The Rashba effect as an electrically tunable spin-orbit interaction is the base for a multitude of possible applications such as spin filters, spin transistors, and quantum computing using Majorana states in nanowires. Moreover, this interaction can determine the spin dephasing and antilocalization phenomena in two dimensions. However, the real space pattern of the Rashba parameter has never been probed, albeit it critically influences, e.g., the more robust spin transistors using the spin helix state and the otherwise forbidden electron backscattering in topologically protected channels. Here, we map this pattern down to nanometer length scales by measuring the spin splitting of the lowest Landau level using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. We reveal strong fluctuations correlated with the local electrostatic potential for an InSb inversion layer with a large Rashba coefficient (~1 eV{AA}). The novel type of Rashba field mapping enables a more comprehensive understanding of the critical fluctuations, which might be decisive towards robust semiconductor-based spintronic devices.

The local density of optical states governs an emitters lifetime and quantum yield through the Purcell effect. It can be modified by a surface plasmon electromagnetic field, but such a field has a spatial extension limited to a few hundreds of nanome ters, which complicates the use of optical methods to spatially probe the emitter-plasmon coupling. Here we show that a combination of electron-based imaging, spectroscopies and photon-based correlation spectroscopy enables measurement of the Purcell effect with nanometer and nanosecond spatio-temporal resolutions. Due to the large variability of radiative lifetimes of emitters embedded in nanoparticles with inhomogeneous sizes we relied on a statistical approach to unambiguously probe the coupling between nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV^0) in nanodiamonds and surface plasmons in silver nanocubes. We quantified the Purcell effect by measuring the NV^0 excited state lifetimes in a large number of either isolated nanodiamonds or nanodiamond-nanocube dimers and demonstrated a statistically significant lifetime reduction for dimers.

In 1984, Bychkov and Rashba introduced a simple form of spin-orbit coupling to explain certain peculiarities in the electron spin resonance of two-dimensional semiconductors. Over the past thirty years, similar ideas have been leading to a vast numbe r of predictions, discoveries, and innovative concepts far beyond semiconductors. The past decade has been particularly creative with the realizations of means to manipulate spin orientation by moving electrons in space, controlling electron trajectories using spin as a steering wheel, and with the discovery of new topological classes of materials. These developments reinvigorated the interest of physicists and materials scientists in the development of inversion asymmetric structures ranging from layered graphene-like materials to cold atoms. This review presents the most remarkable recent and ongoing realizations of Rashba physics in condensed matter and beyond.
The electric-field tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface shows potential applications in spintronic devices. However, different gate dependence of the coupling strength has been reported in experiments. On the theoretical side, it has been predicted that the largest Rashba effect appears at the crossing point of the $d_{xy}$ and $d_{xz,yz}$ bands. In this work, we study the tuneability of the Rashba effect in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 by means of back-gating. The Lifshitz transition was crossed multiple times by tuning the gate voltage so that the Fermi energy is tuned to approach or depart from the band crossing. By analyzing the weak antilocalization behavior in the magnetoresistance, we find that the maximum spin-orbit coupling effect occurs when the Fermi energy is near the Lifshitz point. Moreover, we find strong evidence for a single spin winding at the Fermi surface.
In this work, we theoretically study transverse magnetic focusing in a two-dimensional electron gas with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction when proximitized along its edge with a superconducting contact. The presence of superconducting correlation s leads to the emergence of chiral Andreev edge states which -- within this weak magnetic field regime -- may be pictured as states following semiclassical skipping orbits with alternating electron-hole nature. The spin-orbit induced splitting of the Fermi surface causes these carriers to move along cyclotron orbits with different radii, allowing for their spatial spin separation. When Andreev reflection takes place at the superconducting lead, scattered carriers flip both their charge and spin, generating distinguishable features in the transport properties of the device. In particular, we report a notable enhancement of the separation between the spin-split focal points, which scales linearly with the number of Andreev scattering events at the anomalous terminal. We support our results by calculating conductance maps to arbitrary points in the sample that provide a complete image of the ballistic electron-hole cyclotron paths.
We use $vec{k}cdotvec{p}$ theory to estimate the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in large semiconductor nanowires. We specifically investigate GaAs- and InSb-based devices with different gate configurations to control symmetry and localization of th e electron charge density. We explore gate-controlled SOC for wires of different size and doping, and we show that in high carrier density SOC has a non-linear electric field susceptibility, due to large reshaping of the quantum states. We analyze recent experiments with InSb nanowires in light of our calculations. Good agreement is found with SOC coefficients reported in Phys. Rev.B 91, 201413(R) (2015), but not with the much larger values reported in Nat Commun., 8, 478 (2017). We discuss possible origins of this discrepancy.
