We investigate the singularities of the trace of the half-wave group, $mathrm{Tr} , e^{-itsqrtDelta}$, on Euclidean surfaces with conical singularities $(X,g)$. We compute the leading-order singularity associated to periodic orbits with successive degenerate diffractions. This result extends the previous work of the third author cite{Hil} and the two-dimensional case of the work of the first author and Wunsch cite{ForWun} as well as the seminal result of Duistermaat and Guillemin cite{DuiGui} in the smooth setting. As an intermediate step, we identify the wave propagators on $X$ as singular Fourier integral operators associated to intersecting Lagrangian submanifolds, originally developed by Melrose and Uhlmann cite{MelUhl}.

We revisit the paper [Mel86] by R. Melrose, providing a full proof of the main theorem on propagation of singularities for subelliptic wave equations, and linking this result with sub-Riemannian geometry. This result asserts that singularities of sub elliptic wave equations only propagate along null-bicharacteristics and abnormal extremal lifts of singular curve. As a new consequence, for x = y and denoting by K G the wave kernel, we obtain that the singular support of the distribution t $rightarrow$ K G (t, x, y) is included in the set of lengths of the normal geodesics joining x and y, at least up to the time equal to the minimal length of a singular curve joining x and y.
Linear and nonlinear mechanisms for conical wave propagation in two-dimensional lattices are explored in the realm of phononic crystals. As a prototypical example, a statically compressed granular lattice of spherical particles arranged in a hexagona l packing configuration is analyzed. Upon identifying the dispersion relation of the underlying linear problem, the resulting diffraction properties are considered. Analysis both via a heuristic argument for the linear propagation of a wavepacket, as well as via asymptotic analysis leading to the derivation of a Dirac system suggests the occurrence of conical diffraction. This analysis is valid for strong precompression i.e., near the linear regime. For weak precompression, conical wave propagation is still possible, but the resulting expanding circular wave front is of a non-oscillatory nature, resulting from the complex interplay between the discreteness, nonlinearity and geometry of the packing. The transition between these two types of propagation is explored.
Let $(X,g)$ be a compact manifold with conic singularities. Taking $Delta_g$ to be the Friedrichs extension of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, we examine the singularities of the trace of the half-wave group $e^{- i t sqrt{ smash[b]{Delta_g}}}$ arisin g from strictly diffractive closed geodesics. Under a generic nonconjugacy assumption, we compute the principal amplitude of these singularities in terms of invariants associated to the geodesic and data from the cone point. This generalizes the classical theorem of Duistermaat-Guillemin on smooth manifolds and a theorem of Hillairet on flat surfaces with cone points.
We establish propagation of singularities for the semiclassical Schrodinger equation, where the potential is conormal to a hypersurface. We show that semiclassical wavefront set propagates along generalized broken bicharacteristics, hence reflection of singularities may occur along trajectories reaching the hypersurface transversely. The reflected wavefront set is weaker, however, by a power of $h$ that depends on the regularity of the potential. We also show that for sufficiently regular potentials, wavefront set may not stick to the hypersurface, but rather detaches from it at points of tangency to travel along ordinary bicharacteristics.
We study the propagator of the wave equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $M$. We propose a geometric approach to the construction of the propagator as a single oscillatory integral global both in space and in time with a distinguished complex-val ued phase function. This enables us to provide a global invariant definition of the full symbol of the propagator - a scalar function on the cotangent bundle - and an algorithm for the explicit calculation of its homogeneous components. The central part of the paper is devoted to the detailed analysis of the subprincipal symbol; in particular, we derive its explicit small time asymptotic expansion. We present a general geometric construction that allows one to visualise topological obstructions and describe their circumvention with the use of a complex-valued phase function. We illustrate the general framework with explicit examples in dimension two.
