We explore critical properties of two-dimensional lattices of spins interacting via an anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian and subject to incoherent spin flips. We determine the steady-state solution of the master equation for the density matrix via the corner-space renormalization method. We investigate the finite-size scaling and critical exponent of the magnetic linear susceptibility associated to a dissipative ferromagnetic transition. We show that the Von Neumann entropy increases across the critical point, revealing a strongly mixed character of the ferromagnetic phase. Entanglement is witnessed by the quantum Fisher information which exhibits a critical behavior at the transition point, showing that quantum correlations play a crucial role in the transition even though the system is in a mixed state.

As the temperature of a many-body system approaches absolute zero, thermal fluctuations of observables cease and quantum fluctuations dominate. Competition between different energies, such as kinetic energy, interactions or thermodynamic potentials, can induce a quantum phase transition between distinct ground states. Near a continuous quantum phase transition, the many-body system is quantum critical, exhibiting scale invariant and universal collective behavior cite{Coleman05Nat, Sachdev99QPT}. Quantum criticality has been actively pursued in the study of a broad range of novel materials cite{vdMarel03Nat, Lohneysen07rmp, G08NatPhys, Sachdev08NatPhys}, and can invoke new insights beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm of critical phenomena cite{Senthil04prb}. It remains a challenging task, however, to directly and quantitatively verify predictions of quantum criticality in a clean and controlled system. Here we report the observation of quantum critical behavior in a two-dimensional Bose gas in optical lattices near the vacuum-to-superfluid quantum phase transition. Based on textit{in situ} density measurements, we observe universal scaling of the equation of state at sufficiently low temperatures, locate the quantum critical point, and determine the critical exponents. The universal scaling laws also allow determination of thermodynamic observables. In particular, we observe a finite entropy per particle in the critical regime, which only weakly depends on the atomic interaction. Our experiment provides a prototypical method to study quantum criticality with ultracold atoms, and prepares the essential tools for further study on quantum critical dynamics.
We study dynamical properties of dissipative XYZ Heisenberg lattices where anisotropic spin-spin coupling competes with local incoherent spin flip processes. In particular, we explore a region of the parameter space where dissipative magnetic phase t ransitions for the steady state have been recently predicted by mean-field theories and exact numerical methods. We investigate the asymptotic decay rate towards the steady state both in 1D (up to the thermodynamical limit) and in finite-size 2D lattices, showing that critical dynamics does not occur in 1D, but it can emerge in 2D. We also analyze the behavior of individual homodyne quantum trajectories, which well reveal the nature of the transition.
We use the Gutzwiller Monte Carlo approach to simulate the dissipative XYZ-model in the vicinity of a dissipative phase transition. This approach captures classical spatial correlations together with the full on-site quantum behavior, while neglectin g non-local quantum effects. By considering finite two-dimensional lattices of various sizes, we identify a ferromagnetic and two paramagnetic phases, in agreement with earlier studies. The greatly reduced numerical complexity the Gutzwiller Monte Carlo approach facilitates efficient simulation of relatively large lattice sizes. The inclusion of the spatial correlations allows to describe critical behavior which is completely missed by the widely applied Gutzwiller decoupling of the density matrix.
Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis, the critical behavior of attractive rigid rods of length k (k-mers) on square lattices at intermediate density has been studied. A nematic phase, characterized by a big domain of paralle l k-mers, was found. This ordered phase is separated from the isotropic state by a continuous transition occurring at a intermediate density theta_c, which increases linearly with the magnitude of the lateral interactions.

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we report a study of the dynamics of two-dimensional vortex lattices driven over a disordered medium. In strong disorder, when topological order is lost, we show that the depinning transition is analogous to a se cond order critical transition: the velocity-force response at the onset of motion is continuous and characterized by critical exponents. Combining studies at zero and nonzero temperature and using a scaling analysis, two critical expo- nents are evaluated. We find vsim (F-F_c)^beta with beta=1.3pm0.1 at T=0 and F>F_c, and vsim T^{1/delta} with delta^{-1}=0.75pm0.1 at F=F_c, where F_c is the critical driving force at which the lattice goes from a pinned state to a sliding one. Both critical exponents and the scaling function are found to exhibit universality with regard to the pinning strength and different disorder realizations. Furthermore, the dynamics is shown to be chaotic in the whole critical region.
