For the accurate representation and reconstruction of band-limited signals on the sphere, an optimal-dimensionality sampling scheme has been recently proposed which requires the optimal number of samples equal to the number of degrees of freedom of the signal in the spectral (harmonic) domain. The computation of the spherical harmonic transform (SHT) associated with the optimal-dimensionality sampling requires the inversion of a series of linear systems in an iterative manner. The stability of the inversion depends on the placement of iso-latitude rings of samples along co-latitude. In this work, we have developed a method to place these iso-latitude rings of samples with the objective of improving the well-conditioning of the linear systems involved in the computation of the SHT. We also propose a multi-pass SHT algorithm to iteratively improve the accuracy of the SHT of band-limited signals. Furthermore, we review the changes in the computational complexity and improvement in accuracy of the SHT with the embedding of the proposed methods. Through numerical experiments, we illustrate that the proposed variations and improvements in the SHT algorithm corresponding to the optimal-dimensionality sampling scheme significantly enhance the accuracy of the SHT.

For the representation of spin-$s$ band-limited functions on the sphere, we propose a sampling scheme with optimal number of samples equal to the number of degrees of freedom of the function in harmonic space. In comparison to the existing sampling d esigns, which require ${sim}2L^2$ samples for the representation of spin-$s$ functions band-limited at $L$, the proposed scheme requires $N_o=L^2-s^2$ samples for the accurate computation of the spin-$s$ spherical harmonic transform~($s$-SHT). For the proposed sampling scheme, we also develop a method to compute the $s$-SHT. We place the samples in our design scheme such that the matrices involved in the computation of $s$-SHT are well-conditioned. We also present a multi-pass $s$-SHT to improve the accuracy of the transform. We also show the proposed sampling design exhibits superior geometrical properties compared to existing equiangular and Gauss-Legendre sampling schemes, and enables accurate computation of the $s$-SHT corroborated through numerical experiments.
We discuss a novel sampling theorem on the sphere developed by McEwen & Wiaux recently through an association between the sphere and the torus. To represent a band-limited signal exactly, this new sampling theorem requires less than half the number o f samples of other equiangular sampling theorems on the sphere, such as the canonical Driscoll & Healy sampling theorem. A reduction in the number of samples required to represent a band-limited signal on the sphere has important implications for compressive sensing, both in terms of the dimensionality and sparsity of signals. We illustrate the impact of this property with an inpainting problem on the sphere, where we show superior reconstruction performance when adopting the new sampling theorem.

We develop a novel sampling theorem on the sphere and corresponding fast algorithms by associating the sphere with the torus through a periodic extension. The fundamental property of any sampling theorem is the number of samples required to represent a band-limited signal. To represent exactly a signal on the sphere band-limited at L, all sampling theorems on the sphere require O(L^2) samples. However, our sampling theorem requires less than half the number of samples of other equiangular sampling theorems on the sphere and an asymptotically identical, but smaller, number of samples than the Gauss-Legendre sampling theorem. The complexity of our algorithms scale as O(L^3), however, the continual use of fast Fourier transforms reduces the constant prefactor associated with the asymptotic scaling considerably, resulting in algorithms that are fast. Furthermore, we do not require any precomputation and our algorithms apply to both scalar and spin functions on the sphere without any change in computational complexity or computation time. We make our implementation of these algorithms available publicly and perform numerical experiments demonstrating their speed and accuracy up to very high band-limits. Finally, we highlight the advantages of our sampling theorem in the context of potential applications, notably in the field of compressive sampling.

We propose a sampling scheme that can perfectly reconstruct a collection of spikes on the sphere from samples of their lowpass-filtered observations. Central to our algorithm is a generalization of the annihilating filter method, a tool widely used i n array signal processing and finite-rate-of-innovation (FRI) sampling. The proposed algorithm can reconstruct $K$ spikes from $(K+sqrt{K})^2$ spatial samples. This sampling requirement improves over previously known FRI sampling schemes on the sphere by a factor of four for large $K$. We showcase the versatility of the proposed algorithm by applying it to three different problems: 1) sampling diffusion processes induced by localized sources on the sphere, 2) shot noise removal, and 3) sound source localization (SSL) by a spherical microphone array. In particular, we show how SSL can be reformulated as a spherical sparse sampling problem.
We consider a joint sampling and scheduling problem for optimizing data freshness in multi-source systems. Data freshness is measured by a non-decreasing penalty function of emph{age of information}, where all sources have the same age-penalty functi on. Sources take turns to generate update packets, and forward them to their destinations one-by-one through a shared channel with random delay. There is a scheduler, that chooses the update order of the sources, and a sampler, that determines when a source should generate a new packet in its turn. We aim to find the optimal scheduler-sampler pairs that minimize the total-average age-penalty at delivery times (Ta-APD) and the total-average age-penalty (Ta-AP). We prove that the Maximum Age First (MAF) scheduler and the zero-wait sampler are jointly optimal for minimizing the Ta-APD. Meanwhile, the MAF scheduler and a relative value iteration with reduced complexity (RVI-RC) sampler are jointly optimal for minimizing the Ta-AP. The RVI-RC sampler is based on a relative value iteration algorithm whose complexity is reduced by exploiting a threshold property in the optimal sampler. Finally, a low-complexity threshold-type sampler is devised via an approximate analysis of Bellmans equation. This threshold-type sampler reduces to a simple water-filling sampler for a linear age-penalty function.
