Quantum critical points (QCPs) emerge when a 2nd order phase transition is suppressed to zero temperature. In metals the quantum fluctuations at such a QCP can give rise to new phases including unconventional superconductivity. Whereas antiferromagnetic QCPs have been studied in considerable detail ferromagnetic (FM) QCPs are much harder to access. In almost all metals FM QCPs are avoided through either a change to 1st order transitions or through an intervening spin-density-wave (SDW) phase. Here, we study the prototype of the second case, NbFe$_2$. We demonstrate that the phase diagram can be modelled using a two-order-parameter theory in which the putative FM QCP is buried within a SDW phase. We establish the presence of quantum tricritical points (QTCPs) at which both the uniform and finite $q$ susceptibility diverge. The universal nature of our model suggests that such QTCPs arise naturally from the interplay between SDW and FM order and exist generally near a buried FM QCP of this type. Our results promote NbFe$_2$ as the first example of a QTCP, which has been proposed as a key concept in a range of narrow-band metals, including the prominent heavy-fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$.

We present a renormalization group treatment of quantum tricriticality in metals. Applying a set of flow equations derived within the functional renormalization group framework we evaluate the correlation length in the quantum critical region of the phase diagram, extending into finite temperatures above the quantum critical or tricritical point. We calculate the finite temperature phase boundaries and analyze the crossover behavior when the system is tuned between quantum criticality and quantum tricriticality.
In the metallic magnet Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$, the low temperature threshold of ferromagnetism can be investigated by varying the Fe excess $y$ within a narrow homogeneity range. We use elastic neutron scattering to track the evolution of magnetic orde r from Fe-rich, ferromagnetic Nb$_{0.981}$Fe$_{2.019}$ to approximately stoichiometric NbFe$_2$, in which we can, for the first time, characterise a long-wavelength spin density wave state burying a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. The associated ordering wavevector $mathbf{q}_{rm SDW}=$(0,0,$l_{rm SDW}$) is found to depend significantly on $y$ and $T$, staying finite but decreasing as the ferromagnetic state is approached. The phase diagram follows a two order-parameter Landau theory, for which all the coefficients can now be determined. Our findings suggest that the emergence of SDW order cannot be attributed to band structure effects alone. They indicate a common microscopic origin of both types of magnetic order and provide strong constraints on related theoretical scenarios based on, e.g., quantum order by disorder.

The spin wave excitations emerging from the chiral helically modulated 120$^{circ}$ magnetic order in a langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ enantiopure crystal were investigated by unpolarized and polarized inelastic neutron scattering. A dynamica l fingerprint of the chiral ground state is obtained, singularized by (i) spectral weight asymmetries answerable to the structural chirality and (ii) a full chirality of the spin correlations observed over the whole energy spectrum. The intrinsic chiral nature of the spin waves elementary excitations is shown in absence of macroscopic time reversal symmetry breaking.
Using density functional theory we investigate the evolution of the magnetic ground state of NbFe$_{2}$ due to doping by Nb-excess and Fe-excess. We find that non-rigid-band effects, due to the contribution of Fe-textit{d} states to the density of st ates at the Fermi level are crucial to the evolution of the magnetic phase diagram. Furthermore, the influence of disorder is important to the development of ferromagnetism upon Nb doping. These findings give a framework in which to understand the evolution of the magnetic ground state in the temperature-doping phase diagram. We investigate the magnetic instabilities in NbFe$_{2}$. We find that explicit calculation of the Lindhard function, $chi_{0}(mathbf{q})$, indicates that the primary instability is to finite $mathbf{q}$ antiferromagnetism driven by Fermi surface nesting. Total energy calculations indicate that $mathbf{q}=0$ antiferromagnetism is the ground state. We discuss the influence of competing $mathbf{q}=0$ and finite $mathbf{q}$ instabilities on the presence of the non-Fermi liquid behavior in this material.

We have determined the terahertz spectrum of the chiral langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ by means of synchrotron-radiation measurements. Two excitations are revealed that are shown to have a different nature. The first one, purely magnetic, is observed at low temperature in the magnetically ordered phase and is assigned to a magnon. The second one persits far into the paramagnetic phase and exhibits both an electric and a magnetic activity at slightly different energies. This magnetoelectric excitation is interpreted in terms of atomic rotations and requires a helical electric polarization.
