We have newly identified a substantial number of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) featuring weak broad-line regions (BLRs) at z < 0.2 from detailed analysis of galaxy spectra in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. These objects predominantly show a stellar continuum but also a broad H-alpha emission line, indicating the presence of a low-luminosity AGN oriented so that we are viewing the central engine directly without significant obscuration. These accreting black holes have previously eluded detection due to their weak nature. The new BLR AGNs we found increased the number of known type 1 AGNs by 49%. Some of these new BLR AGNs were detected at the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and their X-ray properties confirm that they are indeed type 1 AGN. Based on our new and more complete catalogue of type 1 AGNs, we derived the type 1 fraction of AGNs as a function of [OIII] 5007 emission luminosity and explored the possible dilution effect on the obscured AGN due to star-formation. The new type 1 AGN fraction shows much more complex behavior with respect to black hole mass and bolometric luminosity than suggested by the existing receding torus model. The type 1 AGN fraction is sensitive to both of these factors, and there seems to be a sweet spot (ridge) in the diagram of black hole mass and bolometric luminosity. Furthermore, we present a hint that the Eddington ratio plays a role in determining the opening angles.

We report the virial measurements of the BH mass of a sample of 17 type 2 AGN, drawn from the Swift/BAT 70-month 14-195 keV hard X-ray catalogue, where a faint BLR component has been measured via deep NIR (0.8-2.5 $mu$m) spectroscopy. We compared the type 2 AGN with a control sample of 33 type 1 AGN. We find that the type 2 AGN BH masses span the 5$<$ log(M$_{BH}$ /M$_{odot}$) $< $7.5 range, with an average log(M$_{BH}$/M$_{odot}$) = 6.7, which is $sim$ 0.8 dex smaller than found for type 1 AGN. If type 1 and type 2 AGN of the same X-ray luminosity log($L_{14-195}$/erg s$^{-1}$) $sim$ 43.5 are compared, type 2 AGN have 0.5 dex smaller BH masses than type 1 AGN. Although based on few tens of objects, this result disagrees with the standard AGN unification scenarios in which type 1 and type 2 AGN are the same objects observed along different viewing angles with respect to a toroidal absorbing material.

We use a sample of active galaxies from the Cosmic Evolution Survey to show that host galaxy morphology is tied to the accretion rate and X-ray obscuration of its active galactic nucleus (AGN). Unobscured and rapidly accreting broad-line AGNs are mor e likely to be in spheroid-dominated hosts than weak or obscured AGNs, and obscured AGNs are more likely to have disturbed host galaxies. Much of the disagreement in previous work on the AGN-merger connection is likely due to each study probing AGNs with different obscuration and accretion properties. Only obscured AGNs seem to merger-driven, while weak AGNs are fed by stochastic processes in disks, and rapidly-accreting broad-line AGNs require massive bulges. Our observed unified model for AGN hosts fits with theoretical models for merger-driven AGN evolution, but is also consistent with steady-state AGN activity.
We explore the relationship between X-ray absorption and optical obscuration within the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) which has been collecting and analyzing the optical and X-ray spectra for 641 hard X-ray selected ($E>14$ keV) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We use the deviation from a linear broad H$alpha$-to-X-ray relationship as an estimate of the maximum optical obscuration towards the broad line region and compare the $A_{rm V}$ to the hydrogen column densities ($N_{rm H}$) found through systematic modeling of their X-ray spectra. We find that the inferred columns implied by $A_{rm V}$ towards the broad line region (BLR) are often orders of magnitude less than the columns measured towards the X-ray emitting region indicating a small scale origin for the X-ray absorbing gas. After removing 30% of Sy 1.9s that potentially have been misclassified due to outflows, we find that 86% (164/190) of the Type 1 population (Sy 1--1.9) are X-ray unabsorbed as expected based on a single obscuring structure. However, 14% (26/190), of which 70% (18/26) are classified as Sy 1.9, are X-ray absorbed, suggesting the broad line region itself is providing extra obscuration towards the X-ray corona. The fraction of X-ray absorbed Type 1 AGN remains relatively constant with AGN luminosity and Eddington ratio, indicating a stable broad line region covering fraction.
We present a deep study of the average hard X-ray spectra of Seyfert galaxies. We analyzed all public INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI data available on all the 165 Seyfert galaxies detected at z<0.2. Our final sample consists of 44 Seyfert 1s, 29 Seyfert 1.5s, 7 8 Seyfert 2s, and 14 Narrow Line Seyfert 1s. We derived the average hard X-ray spectrum of each subsample in the 17-250keV energy range. All classes of Seyfert galaxies show on average the same nuclear continuum, as foreseen by the zeroth order unified model, with a cut-off energy of Ec>200keV, and a photon index of Gamma ~1.8. Compton-thin Seyfert 2s show a reflection component stronger than Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 1.5s. Most of this reflection is due to mildly obscured (10^23 cm^-2 < NH < 10^24 cm^-2) Seyfert 2s, which have a significantly stronger reflection component (R=2.2^{+4.5}_{-1.1}) than Seyfert 1s (R<=0.4), Seyfert 1.5s (R<= 0.4) and lightly obscured (NH < 10^23 cm^-2) Seyfert 2s (R<=0.5). This cannot be explained easily by the unified model. The absorber/reflector in mildly obscured Seyfert 2s might cover a large fraction of the X-ray source, and have clumps of Compton-thick material. The large reflection found in the spectrum of mildly obscured Seyfert 2s reduces the amount of Compton-thick objects needed to explain the peak of the cosmic X-ray background. Our results are consistent with the fraction of Compton-thick sources being ~10%. The spectra of Seyfert 2s with and without polarized broad lines do not show significant differences, the only difference between the two samples being the higher hard X-ray and bolometric luminosity of Seyfert 2s with polarized broad lines. The average hard X-ray spectrum of Narrow line Seyfert 1s is steeper than those of Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 1.5s, probably due to a lower energy of the cutoff.
We present a detailed study of ionized outflows in a large sample of ~650 hard X-ray detected AGN. Using optical spectroscopy from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) we are able to reveal the faint wings of the [OIII] emission lines associated w ith outflows covering, for the first time, an unexplored range of low AGN bolometric luminosity at low redshift (z~0.05). We test if and how the incidence and velocity of ionized outflow is related to AGN physical parameters: black hole mass, gas column density, Eddington Ratio, [OIII], X-ray, and bolometric luminosities. We find a higher occurrence of ionized outflows in type 1.9 (55%) and type 1 AGN (46%) with respect to type 2 AGN (24%). While outflows in type 2 AGN are evenly balanced between blue and red velocity offsets with respect to the [OIII] narrow component, they are almost exclusively blueshifted in type 1 and type 1.9 AGN. We observe a significant dependence between the outflow occurrence and accretion rate, which becomes relevant at high Eddington ratios (> -1.7). We interpret such behaviour in the framework of covering factor-Eddington ratio dependence. We dont find strong trends of the outflow maximum velocity with AGN physical parameters, as an increase with bolometric luminosity can be only identified when including samples of AGN at high luminosity and high redshift taken from literature.
