We use the SDSS and WISE surveys to investigate the real nature of galaxies defined as LINERs in the BPT diagram. After establishing a mid-infrared colour W2-W3 = 2.5 as the optimal separator between galaxies with and without star formation, we investigate the loci of different galaxy classes in the W_{Ha} versus W2-W3 space. We find that: (1) A large fraction of LINER-like galaxies are emission-line retired galaxies, i.e galaxies which have stopped forming stars and are powered by hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES). Their W2-W3 colours show no sign of star formation and their Ha equivalent widths, W_{Ha}, are consistent with ionization by their old stellar populations. (2) Another important fraction have W2-W3 indicative of star formation. This includes objects located in the supposedly `pure AGN zone of the BPT diagram. (3) A smaller fraction of LINER-like galaxies have no trace of star formation from W2-W3 and a high W_{Ha}, pointing to the presence of an AGN. (4) Finally, a few LINERs tagged as retired by their W_{Ha} but with W2-W3 values indicative of star formation are late-type galaxies whose SDSS spectra cover only the old `retired bulge. This reinforces the view that LINER-like galaxies are a mixed bag of objects involving different physical phenomena and observational effects thrusted into the same locus of the BPT diagram.

The dynamics of the surface and inner atmosphere of the red supergiant star Betelgeuse are the subject of numerous high angular resolution and spectroscopic studies. Here, we present three-telescope interferometric data obtained at 11.15 microns wave length with the Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI), that probe the stellar surface continuum. We find striking variability in the size, effective temperature, and degree of asymmetry of the star over the years 2006-2009. These results may indicate an evolving shell of optically thick material close to the stellar photosphere.
Reliably identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in dwarf galaxies is key to understanding black hole demographics at low masses and constraining models for black hole seed formation. Here we present Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of eleven dwarf galaxies that were chosen as AGN candidates using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared (mid-IR) color-color selection. Hubble Space Telescope images are also presented for ten of the galaxies. Based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy, six galaxies in our sample have optical evidence for hosting AGNs and five are classified as star-forming. We detect X-ray point sources with luminosities above that expected from X-ray binaries in the nuclei of five of the six galaxies with optical evidence of AGNs. However, the X-ray emission from these AGNs is generally much lower than expected based on AGN scaling relations with infrared and optical tracers. We do not find compelling evidence for AGNs in the five optically-selected star-forming galaxies despite having red mid-IR colors. Only two are detected in X-rays and their properties are consistent with stellar-mass X-ray binaries. Based on this multiwavelength study, we conclude that two-color mid-IR AGN diagnostics at the resolution of WISE cannot be used to reliably select AGNs in optically-star-forming dwarf galaxies. Future observations in the infrared with the James Webb Space Telescope offer a promising path forward.

(Abridged) Based on UV to X-ray and radio to UV flux ratios, some argue that low ionization emission line regions (LINERs) and low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) are a scaled-down version of their more luminous predecessors Seyfert galaxies. Others, based on the lack of X-ray short (hours) time-scale variability, the non-detection of an iron line at 6.4 keV, and the faint UV emission, suggest the truncation of the classical thin accretion disk in the inner regions of the AGN where a radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) structure forms. We investigate the LINER-Seyfert connection by studying the unabsorbed, AGN powered, LINER galaxy NGC 4278. We analyzed one XMM-Newton and seven Chandra X-ray observations of NGC 4278 spread over a three year period. We detected a flux increase by a factor of ~3 on a ~3 months time-scale and by a factor of 5 between the faintest and the brightest observation separated by ~3 years. During only the XMM-Newton observation, where the highest flux level is detected, we found a 10% flux increase on a ~1 hour time-scale. A combination of an absorbed power law (N(H)~10^20 cm^-2, Gamma~2.2) plus a thermal component (kT~0.6 keV) were able to fit the Chandra spectra. The XMM-Newton spectra, where the highest X-ray flux is detected, are well fitted with a single absorbed power-law. No Fe K(alpha) emission line is detected at 6.4 keV. We constructed SEDs based on simultaneous or quasi simultaneous observations and compared them to LINER, radio-loud, and radio-quiet quasar SEDs. We find that at a low X-ray flux the NGC 4278 SED resembles that of typical LINER sources where the radio to X-ray emission can be considered as originating from a jet and/or RIAF, whereas at a high X-ray flux, NGC 4278 SED is more like a low luminosity Seyfert SED. Consequently, NGC 4278 could exhibit both LINER and Seyfert nuclear activity depending on the strength of its X-ray emission.

We present the result of trawling through the WISE archive for data on classical and recurrent novae. The data show a variety of spectral energy distributions, including stellar photospheres, dust and probable line emission. During the mission WISE a lso detected some novae which erupted subsequent to the survey, providing information about the progenitor systems.
We study the properties of a sample of 3967 LINER galaxies selected from SDSS-DR7, respect to their proximity to galaxy groups. The host galaxies of LINER have been analysed and compared with a well defined control sample of 3841 non-LINER galaxies m atched in redshift, luminosity, colour, morphology, age and stellar mass content. We find no difference between LINER and control galaxies in terms of colour and age of stellar population as function of the virial mass and distance to the geometric centre of the group. However, we find that LINER are more likely to populate low density environments in spite of their morphology, which is typical of high density regions such as rich galaxy clusters. For rich (poor) galaxy groups, the occurrence of LINER is $sim$2 times lower (higher) than the occurrence of matched, non-LINER galaxies. Moreover, LINER hosts do not seem to follow the expected morphology-density relation in groups of high virial mass. The high frequency of LINERS in low density regions could be due to the combination of a sufficiently ample gas reservoir to power the low ionization emission and/or enhanced galaxy interaction rates benefiting the gas flow toward their central regions.
