We study heat flux avalanches occurring at the first order transition in La(Fe-Mn-Si)$_{13}$-H$_{1.65}$ magnetocaloric material. As the transition is associated to the phase boundaries motion that gives rise to the latent heat, we develop a non equilibrium thermodynamic model. By comparing the model with experimental calorimetry data available for Mn=0.18, we find the values of the intrinsic kinetic parameter $R_L$, expressing the damping for the moving boundary interface, at different magnetic fields. We conclude that by increasing field, thus approaching the critical point, the avalanches increase in number and their kinetics is slowed down.

The phase transformation kinetics of LaFe$_{11.41}$Mn$_{0.30}$Si$_{1.29}$-H$_{1.65}$ magnetocaloric compound is addressed by low rate calorimetry experiments. Scans at 1 mK/s show that its first order phase transitions are made by multiple heat fllux avalanches. Getting very close to the critical point, the step-like discontinuous behavior associated with avalanches is smoothed out and thermal hysteresis disappears. This result is confirmed by magneto-resistivity measurements and allows to measure accurate values of the zero field hysteresis ($Delta T_{hyst}$ = 0.37 K) and of the critical field (H$_c$ = 1.19 T). The number and magnitude of heat flux avalanches change with magnetic field, showing the interplay between the intrinsic energy barrier between phases and the microstructural disorder of the sample.
We used temperature dependent high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction and magnetization measurements to investigate structural, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom across the ferromagnetic magneto-elastic phase transition in Mn1Fe1P0.6-wSi0.4 Bw (w = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08). The magnetic transition was gradually tuned from a strong first-order (w = 0) towards a second-order magnetic transition by substituting P by B. Increasing the B content leads to a systematic increase in the magnetic transition temperature and a decrease in thermal hysteresis, which completely vanishes for w = 0.08. Furthermore, the largest changes in lattice parameter across the magnetic transition occur for w = 0, which systematically becomes smaller approaching the samples with w = 0.08. Electron density plots show a strong directional preference of the electronic distribution on the Fe site, which indicates the forming of bonds between Fe atoms and Fe and P/Si in the paramagnetic phase. On the other hand, the Mn-site shows no preferred directions resembling the behaviour of a free electron gas. Due to the low B concentrations (w = 0 - 0.08), distortions of the lattice are limited. However, even small amounts of B strongly disturb the overall topology of the electron density across the unit cell. Samples containing B show a strongly reduced variation in the electron density compared to the parent compound without B.
Magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance have been studied in Dy(Co1-xSix)2 [x=0, 0.075 and 0.15] compounds. Magnetocaloric effect has been calculated in terms of adiabatic temperatue change (Delta Tad) as well as isothermal magnetic entropy chang e (Delta SM) using the heat capacity data. The maximum values of DeltaSM and DeltaTad for DyCo2 are found to be 11.4 JKg-1K-1 and 5.4 K, respectively. Both DSM and DTad decrease with Si concentration, reaching a value of 5.4 JKg-1K-1 and 3 K, respectively for x=0.15. The maximum magnetoresistance is found to about 32% in DyCo2, which decreases with increase in Si. These variations are explained on the basis of itinerant electron metamagnetism occurring in these compounds.

This study presents the effect of local electronic correlations on the Heusler compounds Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si as a function of the concentration $x$. The analysis has been performed by means of first-principles band-structure calculations based o n the local approximation to spin-density functional theory (LSDA). Correlation effects are treated in terms of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) and the LSDA+U approach. The formalism is implemented within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Greens function method. In good agreement with the available experimental data the magnetic and spectroscopic properties of the compound are explained in terms of strong electronic correlations. In addition the correlation effects have been analysed separately with respect to their static or dynamical origin. To achieve a quantitative description of the electronic structure of Co$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si both static and dynamic correlations must be treated on equal footing.
Pulsed laser deposition was employed to grow thin films of the Heusler compounds Co_2MnSi and Co_2FeSi. Epitaxial growth was realized both directly on MgO (100) and on a Cr or Fe buffer layer. Structural analysis by x-ray and electron diffraction sho ws for both materials the ordered L2_1 structure. Bulk magnetization was determined with a SQUID magnetometer. The values agree with the Slater-Pauling rule for half-metallic Heusler compounds. On the films grown directly on the substrate measurements of the Hall effect have been performed. The normal Hall effect is nearly temperature independent and points towards a compensated Fermi surface. The anomalous contribution is found to be dominated by skew scattering. A remarkable sign change of both normal and anomalous Hall coefficients is observed on changing the valence electron count from 29 (Mn) to 30 (Fe).
