The existing results on controllability of multi-agents networks are mostly based on homogeneous nodes. This paper focuses on controllability of heterogeneous multi-agent networks, where the agents are modeled as two types. One type is that the agents are of the same high-order dynamics, and the interconnection topologies of the information flow in different orders are supposed to be different. It is proved that a heterogeneous-topology network is controllable if and only if the first-order information topology is leader-follower connected, and there exists a Laplacian matrix, which is a linear combination of the Laplacian matrices of each order information, whose corresponding topology is controllable. The other type is that the agents are of generic linear dynamics, and the dynamics are supposed to be heterogeneous. A necessary and sufficient condition for controllability of heterogeneous-dynamic networks is that each agent contains a controllable dynamic part, and the interconnection topology of the network is leader-follower connected. If some dynamics of the agents are not controllable, the controllability between the agents and the whole network is also studied by introducing the concept of eigenvector-uncontrollable. Different illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results in this paper.

This paper deals with the H2 suboptimal output synchronization problem for heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems. Given a multi-agent system with possibly distinct agents and an associated H2 cost functional, the aim is to design output feedback b ased protocols that guarantee the associated cost to be smaller than a given upper bound while the controlled network achieves output synchronization. A design method is provided to compute such protocols. For each agent, the computation of its two local control gains involves two Riccati inequalities, each of dimension equal to the state space dimension of the agent. A simulation example is provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed protocols.
This paper studies the controllability of networked multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems, in which the network topology is weighted and directed, and the nodes are heterogeneous higher-dimensional linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamical systems. The primary objective is to search for controllability criteria beyond those already known for homogeneous networks. The focus is on the effects of the network topology, node dynamics, external control inputs, as well as the inner interactions on the network controllability. It is found that a network of heterogeneous systems can be controllable even if the corresponding homogeneous network topology is uncontrollable. The finding thus unravels another fundamental property that affects the network controllability---the heterogeneity of the node dynamics. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the controllability of heterogeneous networked MIMO LTI systems. For some typical cases, necessary and/or sufficient controllability conditions are specified and presented on the node dynamics, inner interactions, as well as the network topology.
This paper deals with data-driven output synchronization for heterogeneous leader-follower linear multi-agent systems. Given a multi-agent system that consists of one autonomous leader and a number of heterogeneous followers with external disturbance s, we provide necessary and sufficient data-based conditions for output synchronization. We also provide a design method for obtaining such output synchronizing protocols directly from data. The results are then extended to the special case that the followers are disturbance-free. Finally, a simulation example is provided to illustrate our results.

In this paper, we investigate a constrained optimal coordination problem for a class of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems described by high-order dynamics subject to both unknown nonlinearities and external disturbances. Each agent has a pr ivate objective function and a constraint about its output. A neural network-based distributed controller is developed for each agent such that all agent outputs can reach the constrained minimal point of the aggregate objective function with bounded residual errors. Two examples are finally given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.
In this paper we propose a novel consensus protocol for discrete-time multi-agent systems (MAS), which solves the dynamic consensus problem on the max value, i.e., the dynamic max-consensus problem. In the dynamic max-consensus problem to each agent is fed a an exogenous reference signal, the objective of each agent is to estimate the instantaneous and time-varying value of the maximum among the signals fed to the network, by exploiting only local and anonymous interactions among the agents. The absolute and relative tracking error of the proposed distributed control protocol is theoretically characterized and is shown to be bounded and by tuning its parameters it is possible to trade-off convergence time for steady-state error. The dynamic Max-consensus algorithm is then applied to solve the distributed size estimation problem in a dynamic setting where the size of the network is time-varying during the execution of the estimation algorithm. Numerical simulations are provided to corroborate the theoretical analysis.
