Traditional forms of quantum uncertainty relations are invariably based on the standard deviation. This can be understood in the historical context of simultaneous development of quantum theory and mathematical statistics. Here, we present alternative forms of uncertainty relations, in both state dependent and state independent forms, based on the mean deviation. We illustrate the robustness of this formulation in situations where the standard deviation based uncertainty relation is inapplicable. We apply the mean deviation based uncertainty relation to detect EPR violation in a lossy scenario for a higher inefficiency threshold than that allowed by the standard deviation based approach. We demonstrate that the mean deviation based uncertainty relation can perform equally well as the standard deviation based uncertainty relation as non-linear witness for entanglement detection.

We present a new uncertainty relation by defining a measure of uncertainty based on skew information. For bipartite systems, we establish uncertainty relations with the existence of a quantum memory. A general relation between quantum correlations and tight bounds of uncertainty has been presented.
We consider the uncertainty bound on the sum of variances of two incompatible observables in order to derive a corresponding steering inequality. Our steering criterion when applied to discrete variables yields the optimum steering range for two qubi t Werner states in the two measurement and two outcome scenario. We further employ the derived steering relation for several classes of continuous variable systems. We show that non-Gaussian entangled states such as the photon subtracted squeezed vacuum state and the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator state furnish greater violation of the sum steering relation compared to the Reid criterion as well as the entropic steering criterion. The sum steering inequality provides a tighter steering condition to reveal the steerability of continuous variable states.
Incompatible observables can be approximated by compatible observables in joint measurement or measured sequentially, with constrained accuracy as implied by Heisenbergs original formulation of the uncertainty principle. Recently, Busch, Lahti, and W erner proposed inaccuracy trade-off relations based on statistical distances between probability distributions of measurement outcomes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 160405 (2013); Phys. Rev. A 89, 012129 (2014)]. Here we reform their theoretical framework, derive an improved relation for qubit measurement, and perform an experimental test on a spin system. The relation reveals that the worst-case inaccuracy is tightly bounded from below by the incompatibility of target observables, and is verified by the experiment employing joint measurement in which two compatible but typically non-commutative observables on one qubit are measured simultaneously.
Uncertainty principle is a striking and fundamental feature in quantum mechanics distinguishing from classical mechanics. It offers an important lower bound to predict outcomes of two arbitrary incompatible observables measured on a particle. In quan tum information theory, this uncertainty principle is popularly formulized in terms of entropy. Here, we present an improvement of tripartite quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation. The uncertaintys lower bound is derived by considering mutual information and Holevo quantity. It shows that the bound derived by this method will be tighter than the lower bound in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 020402 (2009)]. Furthermore, regarding a pair of mutual unbiased bases as the incompatibility, our bound will become extremely tight for the three-qubit $emph{X}$-state system, completely coinciding with the entropy-based uncertainty, and can restore Renes ${emph{et al.}}$s bound with respect to arbitrary tripartite pure states. In addition, by applying our lower bound, one can attain the tighter bound of quantum secret key rate, which is of basic importance to enhance the security of quantum key distribution protocols.

In a recent interesting Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 140401 (2012)] I. Bialynicki-Birula and his coauthor have derived the uncertainty relation for the photons in three dimensions. However, some of their arguments are problematical, and this impacts their conclusion.
