Motivated by the discovery of multiferroicity in the geometrically frustrated triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO$_2$ below its Neel temperature $T_N$, we investigate its magnetic and ferroelectric properties using ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Exchange interactions up to the third nearest neighbors in the $ab$ plane, inter-layer interaction and single ion anisotropy constants in CuCrO$_2$ are estimated by series of density functional theory calculations. In particular, our results evidence a hard axis along the [110] direction due to the lattice distortion that takes place along this direction below $T_N$. Our Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the system possesses a Neel temperature $T_Napprox27$ K very close to the ones reported experimentally ($T_N = 24-26$ K). Also we show that the ground state is a proper-screw magnetic configuration with an incommensurate propagation vector pointing along the [110] direction. Moreover, our work reports the emergence of spin helicity below $T_N$ which leads to ferroelectricity in the extended inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya model. We confirm the electric control of spin helicity by simulating $P$-$E$ hysteresis loops at various temperatures.

Resonant photoemission spectroscopy has been used to investigate the character of Fe 3d states in FeAl alloy. Fe 3d states have two different character, first is of itinerant nature located very close to the Fermi level, and second, is of less itiner ant (relatively localized character), located beyond 2 eV below the Fermi level. These distinct states are clearly distinguishable in the resonant photoemission data. Comparison between the results obtained from experiments and first principle based electronic structure calculation show that the origin of the itinerant character of the Fe 3d states is due to the ordered B2 structure, whereas the relatively less itinerant (localized) Fe 3d states are from the disorders present in the sample. The exchange splitting of the Fe 3s core level peak confirms the presence of local moment in this system. It is found that the itinerant electrons arise due to the hybridization between Fe 3d and Al 3s-3p states. Presence of hybridization is observed as a shift in the Al 2p core-level spectra as well as in the X-ray near edge absorption spectra towards lower binding energy. Our photoemission results are thus explained by the co-existence of ordered and disordered phases in the system.
We performed high-pressure angle dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si up to 75 GPa. Both materials were synthesized in bulk quantities via a solid-state reaction. In the pressure range covered by the experiments, no evidence of the occurrence of phase transitions was observed. On top of that, Fe5Si3 was found to compress isotropically, whereas an anisotropic compression was observed in Ni2Si. The linear incompressibility of Ni2Si along the c-axis is similar in magnitude to the linear incompressibility of diamond. This fact is related to the higher valence-electron charge density of Ni2Si along the c-axis. The observed anisotropic compression of Ni2Si is also related to the layered structure of Ni2Si where hexagonal layers of Ni2+ cations alternate with graphite-like layers formed by (NiSi)2- entities. The experimental results are supported by ab initio total-energy calculations carried out using density functional theory and the pseudopotential method. For Fe5Si3, the calculations also predicted a phase transition at 283 GPa from the hexagonal P63/mcm phase to the cubic structure adopted by Fe and Si in the garnet Fe5Si3O12. The room-temperature equations of state for Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si are also reported and a possible correlation between the bulk modulus of iron silicides and the coordination number of their minority element is discussed. Finally, we report novel descriptions of these structures, in particular of the predicted high-pressure phase of Fe5Si3 (the cation subarray in the garnet Fe5Si3O12), which can be derived from spinel Fe2SiO4 (Fe6Si3O12).
The coupling between electrons and phonons in solids plays a central role in describing many phenomena, including superconductivity and thermoelecric transport. Calculations of this coupling are exceedingly demanding as they necessitate integrations over both the electron and phonon momenta, both of which span the Brillouin zone of the crystal, independently. We present here an ab initio method for efficiently calculating electron-phonon mediated transport properties by dramatically accelerating the computation of the double integrals with a dual interpolation technique that combines maximally localized Wannier functions with symmetry-adapted plane waves. The performance gain in relation to the current state-of-the-art Wannier-Fourier interpolation is approximately 2n_s times M, where n_s is the number of crystal symmetry operations and M, a number in the range 5 - 60, governs the expansion in star functions. We demonstrate with several examples how our method performs some ab initio calculations involving electron-phonon interactions.
Multiferroics are materials where two or more ferroic orders coexist owing to the interplay between spin, charge, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom. The explosive expansion of multiferroics literature in recent years demon-strates the fast growi ng interest in this field. In these studies, the first-principles calculation has played a pioneer role in the experiment explanation, mechanism discovery and prediction of novel multiferroics or magnetoelectric materials. In this review, we discuss, by no means comprehensively, the extensive applications and successful achievements of first-principles approach in the study of multiferroicity, magnetoelectric effect and tunnel junc-tions. In particular, we introduce some our recently developed methods, e.g., the orbital selective external potential (OSEP) method, which prove to be powerful tools in the finding of mechanisms responsible for the intriguing phe-nomena occurred in multiferroics or magnetoelectric materials. We also summarize first-principles studies on three types of electric control of magnetism, which is the common goal of both spintronics and multiferroics. Our review offers in depth understanding on the origin of ferroelectricity in transition metal oxides, and the coexistence of fer-roelectricity and ordered magnetism, and might be helpful to explore novel multiferroic or magnetoelectric materi-als in the future.
There is a continuous search for solid-state spin qubits operating at room temperature with excitation in the IR communication bandwidth. Recently we have introduced the photoelectric detection of magnetic resonance (PDMR) to read the electron spin s tate of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, a technique which is promising for applications in quantum information technology. By measuring photoionization spectra on a diamond crystal we found two ionization thresholds that were not reported before. On the same sample we also observed absorption and photoluminescence signatures that were identified in literature as Ni associated defects. We performed emph{ab initio} calculation of the photo-ionization cross-section of the nickel split vacancy complex (NiV) and N-related defects in their relevant charge states and fitted the concentration of these defects to the measured photocurrent spectrum, which led to a surprising match between experimental and calculated spectra. This study enabled to identify the two unknown ionization thresholds with the two acceptor levels of NiV. Because the excitation of NiV is in infrared, the photocurrent detected from the paramagnetic NiV color centers is a promising way towards designing a novel type of electrically readout qubits.
