We report experimental evidence of strong orientational coupling between the crystal lattice and the vortex lattice in a weakly pinned Co-doped NbSe2 single crystal through direct imaging using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. At low fields, when the magnetic field is applied along the six-fold symmetric c-axis of the NbSe2 crystal, the equilibrium configuration of the vortex lattice is preferentially aligned along the basis vectors of the crystal lattice. The orientational coupling between the vortex lattice and crystal lattice becomes more pronounced as the magnetic field is increased. We show that this coupling enhances the stability of the orientational order of the vortex lattice, which persists even in the disordered state at high fields where dislocations and disclinations have destroyed the topological order.

The vortex lattice in a Type II superconductor provides a versatile model system to investigate the order-disorder transition in a periodic medium in the presence of random pinning. Here, using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in a weakly pinned Co0. 0075NbSe2 single crystal, we show that at low temperatures, the vortex lattice in a 3-dimensional superconductor disorders in two steps across the peak effect. At the onset of the peak effect, the equilibrium Bragg glass transforms into an orientational glass through the proliferation of dislocations. At a higher field, the dislocations dissociate into isolated disclination giving rise to an amorphous vortex glass. We also show the existence of a variety of additional non-equilibrium metastable states, which can be accessed through different thermomagnetic cycling.
A detailed elastic neutron scattering study of the structural and magnetic phase transitions in single-crystal SrFe$_2$As$_2$ reveals that the orthorhombic (O)-tetragonal (T) and the antiferromagnetic transitions coincide at $T_texttt{O}$ = $T_texttt {N}$ = (201.5 $pm$ 0.25) K. The observation of coexisting O-T phases over a finite temperature range at the transition and the sudden onset of the O distortion provide strong evidences that the structural transition is first order. The simultaneous appearance and disappearance within 0.5 K upon cooling and within 0.25 K upon warming, respectively, indicate that the magnetic and structural transitions are intimately coupled. We find that the hysteresis in the transition temperature extends over a 1-2 K range. Based on the observation of a remnant orthorhombic phase at temperatures higher than emph{T}$_texttt{O}$, we suggest that the T-O transition may be an order-disorder transition.
The vortex-lattice melting transitions in two typical iron-based high-Tc superconductor $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$ (122-type) and$Nd(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs$ (1111-type) for magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the anisotropy axis are stu died within the elastic theory. Using the parameters from experiments, the vortex-lattice melting lines in the H-T diagram are located systematically by various groups of Lindemann numbers. It is observed that the theoretical result for the vortex melting on $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$ for parallel fields agrees well the recent experimental data. The future experimental results for the vortex melting can be compared with the present theoretical prediction by tuning reasonable Lindemann numbers.
Quantum fluids refer to a class of systems that remain in fluid state down to absolute zero temperature. In this letter, using a combination of magnetotransport and scanning tunneling spectroscopy down to 300 mK, we show that vortices in a very weakl y pinned a-MoGe thin film can form a quantum vortex fluid. Under the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the film, the vortex state transforms from a vortex solid to a hexatic vortex fluid and eventually to an isotropic vortex liquid. The fact that the two latter states remain fluid down to absolute zero temperature is evidenced from the electrical resistance which saturates to a finite value at low temperatures. Furthermore, scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal a soft gap at the center of each vortex, which arises from large zero point fluctuation of vortices.
Neutron diffraction measurements of a high quality single crystal of CaFe2As2 are reported. A sharp transition was observed between the high temperature tetragonal and low temperature orthorhombic structures at TS = 172.5K (on cooling) and 173.5K (on warming). Coincident with the structural transition we observe a rapid, but continuous, ordering of the Fe moments, in a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure is observed, with a saturated moment of 0.80(5)muB/Fe directed along the orthorhombic a-axis. The hysteresis of the structural transition is 1K between cooling and warming and is consistent with previous thermodynamic, transport and single crystal x-ray studies. The temperature onset of magnetic ordering shifts rigidly with the structural transition providing the clearest evidence to date of the coupling between the structural and magnetic transitions in this material and the broader class of iron arsenides.
