An edge state is a time-harmonic solution of a conservative wave system, e.g. Schroedinger, Maxwell, which is propagating (plane-wave-like) parallel to, and localized transverse to, a line-defect or edge. Topologically protected edge states are edge states which are stable against spatially localized (even strong) deformations of the edge. First studied in the context of the quantum Hall effect, protected edge states have attracted huge interest due to their role in the field of topological insulators. Theoretical understanding of topological protection has mainly come from discrete (tight-binding) models and direct numerical simulation. In this paper we consider a rich family of continuum PDE models for which we rigorously study regimes where topologically protected edge states exist. Our model is a class of Schroedinger operators on $mathbb{R}^2$ with a background 2D honeycomb potential perturbed by an edge-potential. The edge potential is a domain-wall interpolation, transverse to a prescribed rational edge, between two distinct periodic structures. General conditions are given for the bifurcation of a branch of topologically protected edge states from Dirac points of the background honeycomb structure. The bifurcation is seeded by the zero mode of a 1D effective Dirac operator. A key condition is a spectral no-fold condition for the prescribed edge. We then use this result to prove the existence of topologically protected edge states along zigzag edges of certain honeycomb structures. Our results are consistent with the physics literature and appear to be the first rigorous results on the existence of topologically protected edge states for continuum 2D PDE systems describing waves in a non-trivial periodic medium. We also show that the family of Hamiltonians we study contains cases where zigzag edge states exist, but which are not topologically protected.

We prove that a spectral gap-filling phenomenon occurs whenever a Hamiltonian operator encounters a coarse index obstruction upon compression to a domain with boundary. Furthermore, the gap-filling spectra contribute to quantised current channels, wh ich follow and are localised at the possibly complicated boundary. This index obstruction is shown to be insensitive to deformations of the domain boundary, so the phenomenon is generic for magnetic Laplacians modelling quantum Hall systems and Chern topological insulators. A key construction is a quasi-equivariant version of Roes algebra of locally compact finite propagation operators.
The experimental study of edge states in atomically-thin layered materials remains a challenge due to the difficult control of the geometry of the sample terminations, the stability of dangling bonds and the need to measure local properties. In the c ase of graphene, localised edge modes have been predicted in zig-zag and bearded edges, characterised by flat dispersions connecting the Dirac points. Polaritons in semiconductor microcavities have recently emerged as an extraordinary photonic platform to emulate 1D and 2D Hamiltonians, allowing the direct visualization of the wavefunctions in both real- and momentum-space as well as of the energy dispersion of eigenstates via photoluminescence experiments. Here we report on the observation of edge states in a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars. The lowest two bands of this structure arise from the coupling of the lowest energy modes of the micropillars, and emulate the {pi} and {pi}* bands of graphene. We show the momentum space dispersion of the edge states associated to the zig-zag and bearded edges, holding unidimensional quasi-flat bands. Additionally, we evaluate polarisation effects characteristic of polaritons on the properties of these states.
We establish experimentally a photonic super-honeycomb lattice (sHCL) by use of a cw-laser writing technique, and thereby demonstrate two distinct flatband line states that manifest as noncontractible-loop-states in an infinite flatband lattice. Thes e localized states (straight and zigzag lines) observed in the sHCL with tailored boundaries cannot be obtained by superposition of conventional compact localized states because they represent a new topological entity in flatband systems. In fact, the zigzag-line states, unique to the sHCL, are in contradistinction with those previously observed in the Kagome and Lieb lattices. Their momentum-space spectrum emerges in the high-order Brillouin zone where the flat band touches the dispersive bands, revealing the characteristic of topologically protected bandcrossing. Our experimental results are corroborated by numerical simulations based on the coupled mode theory. This work may provide insight to Dirac like 2D materials beyond graphene.
By an integral equation approach to the time-harmonic classical Maxwell equations, we describe the dispersion in the nonretarded frequency regime of the edge plasmon-polariton (EPP) on a semi-infinite flat sheet. The sheet has an arbitrary, physicall y admissible, tensor valued and spatially homogeneous conductivity, and serves as a model for a family of two-dimensional conducting materials. We formulate a system of integral equations for the electric field tangential to the sheet in a homogeneous and isotropic ambient medium. We show how this system is simplified via a length scale separation. This view entails the quasi-electrostatic approximation, by which the tangential electric field is replaced by the gradient of a scalar potential, $varphi$. By the Wiener-Hopf method, we solve an integral equation for $varphi$ in some generality. The EPP dispersion relation comes from the elimination of a divergent limiting Fourier integral for $varphi$ at the edge. We connect the existence, or lack thereof, of the EPP dispersion relation to the index for Wiener-Hopf integral equations, an integer of topological character. We indicate that the values of this index may express an asymmetry due to the material anisotropy in the number of wave modes propagating on the sheet away from the edge with respect to the EPP direction of propagation. We discuss extensions such as the setting of two semi-infinite, coplanar sheets. Our theory forms a generalization of the treatment by Volkov and Mikhailov (1988 Sov. Phys. JETP 67 1639).

Transfer-matrix methods are used for a tight-binding description of electron transport in graphene-like geometries, in the presence of spin-orbit couplings. Application of finite-size scaling and phenomenological renormalization techniques shows that , for strong enough spin-orbit interactions and increasing on-site disorder, this system undergoes a metal-insulator transition characterized by the exponents $ u=2.71(8)$, $eta=0.174(2)$. We show how one can extract information regarding spin polarization decay with distance from an injection edge, from the evolution of wave-function amplitudes in the transfer-matrix approach. For (relatively weak) spin-orbit coupling intensity $mu$, we obtain that the characteristic length $Lambda_s$ for spin-polarization decay behaves as $Lambda_s propto mu^{-2}$.
