We performed a detailed analysis of the use of [C/N] measured in red giant branch stars between the completion of the first dredge up and the red giant branch bump ([C/N]_{FDU}) as age indicator. [C/N]_{FDU} cannot give accurate ages for individual stars, but may provide a general chronology for the formation of composite populations and add constraints to analyses of red giants from surface gravity-effective temperature diagrams. We provide a theoretical calibration of [C/N]_{FDU} in terms of total metallicity [M/H] and age, for ages greater than 1 Gyr, which we tested against variations in the initial heavy element distribution (scaled-solar vs alpha-enhanced), efficiency of overshooting from MS convective cores and from the convective envelopes, variations in the initial He abundance and in the mixing length parameter. Our calibration is compared with a small sample of available measurements of [C/N]_{FDU} in star clusters and halo field stars, which at least qualitatively confirm the overall trend of the predicted [C/N]_{FDU} with age and [M/H]. The use of [C/N]_{FDU}-[M/H]-age relations obtained from independent sets of stellar evolution calculations cause age differences (for a given [C/N]_{FDU} and [M/H] pair) up to about 2~Gyr. More accurate spectroscopic measurements of [C/N]_{FDU} in star clusters with well-established ages and metallicities are required to better test theoretical calibrations of this age indicator.

Post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars are known to be chemically diverse. In this paper we present the first observational evidence of a star that has failed the third dredge-up (TDU). J005252.87-722842.9 is a A-type ($T_{rm eff}$ = 8250 $pm$ 250K) luminous (8200 $pm$ 700 $rm L_{odot}$), metal-poor ($textrm{[Fe/H]}$ = $- 1.18 pm$ 0.10), low-mass (M$_{rm initial}$ $approx$ 1.5 $-$ 2.0 $rm M_{odot}$) post-AGB star in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Through a systematic abundance study, using high-resolution optical spectra from UVES, we found that this likely post-AGB object shows an intriguing photospheric composition with no confirmed carbon-enhancement (upper limit of [C/Fe] $<$ 0.50) nor enrichment of $s$-process elements. We derived an oxygen abundance of [O/Fe] = 0.29 $pm$ 0.1. For Fe and O, we took into account the effects of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE). We could not derive an upper limit for the nitrogen abundance as there are no useful nitrogen lines within our spectral coverage. The chemical pattern displayed by this object has not been observed in single or binary post-AGBs. Based on its derived stellar parameters and inferred evolutionary state, single star nucleosynthesis models predict that this star should have undergone TDU episodes while on the AGB and be carbon-enriched. However, our observations are in contrast with these predictions. We identify two possible Galactic analogues which are likely to be post-AGB stars, but the lack of accurate distances (hence luminosities) to these objects does not allow us to confirm their post-AGB status. If they have low luminosities then they are likely to be dusty post-RGB stars. The discovery of J005252.87-722842.9 reveals a new stellar evolutionary channel whereby a star evolves without any third dredge-up episodes.
The X-ray spectra of late type stars can generally be well fitted by a two temperature component model of the corona. We fnd that the temperature of both components are strong functions of stellar age, although the temperature of the hotter plasma in the corona shows a larger scatter and is probably affected by the activity of stars, such as flares. We confirm the power-law decay of the temperature of the hot plasma, but the temperature of the cool component decays linearly with log (age).

We revisit the problem of the formation of DB white dwarfs, as well as the origin of hydrogen in DBA stars, using a new set of envelope model calculations with stratified and mixed hydrogen/helium compositions. We first describe an approximate model to simulate the so-called convective dilution process, where a thin, superficial hydrogen radiative layer is gradually eroded by the underlying and more massive convective helium envelope, thus transforming a DA white dwarf into a DB star. We show that this convective dilution process is able to account for the large increase in the number of DB white dwarfs below Teff ~ 20,000 K, but that the residual hydrogen abundances expected from this process are still orders of magnitude lower than those observed in DBA white dwarfs. Scenarios involving the accretion of hydrogen from the interstellar medium or other external bodies have often been invoked to explain these overabundances of hydrogen. In this paper, we describe a new paradigm where hydrogen, initially diluted within the thick stellar envelope, is still present and slowly diffusing upward in the deeper layers of a Teff ~ 20,000 K white dwarf. When the convective dilution process occurs, the bottom of the mixed H/He convection zone sinks deep into the star, resulting in large amounts of hydrogen being dredged-up to the stellar surface, a phenomenon similar to that invoked in the context of DQ white dwarfs.

We present a new theoretical calibration of the Stroemgren metallicity index hk by using alpha-enhanced evolutionary models transformed into the observational plane by using atmosphere models with the same chemical mixture. We apply the new Metallici ty--Index--Color (MIC) relations to a sample of 85 field red giants (RGs) and find that the difference between photometric estimates and spectroscopic measurements is on average smaller than 0.1 dex with a dispersion of sigma = 0.19 dex. The outcome is the same if we apply the MIC relations to a sample of eight RGs in the bulge globular cluster NGC6522, but the standard deviation ranges from 0.26 (hk, v-y) to 0.49 (hk, u-y). The difference is mainly caused by a difference in photometric accuracy. The new MIC relations based on the (Ca-y) color provide metallicities systematically more metal-rich than the spectroscopic ones. We found that the Ca-band is affected by Ca abundance and possibly by chromospheric activity.
We present the results of an investigation of the dredge-up and mixing during the merger of two white dwarfs with different chemical compositions by conducting hydrodynamic simulations of binary mergers for three representative mass ratios. In all th e simulations, the total mass of the two white dwarfs is $lesssim1.0~{rm M_odot}$. Mergers involving a CO and a He white dwarf have been suggested as a possible formation channel for R Coronae Borealis type stars, and we are interested in testing if such mergers lead to conditions and outcomes in agreement with observations. Even if the conditions during the merger and subsequent nucleosynthesis favor the production of $^{18}{mathrm O}$, the merger must avoid dredging up large amounts of $^{16}{mathrm O}$, or else it will be difficult to produce sufficient $^{18}{mathrm O}$ to explain the oxygen ratio observed to be of order unity. We performed a total of 9 simulations using two different grid-based hydrodynamics codes using fixed and adaptive meshes, and one smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code. We find that in most of the simulations, $>10^{-2}~{rm M_odot}$ of $^{16}{mathrm O}$ is indeed dredged up during the merger. However, in SPH simulations where the accretor is a hybrid He/CO white dwarf with a $sim 0.1~{rm M_odot}$ layer of helium on top, we find that no $^{16}{mathrm O}$ is being dredged up, while in the $q=0.8$ simulation $<10^{-4}~{rm M_odot}$ of $^{16}{mathrm O}$ has been brought up, making a WD binary consisting of a hybrid CO/He WD and a companion He WD an excellent candidate for the progenitor of RCB stars.
