In 1926, H. Busch formulated a theorem for one single charged particle moving along a region with a longitudinal magnetic field [H. Busch, Berechnung der Bahn von Kathodenstrahlen in axial symmetrischen electromagnetischen Felde, Z. Phys. 81 (5) p. 974, (1926)]. The theorem relates particle angular momentum to the amount of field lines being enclosed by the particle cyclotron motion. This paper extends the theorem to many particles forming a beam without cylindrical symmetry. A quantity being preserved is derived, which represents the sum of difference of eigen-emittances, magnetic flux through the beam area, and beam rms-vorticity multiplied by the magnetic flux. Tracking simulations and analytical calculations using the generalized Courant-Snyder formalism confirm the validity of the extended theorem. The new theorem has been applied for fast modelling of experiments with electron and ion beams on transverse emittance re-partitioning conducted at FERMILAB and at GSI.

Consider a measurable space with a finite vector measure. This measure defines a mapping of the $sigma$-field into a Euclidean space. According to Lyapunovs convexity theorem, the range of this mapping is compact and, if the measure is atomless, this range is convex. Similar ranges are also defined for measurable subsets of the space. We show that the union of the ranges of all subsets having the same given vector measure is also compact and, if the measure is atomless, it is convex. We further provide a geometrically constructed convex compactum in the Euclidean space that contains this union. The equality of these two sets, that holds for two-dimensional measures, can be violated in higher dimensions.
This paper examines discreteness effects in nearly collisionless N-body systems of charged particles interacting via an unscreened r^-2 force, allowing for bulk potentials admitting both regular and chaotic orbits. Both for ensembles and individual o rbits, as N increases there is a smooth convergence towards a continuum limit. Discreteness effects are well modeled by Gaussian white noise with relaxation time t_R = const * (N/log L)t_D, with L the Coulomb logarithm and t_D the dynamical time scale. Discreteness effects accelerate emittance growth for initially localised clumps. However, even allowing for discreteness effects one can distinguish between orbits which, in the continuum limit, feel a regular potential, so that emittance grows as a power law in time, and chaotic orbits, where emittance grows exponentially. For sufficiently large N, one can distinguish two different `kinds of chaos. Short range microchaos, associated with close encounters between charges, is a generic feature, yielding large positive Lyapunov exponents X_N which do not decrease with increasing N even if the bulk potential is integrable. Alternatively, there is the possibility of larger scale macrochaos, characterised by smaller Lyapunov exponents X_S, which is present only if the bulk potential is chaotic. Conventional computations of Lyapunov exponents probe X_N, leading to the oxymoronic conclusion that N-body orbits which look nearly regular and have sharply peaked Fourier spectra are `very chaotic. However, the `range of the microchaos, set by the typical interparticle spacing, decreases as N increases, so that, for large N, this microchaos, albeit very strong, is largely irrelevant macroscopically. A more careful numerical analysis allows one to estimate both X_N and X_S.
Experimental results and simulation models show that crystals might play a relevant role for the development of new generations of high-energy and high-intensity particle accelerators and might disclose innovative possibilities at existing ones. In t his paper we describe the most advanced manufacturing techniques of crystals suitable for operations at ultra-high energy and ultra-high intensity particle accelerators, reporting as an example of potential applications the collimation of the particle beams circulating in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which will be upgraded through the addition of bent crystals in the frame of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project.
A classical theorem of Herglotz states that a function $nmapsto r(n)$ from $mathbb Z$ into $mathbb C^{stimes s}$ is positive definite if and only there exists a $mathbb C^{stimes s}$-valued positive measure $dmu$ on $[0,2pi]$ such that $r(n)=int_0^{2 pi}e^{int}dmu(t)$for $nin mathbb Z$. We prove a quaternionic analogue of this result when the function is allowed to have a number of negative squares. A key tool in the argument is the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, and the representation of such functions which have a positive real part in the unit ball of the quaternions. We study in great detail the case of positive definite functions.

Sahlqvist formulas are a syntactically specified class of modal formulas proposed by Hendrik Sahlqvist in 1975. They are important because of their first-order definability and canonicity, and hence axiomatize complete modal logics. The first-order p roperties definable by Sahlqvist formulas were syntactically characterized by Marcus Kracht in 1993. The present paper extends Krachts theorem to the class of `generalized Sahlqvist formulas introduced by Goranko and Vakarelov and describes an appropriate generalization of Kracht formulas.
