We present briefly the first results obtained by the application of the KYNREFREV-reverberation model, which is ready for its use in XSPEC. This model computes the time dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to a flash of primary power-law radiation from a point source corona located on the axis of the black-hole accretion disc. The assumptions of the model are: central Kerr black hole, surrounded by a Keplerian, geometrically thin, optically thick, ionised disc with the possibility of defining the radial density profile and a stationary hot point-like patch of plasma located on the system rotation axis and emitting isotropic power-law radiation (lamp-post geometry). Full relativistic ray-tracing code in vacuum is used for photon paths from the corona to the disc and to the observer and from the disc to the observer. The ionisation of the disc is set for each radius according to the amount of the incident primary flux and the density of the accretion disc. In this paper we comment on some preliminary results obtained through the analysis of X-ray reverberation time-lags from 1H 0707-495 and IRAS 13224-3809.

We present the first results obtained by the application of the KYNREFREV-reverberation model, which is ready for its use in XSPEC. This model computes the time dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to a flash of primary power-law ra diation from a point source corona located on the axis of the black hole accretion disc (lamp-post geometry). Full relativistic effects are taken into account. The ionisation of the disc is set for each radius according to the amount of the incident primary flux and the density of the accretion disc. We tested the model by fitting model predictions to the observed time-lag spectra of three Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (ARK 564, MCG-6-30-15 and 1H 0707-495), assuming either a rapidly or zero spinning black hole (BH). The time-lags strongly suggest a compact X-ray source, located close to the BH, at a height of approx. 4 gravitational radii. This result does not depend either on the BH spin or the disc ionization. There is no significant statistical difference between the quality of the best-fits in the rapidly and zero spinning BH scenarios in Ark 564 and MCG-6-30-15. But there is an indication that the hypothesis of a non-rotating BH in 1H 0707-495 is not consistent with its time-lag spectrum. Finally, the best-fits to the Ark 564 and 1H 0707-495 data are of rather low quality. We detect wavy-residuals around the best-fit reverberation model time-lags at high frequencies. This result suggests that the simple lamp-post geometry does not fully explain the X-ray source/disc configuration in Active Galactic Nuclei.
We present the first X-ray reverberation mass measurement of a stellar-mass black hole. Accreting stellar-mass and supermassive black holes display characteristic spectral features resulting from reprocessing of hard X-rays by the accretion disc, suc h as an Fe K$alpha$ line and a Compton hump. This emission probes of the innermost region of the accretion disc through general relativistic distortions to the line profile. However, these spectral distortions are insensitive to black hole mass, since they depend on disc geometry in units of gravitational radii. Measuring the reverberation lag resulting from the difference in path length between direct and reflected emission calibrates the absolute length of the gravitational radius. We use a relativistic model able to reproduce the behaviour of the lags as a function of energy for a wide range of variability timescales, addressing both the reverberation lags on short timescales and the intrinsic hard lags on longer timescales. We jointly fit the time-averaged spectrum and the real and imaginary parts of the cross-spectrum as a function of energy for a range of Fourier frequencies to Rossi X-ray Timing Exporer data from the X-ray binary Cygnus X-1. We also show that introducing a self-consistently calculated radial ionisation profile in the disc improves the fit, but requires us to impose an upper limit on ionisation profile peak to allow a plausible value of the accretion disc density. This limit leads to a mass value more consistent with the existing dynamical measurement.
Using simultaneous optical (VLT/FORS2) and X-ray (XMM-Newton) data of NGC 5408, we present the first ever attempt to search for a reverberation signal in an ultraluminous X-ray source (NGC 5408 X-1). The idea is similar to AGN broad line reverberatio n mapping where a lag measurement between the X-ray and the optical flux combined with a Keplerian velocity estimate should enable us to weigh the central compact object. We find that although NGC 5408 X-1s X-rays are variable on a timescale of a few hundred seconds (RMS of 9.0$pm$0.5%), the optical emission does not show any statistically significant variations. We set a 3$sigma$ upper limit on the RMS optical variability of 3.3%. The ratio of the X-ray to the optical variability is an indicator of X-ray reprocessing efficiency. In X-ray binaries, this ratio is roughly 5. Assuming a similar ratio for NGC 5408 X-1, the expected RMS optical variability is $approx$2% which is still a factor of roughly two lower than what was possible with the VLT observations in this study. We find marginal evidence (3$sigma$) for optical variability on a $sim$ 24 hour timescale. Our results demonstrate that such measurements can be made, but photometric conditions, low sky background levels and longer simultaneous observations will be required to reach the optical variability levels similar to X-ray binaries.

Reverberation from scattering material around the black hole in active galactic nuclei is expected to produce a characteristic signature in a Fourier analysis of the time delays between directly-viewed continuum emission and the scattered light. Narr ow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) are highly variable at X-ray energies, and are ideal candidates for the detection of X-ray reverberation. We show new analysis of a small sample of NLS1 that clearly shows the expected time-delay signature, providing strong evidence for the existence of a high covering fraction of scattering and absorbing material a few tens to hundreds of gravitational radii from the black hole. We also show that an alternative interpretation of time delays in the NLS1 1H0707-495, as arising about one gravitational radius from the black hole, is strongly disfavoured in an analysis of the energy-dependence of the time delays.
The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H0707-495 has previously been identified as showing time lags between flux variations in the soft- (0.3-1 keV) and medium-energy (1-4 keV) X-ray bands that oscillate between positive and negative values as a function of the frequency of the mode of variation. Here we measure and analyse the lags also between a harder X-ray band (4-7.5 keV) and the soft and medium bands, using existing XMM-Newton data, and demonstrate that the entire spectrum of lags, considering both the full energy range, 0.3-7.5 keV, and the full frequency range, 10^-5 < nu < 10^-2 Hz, are inconsistent with previous claims of arising as reverberation associated with the inner accretion disk. Instead we demonstrate that a simple reverberation model, in which scattering or reflection is present in all X-ray bands, explains the full set of lags without requiring any ad hoc explanation for the time lag sign changes. The range of time delays required to explain the observed lags extends up to about 1800 s in the hard band. The results are consistent with reverberation caused by scattering of X-rays passing through an absorbing medium whose opacity decreases with increasing energy and that partially-covers the source. A high covering factor of absorbing and scattering circumnuclear material is inferred.
