We demonstrate the violation of an EPR steering inequality developed for single photon path entanglement with displacement-based detection. We use a high-rate source of heralded single-photon path-entangled states, combined with high-efficiency superconducting-based detectors, in a scheme that is free of any post-selection and thus immune to the detection loophole. This result conclusively demonstrates single-photon entanglement in a one-sided device-independent scenario, and opens the way towards implementations of device-independent quantum technologies within the paradigm of path entanglement.

How can a multipartite single-photon path-entangled state be certified efficiently by means of local measurements? We address this question by constructing an entanglement witness based on local photon detections preceded by displacement operations t o reveal genuine multipartite entanglement. Our witness is defined as a sum of two observables that can be measured locally and assessed with two measurement settings for any number of parties $N$. For any bipartition, the maximum mean value of the witness observable over biseparable states is bounded from the maximal eigenvalue of an $Ntimes N$ matrix, which can be computed efficiently. We demonstrate the applicability of our scheme by experimentally testing the witness for heralded 4- and 8-partite single-photon path-entangled states. Our implementation shows the scalability of our witness and opens the door for distributing photonic multipartite entanglement in quantum networks at high rates.

A single photon incident on a beam splitter produces an entangled field state, and in principle could be used to violate a Bell-inequality, but such an experiment (without post-selection) is beyond the reach of current experiments. Here we consider t he somewhat simpler task of demonstrating EPR-steering with a single photon (also without post-selection). That is, of demonstrating that Alices choice of measurement on her half of a single photon can affect the other half of the photon in Bobs lab, in a sense rigorously defined by us and Doherty [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 140402 (2007)]. Previous work by Lvovsky and co-workers [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 047903 (2004)] has addressed this phenomenon (which they called remote preparation) experimentally using homodyne measurements on a single photon. Here we show that, unfortunately, their experimental parameters do not meet the bounds necessary for a rigorous demonstration of EPR-steering with a single photon. However, we also show that modest improvements in the experimental parameters, and the addition of photon counting to the arsenal of Alices measurements, would be sufficient to allow such a demonstration.
The generation and manipulation of strong entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering in macroscopic systems are outstanding challenges in modern physics. Especially, the observation of asymmetric EPR steering is important for both its fu ndamental role in interpreting the nature of quantum mechanics and its application as resource for the tasks where the levels of trust at different parties are highly asymmetric. Here, we study the entanglement and EPR steering between two macroscopic magnons in a hybrid ferrimagnet-light system. In the absence of light, the two types of magnons on the two sublattices can be entangled, but no quantum steering occurs when they are damped with the same rates. In the presence of the cavity field, the entanglement can be significantly enhanced, and strong two-way asymmetric quantum steering appears between two magnons with equal dispassion. This is very different from the conventional protocols to produce asymmetric steering by imposing additional unbalanced losses or noises on the two parties at the cost of reducing steerability. The essential physics is well understood by the unbalanced population of acoustic and optical magnons under the cooling effect of cavity photons. Our finding may provide a novel platform to manipulate the quantum steering and the detection of bi-party steering provides a knob to probe the magnetic damping on each sublattice of a magnet.
We report the experimental realization of heralded distribution of single-photon path entanglement at telecommunication wavelengths in a repeater-like architecture. The entanglement is established upon detection of a single photon, originating from o ne of two spontaneous parametric down conversion photon pair sources, after erasing the photons which-path information. In order to certify the entanglement, we use an entanglement witness which does not rely on post-selection. We herald entanglement between two locations, separated by a total distance of 2 km of optical fiber, at a rate of 1.6 kHz. This work paves the way towards high-rate and practical quantum repeater architectures.
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is known to be a key resource for one-sided device-independent quantum information protocols. Here we demonstrate steering using hybrid entanglement between continuous- and discrete-variable optical qubits. To this en d, we report on suitable steering inequalities and detail the implementation and requirements for this demonstration. Steering is experimentally certified by observing a violation by more than 5 standard deviations. Our results illustrate the potential of optical hybrid entanglement for applications in heterogeneous quantum networks that would interconnect disparate physical platforms and encodings.
