We demonstrate theoretically that a strong high-frequency circularly polarized electromagnetic field can turn a two-dimensional periodic array of interconnected quantum rings into a topological insulator. The elaborated approach is applicable to calculate and analyze the electron energy spectrum of the array, the energy spectrum of the edge states and the corresponding electronic densities. As a result, the present theory paves the way to optical control of the topological phases in ring-based mesoscopic structures.

We report on a strongly coupled bilayer graphene (BLG) - bise device with a junction resistance of less than 1.5 k$Omegamu$m$^2$. This device exhibits unique behavior at the interface, which cannot be attributed to either material in absence of the o ther. We observe quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistance of the junction, indicating the presence of well-resolved Landau levels due to hole carriers of unknown origin with a very large Fermi surface. These carriers, found only at the interface, could conceivably arise due to significant hole doping of the bilayer graphene with charge transfer on the order of 2$times$10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, or due to twist angle dependent mini-band transport.
Considering the quantum dynamics of 2DEG exposed to both a stationary magnetic field and an intense high-frequency electromagnetic wave, we found that the wave decreases the scattering-induced broadening of Landau levels. Therefore, various magnetoel ectronic properties of two-dimensional nanostructures (density of electronic states at Landau levels, magnetotransport, etc) are sensitive to the irradiation by light. Thus, the elaborated theory paves a way to optical controlling magnetic properties of 2DEG.
The emergence of topological order in graphene is in great demand for the realization of quantum spin Hall states. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the spin textures of surface states in topological insulator can be directly transferred to graphene by means of proximity effect. Here we report the observations of the topological proximity effect in the graphene-topological insulator Bi2Se3 heterojunctions via magnetotransport measurements. The coupling between the p_z orbitals of graphene and the p orbitals of surface states on the Bi2Se3 bottom surface can be enhanced by applying perpendicular negative magnetic field, resulting in a giant negative magnetoresistance at the Dirac point up to about -91%. An obvious resistivity dip in the transfer curve at the Dirac point is also observed in the hybrid devices, which is consistent with the theoretical predictions of the distorted Dirac bands with unique spin textures inherited from Bi2Se3 surface states.
We consider the coupling of a single mode microwave resonator to a tunnel junction whose contacts are at thermal equilibrium. We derive the quantum master equation describing the evolution of the resonator field in the strong coupling regime, where t he characteristic impedance of the resonator is larger than the quantum of resistance. We first study the case of a normal-insulator-normal junction and show that a dc driven single photon source can be obtained. We then consider the case of a superconductor-insulator-normal and superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction. There, we show that the Lamb shift induced by the junction gives rise to a nonlinear spectrum of the resonator even when the junction induced losses are negligible. We discuss the resulting dynamics and consider possible applications including quantum Zeno dynamics and the realization of a qubit.

Topological states of matter in equilibrium, as well as out of equilibrium, have been thoroughly investigated during the last years in condensed-matter and cold-atom systems. However, the geometric topology of the studied samples is usually trivial, such as a ribbon or a cylinder. In this paper, we consider a graphene Mobius band irradiated with circularly polarised light. Interestingly, due to the non-orientability of the Mobius band, a homogeneous quantum Hall effect cannot exist in this system, but the quantum spin Hall effect can. To avoid this restriction, the irradiation is applied in a longitudinal-domain-wall configuration. In this way, the periodic time-dependent driving term tends to generate the quantum anomalous Hall effect. On the other hand, due to the bent geometry of the Mobius band, we expect a strong spin-orbit coupling, which may lead to quantum spin Hall-like topological states. Here, we investigate the competition between these two phenomena upon varying the amplitude and the frequency of the light, for a fixed value of the spin-orbit coupling strength. The topological properties are analysed by identifying the edge states in the Floquet spectrum at intermediate frequencies, when there are resonances between the light frequency and the energy difference between the conduction and valence bands of the graphene system.
