The study of entrywise powers of matrices was originated by Loewner in the pursuit of the Bieberbach conjecture. Since the work of FitzGerald and Horn (1977), it is known that $A^{circ alpha} := (a_{ij}^alpha)$ is positive semidefinite for every entrywise nonnegative $n times n$ positive semidefinite matrix $A = (a_{ij})$ if and only if $alpha$ is a positive integer or $alpha geq n-2$. This surprising result naturally extends the Schur product theorem, and demonstrates the existence of a sharp phase transition in preserving positivity. In this paper, we study when entrywise powers preserve positivity for matrices with structure of zeros encoded by graphs. To each graph is associated an invariant called its critical exponent, beyond which every power preserves positivity. In our main result, we determine the critical exponents of all chordal/decomposable graphs, and relate them to the geometry of the underlying graphs. We then examine the critical exponent of important families of non-chordal graphs such as cycles and bipartite graphs. Surprisingly, large families of dense graphs have small critical exponents that do not depend on the number of vertices of the graphs.

For a connected graph $G:=(V,E)$, the Steiner distance $d_G(X)$ among a set of vertices $X$ is the minimum size among all the connected subgraphs of $G$ whose vertex set contains $X$. The $k-$Steiner distance matrix $D_k(G)$ of $G$ is a matrix whose rows and columns are indexed by $k-$subsets of $V$. For $k$-subsets $X_1$ and $X_2$, the $(X_1,X_2)-$entry of $D_k(G)$ is $d_G(X_1 cup X_2)$. In this paper, we show that the rank of $2-$Steiner distance matrix of a caterpillar graph on $N$ vertices and with $p$ pendant veritices is $2N-p-1$.
We define three new pebbling parameters of a connected graph $G$, the $r$-, $g$-, and $u$-critical pebbling numbers. Together with the pebbling number, the optimal pebbling number, the number of vertices $n$ and the diameter $d$ of the graph, this yi elds 7 graph parameters. We determine the relationships between these parameters. We investigate properties of the $r$-critical pebbling number, and distinguish between greedy graphs, thrifty graphs, and graphs for which the $r$-critical pebbling number is $2^d$.
Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $G$ has chromatic number $k$ but every pro per induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there is a polynomial-time algorithm to decide if a graph in the class is $(k-1)$-colorable. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of the finiteness of $k$-vertex-critical graphs in subclasses of $P_5$-free graphs. Our main result is a complete classification of the finiteness of $k$-vertex-critical graphs in the class of $(P_5,H)$-free graphs for all graphs $H$ on 4 vertices. To obtain the complete dichotomy, we prove the finiteness for four new graphs $H$ using various techniques -- such as Ramsey-type arguments and the dual of Dilworths Theorem -- that may be of independent interest.
We consider the bond percolation problem on a transient weighted graph induced by the excursion sets of the Gaussian free field on the corresponding cable system. Owing to the continuity of this setup and the strong Markov property of the field on th e one hand, and the links with potential theory for the associated diffusion on the other, we rigorously determine the behavior of various key quantities related to the (near-)critical regime for this model. In particular, our results apply in case the base graph is the three-dimensional cubic lattice. They unveil the values of the associated critical exponents, which are explicit but not mean-field and consistent with predictions from scaling theory below the upper-critical dimension.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces for graphs and the Gram matrices associated with them. Our aim is to investigate the Gram matrices of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We provide several bounds on the entr ies of the Gram matrices of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and characterize the graphs which attain our bounds.
