We report on studies of quantum turbulence with second-sound in superfluid 4He in which the turbulence is generated by the flow of the superfluid component through a wide square channel, the ends of which are plugged with sintered silver superleaks, the flow being generated by compression of a bellows. The superleaks ensure that there is no net flow of the normal fluid. In an earlier paper (Phys. Rev. B, 86, 134515 (2012)) we have shown that steady flow of this kind generates a density of vortex lines that is essentially identical with that generated by thermal counterflow, when the average relative velocity between the two fluids is the same. In this paper we report on studies of the temporal decay of the vortex-line density, observed when the bellows is stopped, and we compare the results with those obtained from the temporal decay of thermal counterflow re-measured in the same channel and under the same conditions. In both cases here is an initial fast decay which, for low enough initial line density approaches for a short time the form $t^{-1}$ characteristic of the decay of a random vortex tangle. This is followed at late times by a slower $t^{-3/2}$ decay, characteristic of the decay of large quasi-classical eddies. However, in the range of investigated parameters, we observe always in the case of thermal counterflow, and only in a few cases of high steady-state velocity in superflow, an intermediate regime in which the decay either does not proceed monotonically with time or passes through a point of inflexion. This difference, established firmly by our experiments, might represent one essential ingredient for the full theoretical understanding of counterflow turbulence.

We have studied the interaction of metastable $^4$He$_2^*$ excimer molecules with quantized vortices in superfluid $^4$He in the zero temperature limit. The vortices were generated by either rotation or ion injection. The trapping diameter of the mol ecules on quantized vortices was found to be $96pm6$,nm at a pressure of 0.1,bar and $27pm5$,nm at 5.0 bar. We have also demonstrated that a moving tangle of vortices can carry the molecules through the superfluid helium.
We describe measurements of the decay of pure superfluid turbulence in superfluid 3He-B, in the low temperature regime where the normal fluid density is negligible. We follow the decay of the turbulence generated by a vibrating grid as detected by vi brating wire resonators. Despite the absence of any classical normal fluid dissipation processes, the decay is consistent with turbulence having the classical Kolmogorov energy spectrum and is remarkably similar to that measured in superfluid 4He at relatively high temperatures. Further, our results strongly suggest that the decay is governed by the superfluid circulation quantum rather than kinematic viscosity.
The ground state of solid $^4$He is studied using the diffusion Monte Carlo method and a new trial wave function able to describe the supersolid. The new wave function is symmetric under the exchange of particles and reproduces the experimental equat ion of state. Results for the one-body density matrix show the existence of off-diagonal long-range order with a very small condensate fraction $sim 10^{-4}$. The superfluid density of the commensurate system is below our resolution threshold, $rho_s/rho < 10^{-5}$. With a 1% concentration of vacancies the superfluid density is manifestly larger, $rho_s/rho=3.2(1) cdot 10^{-3}$.
Turbulence in a superfluid in the zero temperature limit consists of a dynamic tangle of quantized vortex filaments. Different types of turbulence are possible depending on the level of correlations in the orientation of vortex lines. We provide an o verview of turbulence in superfluid $^4$He with a particular focus on recent experiments probing the decay of turbulence in the zero temperature regime below 0.5 K. We describe extensive measurements of the vortex line density during the free decay of different types of turbulence: ultraquantum and quasiclassical turbulence in both stationary and rotating containers. The observed decays and the effective dissipation as a function of temperature are compared with theoretical models and numerical simulations.

Recent studies of turbulence in superfluid Helium indicate that turbulence in quantum fluids obeys a Kolmogorov scaling law. Such a law was previously attributed to classical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations of motion. It is suggested that tu rbulence in all fluids is due to quantum fluid mechanical effects. Employing a field theoretical view of the fluid flow velocity, vorticity appears as quantum filamentary strings. This in turn leads directly to the Kolmogorov critical indices for the case of fully developed turbulence.
