on a Calabi-Yau threefold $mathfrak{Y}$, we construct the modular completion of generating functions of refined BPS indices supported on a divisor class. Although for compact $mathfrak{Y}$ the refined indices are not protected, switching on the refinement considerably simplifies the construction of the modular completion. Furthermore, it leads to a non-commutative analogue of the TBA equations, which suggests a quantization of the moduli space consistent with S-duality. In contrast, for a local CY threefold given by the total space of the canonical bundle over a complex surface $S$, refined BPS indices are well-defined, and equal to Vafa-Witten invariants of $S$. Our construction provides a modular completion of the generating function of these refined invariants for arbitrary rank. In cases where all reducible components of the divisor class are collinear (which occurs e.g. when $b_2(mathfrak{Y})=1$, or in the local case), we show that the holomorphic anomaly equation satisfied by the completed generating function truncates at quadratic order. In the local case, it agrees with an earlier proposal by Minahan et al for unrefined invariants, and extends it to the refined level using the afore-mentioned non-commutative structure. Finally, we show that these general predictions reproduce known results for $U(2)$ and $U(3)$ Vafa-Witten theory on $mathbb{P}^2$, and make them explicit for $U(4)$.
