We propose a model based on extreme value statistics (EVS) and combine it with different models for single asperity contact, including adhesive and elasto-plastic contacts, to derive a relation between the applied load and the friction force on a rough interface. We find that when the summit distribution is Gumbel, and the contact model is Hertzian we have the closest conformity with Amontons law. The range over which Gumbel distribution mimics Amontons law is wider than the Greenwood-Williamson Model. However exact conformity with Amontons law does not seem for any of the well-known EVS distributions. On the other hand plastic deformations in contact area reduce the relative change of pressure slightly with Gumbel distribution. Elastic-plastic contact mixes with Gumbel distribution for summits. it shows the best conformity with Amonton`s law. Other extreme value statistics are also studied, and results presented. We combine Gumbel distribution with GW-Mc Cool model which is an improved case of GW model, it takes into account a bandwidth for wavelengths of {alpha}. Comparison of this model with original GW-Mc Cool model and other simplifie

We show that the dynamics of simple disordered models, like the directed Trap Model and the Random Energy Model, takes place at a coexistence point between active and inactive dynamical phases. We relate the presence of a dynamic phase transition in these models to the extreme value statistics of the associated random energy landscape.
Simulated granular packings with different particle friction coefficient mu are examined. The distribution of the particle-particle and particle-wall normal and tangential contact forces P(f) are computed and compared with existing experimental data. Here f equivalent to F/F-bar is the contact force F normalized by the average value F-bar. P(f) exhibits exponential-like decay at large forces, a plateau/peak near f = 1, with additional features at forces smaller than the average that depend on mu. Computations of the force-force spatial distribution function and the contact point radial distribution function indicate that correlations between forces are only weakly dependent on friction and decay rapidly beyond approximately three particle diameters. Distributions of the particle-particle contact angles show that the contact network is not isotropic and only weakly dependent on friction. High force-bearing structures, or force chains, do not play a dominant role in these three dimensional, unloaded packings.

In this paper, we propose a new derivation for the Green-Kubo relationship for the liquid-solid friction coefficient, characterizing hydrodynamic slippage at a wall. It is based on a general Langevin approach for the fluctuating wall velocity, involv ing a non-markovian memory kernel with vanishing time integral. The calculation highlights some subtleties of the wall-liquid dynamics, leading to superdiffusive motion of the fluctuating wall position.
Markov State Modeling has recently emerged as a key technique for analyzing rare events in thermal equilibrium molecular simulations and finding metastable states. Here we export this technique to the study of friction, where strongly non-equilibrium events are induced by an external force. The approach is benchmarked on the well-studied Frenkel-Kontorova model, where we demonstrate the unprejudiced identification of the minimal basis microscopic states necessary for describing sliding, stick-slip and dissipation. The steps necessary for the application to realistic frictional systems are highlighted.

We study the random sequential adsorption of $k$-mers on the fully-connected lattice with $N=kn$ sites. The probability distribution $T_n(s,t)$ of the time $t$ needed to cover the lattice with $s$ $k$-mers is obtained using a generating function appr oach. In the low coverage scaling limit where $s,n,ttoinfty$ with $y=s/n^{1/2}={mathrm O}(1)$ the random variable $t-s$ follows a Poisson distribution with mean $ky^2/2$. In the intermediate coverage scaling limit, when both $s$ and $n-s$ are ${mathrm O}(n)$, the mean value and the variance of the covering time are growing as $n$ and the fluctuations are Gaussian. When full coverage is approached the scaling functions diverge, which is the signal of a new scaling behaviour. Indeed, when $u=n-s={mathrm O}(1)$, the mean value of the covering time grows as $n^k$ and the variance as $n^{2k}$, thus $t$ is strongly fluctuating and no longer self-averaging. In this scaling regime the fluctuations are governed, for each value of $k$, by a different extreme value distribution, indexed by $u$. Explicit results are obtained for monomers (generalized Gumbel distribution) and dimers.
