We present a new method of constructing a fully robust qubit in a three-level system. By the application of continuous driving fields, robustness to both external and controller noise is achieved. Specifically, magnetic noise and power fluctuations do not operate within the robust qubit subspace. Whereas all the continuous driving based constructions of such a fully robust qubit considered so far have required at least four levels, we show that in fact only three levels are necessary. This paves the way for simple constructions of a fully robust qubit in many atomic and solid state systems that are controlled by either microwave or optical fields. We focus on the NV-center in diamond and analyze the implementation of the scheme, by utilizing the electronic spin sub-levels of its ground state. In current state-of-the-art experimental setups the scheme leads to improvement of more than two orders of magnitude in coherence time, pushing it towards the lifetime limit. We show how the fully robust qubit can be used to implement quantum sensing, and in particular, the sensing of high frequency signals.

Composite pulses are an efficient tool for robust quantum control. In this work, we derive the form of the composite pulse sequence to implement robust single-qubit gates in a three-level system, where two low-energy levels act as a qubit. The compos ite pulses can efficiently cancel the systematic errors up to a certain order. We find that the three-pulse sequence cannot completely eliminate the first order of systematic errors, but still availably makes the fidelity resistant to variations in a specific direction. When employing more pulses in the sequence ($N>3$), the fidelity can be insensitive to the variations in all directions and the robustness region becomes much wider. Finally we demonstrate the applications of composite pulses in quantum information processing, e.g., robust quantum information transfer between two qubits.
We explore the coherent control of nonlinear absorption of intense laser fields in four-level atomic systems. For instance, in a four-level ladder system, a coupling field creates electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with Aulter-Townes doub let for the probe field while the control field is absent. A large absorption peak appears at resonance as the control field is switched on. We show how such a large absorption leads to optical switching. Further, this large absorption gets diminished and a transparency window appears due to the saturation effects as the strength of the probe field is increased. We further demonstrate that the threshold of the optical bistability can be modified by suitable choices of the coupling and the control fields. In a four-level Y-type configuration, the effect of the control field on saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) is highlighted in the context of nonlinear absorption of the probe field. We achieve RSA and SA in a simple atomic system just by applying a control field.
We study quantum information properties of a seven-level system realized by a particle in an one-dimensional square-well trap. Features of encodings of seven-level systems in a form of three-qubit or qubit-qutrit systems are discussed. We use the thr ee-qubit encoding of the system in order to investigate subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for the thermal state of the particle. The qubit-qutrit encoding is employed to suggest a single qudit algorithm for calculation of parity of a bit string. Obtained results indicate on the potential resource of multilevel systems for realization of quantum information processing.

High-precision manipulation of multi-qubit quantum systems requires strictly clocked and synchronized multi-channel control signals. However, practical Arbitrary Waveform Generators (AWGs) always suffer from random signal jitters and channel latencie s that induces non-ignorable state or gate operation errors. In this paper, we analyze the average gate error caused by clock noises, from which an estimation formula is derived for quantifying the control robustness against clock noises. This measure is then employed for finding robust controls via a homotopic optimization algorithm. We also introduce our recently proposed stochastic optimization algorithm, b-GRAPE, for training robust controls via randomly generated clock noise samples. Numerical simulations on a two-qubit example demonstrate that both algorithms can greatly improve the control robustness against clock noises. The homotopic algorithm converges much faster than the b-GRAPE algorithm, but the latter can achieve more robust controls against clock noises.

We investigate dynamics of atomic and molecular systems exposed to intense, shaped chaotic fields and a weak femtosecond laser pulse theoretically. As a prototype example, the photoionization of a hydrogen atom is considered in detail. The net photoi onization undergoes an optimal enhancement when a broadband chaotic field is added to the weak laser pulse. The enhanced ionization is analyzed using time-resolved wavepacket evolution and the population dynamics of the atomic levels. We elucidate the enhancement produced by spectrally-shaped chaotic fields of two different classes, one with a tunable bandwidth and another with a narrow bandwidth centered at the first atomic transition. Motivated by the large bandwidth provided in the high harmonic generation, we also demonstrate the enhancement effect exploiting chaotic fields synthesized from discrete, phase randomized, odd-order and all-order high harmonics of the driving pulse. These findings are generic and can have applications to other atomic and simple molecular systems.
