The complexity of the maximum common connected subgraph problem in partial $k$-trees is still not fully understood. Polynomial-time solutions are known for degree-bounded outerplanar graphs, a subclass of the partial $2$-trees. On the other hand, the problem is known to be ${bf NP}$-hard in vertex-labeled partial $11$-trees of bounded degree. We consider series-parallel graphs, i.e., partial $2$-trees. We show that the problem remains ${bf NP}$-hard in biconnected series-parallel graphs with all but one vertex of degree $3$ or less. A positive complexity result is presented for a related problem of high practical relevance which asks for a maximum common connected subgraph that preserves blocks and bridges of the input graphs. We present a polynomial time algorithm for this problem in series-parallel graphs, which utilizes a combination of BC- and SP-tree data structures to decompose both graphs.

Schietgat, Ramon and Bruynooghe proposed a polynomial-time algorithm for computing a maximum common subgraph under the block-and-bridge preserving subgraph isomorphism (BBP-MCS) for outerplanar graphs. We show that the article contains the following errors: (i) The running time of the presented approach is claimed to be $mathcal{O}(n^{2.5})$ for two graphs of order $n$. We show that the algorithm of the authors allows no better bound than $mathcal{O}(n^4)$ when using state-of-the-art general purpose methods to solve the matching instances arising as subproblems. This is even true for the special case, where both input graphs are trees. (ii) The article suggests that the dissimilarity measure derived from BBP-MCS is a metric. We show that the triangle inequality is not always satisfied and, hence, it is not a metric. Therefore, the dissimilarity measure should not be used in combination with techniques that rely on or exploit the triangle inequality in any way. Where possible, we give hints on techniques that are suitable to improve the algorithm.
A bipartite graph $G=(A,B,E)$ is ${cal H}$-convex, for some family of graphs ${cal H}$, if there exists a graph $Hin {cal H}$ with $V(H)=A$ such that the set of neighbours in $A$ of each $bin B$ induces a connected subgraph of $H$. Many $mathsf{NP}$- complete problems, including problems such as Dominating Set, Feedback Vertex Set, Induced Matching and List $k$-Colouring, become polynomial-time solvable for ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs when ${mathcal H}$ is the set of paths. In this case, the class of ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs is known as the class of convex graphs. The underlying reason is that the class of convex graphs has bounded mim-width. We extend the latter result to families of ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs where (i) ${mathcal H}$ is the set of cycles, or (ii) ${mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with bounded maximum degree and a bounded number of vertices of degree at least $3$. As a consequence, we can re-prove and strengthen a large number of results on generalized convex graphs known in the literature. To complement result (ii), we show that the mim-width of ${mathcal H}$-convex graphs is unbounded if ${mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with arbitrarily large maximum degree or an arbitrarily large number of vertices of degree at least $3$. In this way we are able to determine complexity dichotomies for the aforementioned graph problems. Afterwards we perform a more refined width-parameter analysis, which shows even more clearly which width parameters are bounded for classes of ${cal H}$-convex graphs.
In this article, we study a generalized version of the maximum independent set and minimum dominating set problems, namely, the maximum $d$-distance independent set problem and the minimum $d$-distance dominating set problem on unit disk graphs for a positive integer $d>0$. We first show that the maximum $d$-distance independent set problem and the minimum $d$-distance dominating set problem belongs to NP-hard class. Next, we propose a simple polynomial-time constant-factor approximation algorithms and PTAS for both the problems.

We propose a weighted common subgraph (WCS) matching algorithm to find the most similar subgraphs in two labeled weighted graphs. WCS matching, as a natural generalization of the equal-sized graph matching or subgraph matching, finds wide application s in many computer vision and machine learning tasks. In this paper, the WCS matching is first formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem over the set of partial permutation matrices. Then it is approximately solved by a recently proposed combinatorial optimization framework - Graduated NonConvexity and Concavity Procedure (GNCCP). Experimental comparisons on both synthetic graphs and real world images validate its robustness against noise level, problem size, outlier number, and edge density.
We use activity networks (task graphs) to model parallel programs and consider series-parallel extensions of these networks. Our motivation is two-fold: the benefits of series-parallel activity networks and the modelling of programming constructs, su ch as those imposed by current parallel computing environments. Series-parallelisation adds precedence constraints to an activity network, usually increasing its makespan (execution time). The slowdown ratio describes how additional constraints affect the makespan. We disprove an existing conjecture positing a bound of two on the slowdown when workload is not considered. Where workload is known, we conjecture that 4/3 slowdown is always achievable, and prove our conjecture for small networks using max-plus algebra. We analyse a polynomial-time algorithm showing that achieving 4/3 slowdown is in exp-APX. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results.
