By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the complete phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, where two out of three bonds have super-exchange couplings $J$ and the third one has instead $J^prime$. This model interpolates between the square lattice and the isotropic triangular one, for $J^prime/J le 1$, and between the isotropic triangular lattice and a set of decoupled chains, for $J/J^prime le 1$. We consider all the fully-symmetric spin liquids that can be constructed with the fermionic projective-symmetry group classification [Y. Zhou and X.-G. Wen, arXiv:cond-mat/0210662] and we compare them with the spiral magnetic orders that can be accommodated on finite clusters. Our results show that, for $J^prime/J le 1$, the phase diagram is dominated by magnetic orderings, even though a spin-liquid state may be possible in a small parameter window, i.e., $0.7 lesssim J^prime/J lesssim 0.8$. In contrast, for $J/J^prime le 1$, a large spin-liquid region appears close to the limit of decoupled chains, i.e., for $J/J^prime lesssim 0.6$, while magnetically ordered phases with spiral order are stabilized close to the isotropic point.

We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the antiferromagnetic first ($J_1$) and second ($J_2$) nearest-neighbor interactions using density matrix renormalization group. By studying the spin correlation function, we fin d a $120^{circ}$ magnetic order phase for $J_2 lesssim 0.07 J_1$ and a stripe antiferromagnetic phase for $J_2 gtrsim 0.15 J_1$. Between these two phases, we identify a spin liquid region characterized by the exponential decaying spin and dimer correlations, as well as the large spin singlet and triplet excitation gaps on finite-size systems. We find two near degenerating ground states with distinct properties in two sectors, which indicates more than one spin liquid candidates in this region. While the sector with spinon is found to respect the time reversal symmetry, the even sector without a spinon breaks such a symmetry for finite-size systems. Furthermore, we detect the signature of the fractionalization by following the evolution of different ground states with inserting spin flux into the cylinder system. Moreover, by tuning the anisotropic bond coupling, we explore the nature of the spin liquid phase and find the optimal parameter region for the gapped $Z_2$ spin liquid.

Spin liquids occuring in 2D frustrated spin systems were initially assumed to appear at strongest frustration, but evidence grows that they more likely intervene at transitions between two different types of order. To identify if this is more general , we here analyze a generalization of the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice (SATL) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions, the spatially emph{completely} anisotropic triangular lattice (SCATL). Using Takahashis modified spin-wave theory, complemented by exact diagonalizations, we find indications that indeed different kinds of order are always separated by disordered phases. Our results further suggest that two gapped non-magnetic phases, identified as distinct in the SATL, are actually continuously connected via the additional anisotropy of the SCATL. Finally, measurements on several materials found magnetic long-range order where calculations on the SATL predict disordered behavior. Our results suggest a simple explanation through the additional anisotropy of the SCATL, which locates the corresponding parameter values in ordered phases. The studied model might therefore not only yield fundamental insight into quantum disordered phases, but should also be relevant for experiments on the quest for spin liquids.

Motivated by the recent experiment on a rare-earth material YbMgGaO$_4$ [Y. Li textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. textbf{115}, 167203 (2015)], which found that the ground state of YbMgGaO$_4$ is a quantum spin liquid, we study the ground-state phase di agram of an anisotropic spin-$1/2$ model that was proposed to describe YbMgGaO$_4$. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method in combination with the exact diagonalization, we calculate a variety of physical quantities, including the ground-state energy, the fidelity, the entanglement entropy and spin-spin correlation functions. Our studies show that in the quantum phase diagram there is a $120^{circ}$ phase and two distinct stripe phases. The transitions from the two stripe phases to the $120^{circ}$ phase are of the first order. However, the transition between the two stripe phases is not the first order, which is different from its classical counterpart. Additionally, we find no evidence for a quantum spin liquid in this model. Our results suggest that additional terms may be also important to model the material YbMgGaO$_4$. These findings will stimulate further experimental and theoretical works in understanding the quantum spin liquid ground state in YbMgGaO$_4$.
Using variational wave functions and Monte Carlo techniques, we study the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with first-neighbor $J_1$ and second-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic couplings on the honeycomb lattice. We perform a systematic comparison of magnetically ordered and nonmagnetic states (spin liquids and valence-bond solids) to obtain the ground-state phase diagram. Neel order is stabilized for small values of the frustrating second-neighbor coupling. Increasing the ratio $J_2/J_1$, we find strong evidence for a continuous transition to a nonmagnetic phase at $J_2/J_1 approx 0.23$. Close to the transition point, the Gutzwiller-projected uniform resonating valence bond state gives an excellent approximation to the exact ground-state energy. For $0.23 lesssim J_2/J_1 lesssim 0.4$, a gapless $Z_2$ spin liquid with Dirac nodes competes with a plaquette valence-bond solid. In contrast, the gapped spin liquid considered in previous works has significantly higher variational energy. Although the plaquette valence-bond order is expected to be present as soon as the Neel order melts, this ordered state becomes clearly favored only for $J_2/J_1 gtrsim 0.3$. Finally, for $0.36 lesssim J_2/J_1 le 0.5$, a valence-bond solid with columnar order takes over as the ground state, being also lower in energy than the magnetic state with collinear order. We perform a detailed finite-size scaling and standard data collapse analysis, and we discuss the possibility of a deconfined quantum critical point separating the Neel antiferromagnet from the plaquette valence-bond solid.
We present new numerical tools to analyze symmetry-broken phases in the context of $SU(2)$-symmetric translation-invariant matrix product states (MPS) and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) methods for infinite cylinders, and determine the p hase diagram of the geometrically-frustrated triangular Heisenberg model with nearest and next-nearest neighbor (NN and NNN) interactions. The appearance of Nambu-Goldstone modes in the excitation spectrum is characterized by tower of states levels in the momentum-resolved entanglement spectrum. Symmetry-breaking phase transitions are detected by a combination of the correlation lengths and second and fourth cumulants of the magnetic order parameters (which we call the Binder ratio), even though symmetry implies that the order parameter itself is strictly zero. Using this approach, we have identified $120^{circ}$ order, a columnar order, and an algebraic spin liquid (specific to width-6 systems), alongside the previously studied topological spin liquid phase. For the latter, we also demonstrate robustness against chiral perturbations.
