In this paper, we describe the system for generating textual descriptions of short video clips using recurrent neural networks (RNN), which we used while participating in the Large Scale Movie Description Challenge 2015 in ICCV 2015. Our work builds on static image captioning systems with RNN based language models and extends this framework to videos utilizing both static image features and video-specific features. In addition, we study the usefulness of visual content classifiers as a source of additional information for caption generation. With experimental results we show that utilizing keyframe based features, dense trajectory video features and content classifier outputs together gives better performance than any one of them individually.

This paper introduces the system we developed for the Google Cloud & YouTube-8M Video Understanding Challenge, which can be considered as a multi-label classification problem defined on top of the large scale YouTube-8M Dataset. We employ a large set of techniques to aggregate the provided frame-level feature representations and generate video-level predictions, including several variants of recurrent neural networks (RNN) and generalized VLAD. We also adopt several fusion strategies to explore the complementarity among the models. In terms of the official metric GAP@20 (global average precision at 20), our best fusion model attains 0.84198 on the public 50% of test data and 0.84193 on the private 50% of test data, ranking 4th out of 650 teams worldwide in the competition.
Typical video classification methods often divide a video into short clips, do inference on each clip independently, then aggregate the clip-level predictions to generate the video-level results. However, processing visually similar clips independent ly ignores the temporal structure of the video sequence, and increases the computational cost at inference time. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named FASTER, i.e., Feature Aggregation for Spatio-TEmporal Redundancy. FASTER aims to leverage the redundancy between neighboring clips and reduce the computational cost by learning to aggregate the predictions from models of different complexities. The FASTER framework can integrate high quality representations from expensive models to capture subtle motion information and lightweight representations from cheap models to cover scene changes in the video. A new recurrent network (i.e., FAST-GRU) is designed to aggregate the mixture of different representations. Compared with existing approaches, FASTER can reduce the FLOPs by over 10x? while maintaining the state-of-the-art accuracy across popular datasets, such as Kinetics, UCF-101 and HMDB-51.
This report describes our solution for the VATEX Captioning Challenge 2020, which requires generating descriptions for the videos in both English and Chinese languages. We identified three crucial factors that improve the performance, namely: multi-v iew features, hybrid reward, and diverse ensemble. Based on our method of VATEX 2019 challenge, we achieved significant improvements this year with more advanced model architectures, combination of appearance and motion features, and careful hyper-parameters tuning. Our method achieves very competitive results on both of the Chinese and English video captioning tracks.
We present our submission to the Microsoft Video to Language Challenge of generating short captions describing videos in the challenge dataset. Our model is based on the encoder--decoder pipeline, popular in image and video captioning systems. We pro pose to utilize two different kinds of video features, one to capture the video content in terms of objects and attributes, and the other to capture the motion and action information. Using these diverse features we train models specializing in two separate input sub-domains. We then train an evaluator model which is used to pick the best caption from the pool of candidates generated by these domain expert models. We argue that this approach is better suited for the current video captioning task, compared to using a single model, due to the diversity in the dataset. Efficacy of our method is proven by the fact that it was rated best in MSR Video to Language Challenge, as per human evaluation. Additionally, we were ranked second in the automatic evaluation metrics based table.
The Recurrent Neural Networks and their variants have shown promising performances in sequence modeling tasks such as Natural Language Processing. These models, however, turn out to be impractical and difficult to train when exposed to very high-dime nsional inputs due to the large input-to-hidden weight matrix. This may have prevented RNNs large-scale application in tasks that involve very high input dimensions such as video modeling; current approaches reduce the input dimensions using various feature extractors. To address this challenge, we propose a new, more general and efficient approach by factorizing the input-to-hidden weight matrix using Tensor-Train decomposition which is trained simultaneously with the weights themselves. We test our model on classification tasks using multiple real-world video datasets and achieve competitive performances with state-of-the-art models, even though our model architecture is orders of magnitude less complex. We believe that the proposed approach provides a novel and fundamental building block for modeling high-dimensional sequential data with RNN architectures and opens up many possibilities to transfer the expressive and advanced architectures from other domains such as NLP to modeling high-dimensional sequential data.
