A tetragonal photonic crystal composed of high-index pillars can exhibit a frequency-isolated accidental degeneracy at a high-symmetry point in the first Brillouin zone. A photonic band gap can be formed there by introducing a geometrical anisotropy in the pillars. In this gap, gapless surface/domain-wall states emerge under a certain condition. We analyze their physical property in terms of an effective hamiltonian, and a good agreement between the effective theory and numerical calculation is obtained.

The formation of bound states between mobile impurity particles and fermionic atoms has been demonstrated in spin-polarized Fermi gases with attractive interspecies interaction. We investigate bound states of mobile impurities immersed in a two-dimen sional system with a symmetry-protected quadratic band touching. In addition to the standard s-wave interaction, we consider an anisotropic dipolar exchange interaction that locally breaks point group symmetries. Using a weak-coupling renormalization group approach and a ladder approximation for the impurity-fermion propagator, we establish that the number of bound states can be controlled by varying the anisotropy of the exchange interaction. Our results show that the degeneracy and momentum dependence of the binding energies reflect some distinctive properties of the quadratic band touching.
In the last decade, symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) have proven to be an important design principle for creating and enhancing devices reliant upon states with high quality (Q) factors, such as sensors, lasers, and those for h armonic generation. However, as we show, current implementations of symmetry-protected BICs in photonic crystal slabs can only be found at the center of the Brillouin zone and below the Bragg-diffraction limit, which fundamentally restricts their use to single-frequency applications. By 3D-micro printing a photonic crystal structure using two-photon polymerization, we demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by altering the radiative environment surrounding the slab to be a three-dimensional photonic crystal. This allows for the protection of a line of BICs by embedding it in a symmetry bandgap of the crystal. Moreover, we experimentally verify that just a single layer of this photonic crystal environment is sufficient. This concept significantly expands the design freedom available for developing next-generation devices with high-Q states.

We present the emergence of gapless surface states in a three-dimensional Chalker-Coddington type network model with spatial periodicity. The model consists of a ring network placed on every face of the cubic unit cells in the simple cubic lattice. T he scattering among ring-propagating modes in the adjacent rings is described by the S-matrices, which control possible symmetries of the system. The model maps to a Floquet-Bloch system, and the quasienergy spectrum can exhibit a gapped bulk band structure and gapless surface states. Symmetry properties of the system and robustness of the gapless surface states are explored in comparison to topological crystalline insulator. We also discuss other crystal structures, a gauge symmetry, and a possible optical realization of the network model.
An ultra-compact one-dimensional topological photonic crystal (1D-TPC) is designed in a single mode silicon bus-waveguide to generate Fano resonance lineshape. The Fano resonance comes from the interference between the discrete topological boundary s tate of the 1D-TPC and the continuum high-order leaky mode of the bus-waveguide. Standalone asymmetric Fano resonance lineshapes are obtained experimentally in the waveguide transmission spectrum with a maximum extinction ratio of 33 dB and a slope ratio of 10 dB/nm over a broadband flat background.
We study the configuration of efficient nonlinear Cerenkov diffraction generated from a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal surface, which underlies the incorporation of both quasi-phase-matching and total internal reflection by the crystal su rface. Multidirectional radiation spots with different Cerenkov angles are demonstrated experimentally, which results from different orders of reciprocal vectors. At specific angles, the incident light and total internal reflect light associating with quasi-phase-matching format completely phase-matching scheme, leading to great enhancement of harmonic efficiency.
