In our work, we study the dynamics of a single excitation in an one-dimensional array of two-level systems, which are chirally coupled through a single mode waveguide. The chirality is achieved owing to a strong optical spin-locking effect, which in an ideal case gives perfect unidirectional excitation transport. We obtain a simple analytical solution for a single excitation dynamics in the Markovian limit, which directly shows the tolerance of the system with respect to the fluctuations of emitters position. We also show that the Dicke state, which is well-known to be superradiant, has twice lower emission rate in the case of unidirectional quantum interaction. Our model is supported and verified with the numerical computations of quantum emmiters coupled via surface plasmon modes in a metalic nanowire. The obtained results are based on a very general model and can be applied to any chirally coupled system, that gives a new outlook on quantum transport in chiral nanophotonics.

This review describes an emerging field of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (WQED) studying interaction of photons propagating in a waveguide with localized quantum emitters. In such systems, atoms and guided photons are hybridized with each other a nd form polaritons that can propagate along the waveguide, contrary to the cavity quantum optics setup. Emerging in such a system collective light-atom interactions result in super- and sub-radiant quantum states, that are promising for quantum information processing, and give rise to peculiar quantum correlations between photons. The review is aimed at both experimentalists and theoreticians from various fields of physics interested in the rapidly developing subject of WQED. We highlight recent groundbreaking experiments performed for different quantum platforms, including cold atoms, superconducting qubits, semiconductor quantum dots, quantum solid-state defects and at the same time provide a comprehensive introduction into various theoretical techniques to study atom-photon interactions in the waveguide.

The generalized Rabi model (gRM) with both one- and two-photon coupling terms has been successfully implemented in circuit quantum electrodynamics systems. In this paper, we examine theoretically multiphoton resonances in the gRM and derive their eff ective Hamiltonians. With different detunings in the system, we show that all three- to six-photon resonances can be achieved by involving two intermediate states. Furthermore, we study the interplay between multiphoton resonance and chiral transport of photon Fock states in a resonator junction with broken time-reversal symmetry. Depending on the qubit-photon interaction and photon-hopping amplitude, we find that the system can demonstrate different short-time dynamics.
This tutorial reviews the Holevo capacity limit as a universal tool to analyze the ultimate transmission rates in a variety of optical communication scenarios, ranging from conventional optically amplified fiber links to free-space communication with power-limited optical signals. The canonical additive white Gaussian noise model is used to describe the propagation of the optical signal. The Holevo limit exceeds substantially the standard Shannon limit when the power spectral density of noise acquired in the course of propagation is small compared to the energy of a single photon at the carrier frequency per unit time-bandwidth area. General results are illustrated with a discussion of efficient communication strategies in the photon-starved regime.
White-light interferometry is one of todays most precise tools for determining optical material properties. Achievable precision and accuracy are typically limited by systematic errors due to a high number of interdependent data fitting parameters. H ere, we introduce spectrally-resolved quantum white-light interferometry as a novel tool for optical property measurements, notably chromatic dispersion in optical fibres. By exploiting both spectral and photon-number correlations of energy-time entangled photon pairs, the number of fitting parameters is significantly reduced which eliminates systematic errors and leads to an absolute determination of the material parameter. By comparing the quantum method to state-of-the-art approaches, we demonstrate the quantum advantage through 2.4 times better measurement precision, despite involving 62 times less photons. The improved results are due to conceptual advantages enabled by quantum optics which are likely to define new standards in experimental methods for characterising optical materials.
The ability to induce, observe and control quantum coherent interactions in room temperature, electrically driven optoelectronic devices is of outmost significance for advancing quantum science and engineering towards practical applications. We demon strate here a quantum interference phenomena, Ramsey fringes, in an inhomogeneously broadened InAs/InP quantum dot (QD) ensemble in the form of a 1.5 mm long optical amplifier operating at room temperature. Observation of Ramsey fringes in semiconductor QD was previously achieved only at cryogenic temperatures and only in isolated single dot systems. A high-resolution pump probe scheme where both pulses are characterized by cross frequency resolved optical gating (X-FROG) reveals a clear oscillatory behavior both in the amplitude and the instantaneous frequency of the probe pulse with a period that equals one optical cycle at operational wavelength. Using nominal input delays of 600 to 900 fs and scanning the separation around each delay in 1 fs steps, we map the evolution of the material de-coherence and extract a coherence time. Moreover we notice a unique phenomenon, which can not be observed in single dot systems, that the temporal position of the output probe pulse also oscillates with the same periodicity but with a quarter cycle delay relative to the intensity variations. This delay is the time domain manifestation of coupling between the real and imaginary parts of the complex susceptibility.
