We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach to a heralded single photon source based on spectral multiplexing (SMUX) and feed-forward-based spectral manipulation of photons created by means of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically-poled LiNbO3 crystal. As a proof-of-principle, we show that our 3-mode SMUX increases the heralded single-photon rate compared to that of the individual modes without compromising the quality of the emitted single-photons. We project that by adding further modes, our approach can lead to a deterministic SPS.

Future multi-photon applications of quantum optics and quantum information science require quantum memories that simultaneously store many photon states, each encoded into a different optical mode, and enable one to select the mapping between any inp ut and a specific retrieved mode during storage. Here we show, with the example of a quantum repeater, how to employ spectrally-multiplexed states and memories with fixed storage times that allow such mapping between spectral modes. Furthermore, using a Ti:Tm:LiNbO3 waveguide cooled to 3 Kelvin, a phase modulator, and a spectral filter, we demonstrate storage followed by the required feed-forward-controlled frequency manipulation with time-bin qubits encoded into up to 26 multiplexed spectral modes and 97% fidelity.
Evolving photonic quantum technologies and applications require higher and higher rates of single photon generation. In parallel, it is required that these generated photons are kept spectrally pure for multi-photon experiments and that multi-photon noise be kept to a minimum. In spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources, these requirements are conflicting, because spectral filtering to increase spectral purity always means lowering the rate at which photons are generated, and increasing the pump power means increasing the multi-photon noise. In this paper, we present a scheme, called extended heralding, which aims to mitigate the reduction of single-photon generation rate under spectral filtering by removing cases where we detect light in the rejection band of the heralding photons filter. Our experiment shows that this allows for higher single-photon generation rates with lower multi-photon noise than the standard approach of neglecting modes falling out of the filter bandwidth. We also show that by using active feed-forward control based on this extended heralding, it is possible to further improve the performance of the original source by physically eliminating uncorrelated photons from the output stream.
The non-deterministic nature of photon sources is a key limitation for single photon quantum processors. Spatial multiplexing overcomes this by enhancing the heralded single photon yield without enhancing the output noise. Here the intrinsic statisti cal limit of an individual source is surpassed by spatially multiplexing two monolithic silicon correlated photon pair sources, demonstrating a 62.4% increase in the heralded single photon output without an increase in unwanted multi-pair generation. We further demonstrate the scalability of this scheme by multiplexing photons generated in two waveguides pumped via an integrated coupler with a 63.1% increase in the heralded photon rate. This demonstration paves the way for a scalable architecture for multiplexing many photon sources in a compact integrated platform and achieving efficient two photon interference, required at the core of optical quantum computing and quantum communication protocols.
Single-photon sources based on optical parametric processes have been used extensively for quantum information applications due to their flexibility, room-temperature operation and potential for photonic integration. However, the intrinsically probab ilistic nature of these sources is a major limitation for realizing large-scale quantum networks. Active feedforward switching of photons from multiple probabilistic sources is a promising approach that can be used to build a deterministic source. However, previous implementations of this approach that utilize spatial and/or temporal multiplexing suffer from rapidly increasing switching losses when scaled to a large number of modes. Here, we break this limitation via frequency multiplexing in which the switching losses remain fixed irrespective of the number of modes. We use the third-order nonlinear process of Bragg scattering four-wave mixing as an efficient ultra-low noise frequency switch and demonstrate multiplexing of three frequency modes. We achieve a record generation rate of $4.6times10^4$ multiplexed photons per second with an ultra-low $g^{2}(0)$ = 0.07, indicating high single-photon purity. Our scalable, all-fiber multiplexing system has a total loss of just 1.3 dB independent of the number of multiplexed modes, such that the 4.8 dB enhancement from multiplexing three frequency modes markedly overcomes switching loss. Our approach offers a highly promising path to creating a deterministic photon source that can be integrated on a chip-based platform.
Heralded single-photon source (HSPS) with competitive single photon purity and indistinguishability has become an essential resource for photonic quantum information processing. Here, for the first time, we proposed a theoretical regime to enhance he ralded single-photons generation by multiplexing the degree of the freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of down-converted entangled photon pairs emitted from a nonlinear crystal. Experimentally, a proof-of-principle experiment has been performed through multiplexing three OAM modes. We achieve a 47$%$ enhancement in single photon rate. A second-order autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)<0.5$ ensures our multiplexed heralded single photons with good single photon purity. We further indicate that an OAM-multiplexed HSPS with high quality can be constructed by generating higher dimensional entangled state and sorting them with high efficiency in OAM space. Our avenue may approach a good HSPS with the deterministic property.
