We present the rest-frame optical spectral properties of 155 luminous quasars at 3.3<z<6.4 taken with the AKARI space telescope, including the first detection of H$alpha$ emission line as far out as z~6. We extend the scaling relation between the rest-frame optical continuum and line luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the high luminosity, high redshift regime that has rarely been probed before. Remarkably, we find that a single log-linear relation can be applied to the 5100${rm AA}$ and H$alpha$ AGN luminosities over a wide range of luminosity (10$^{42}$<$L_{5100}$<10$^{47}$ergs/s) or redshift (0<z<6), suggesting that the physical mechanism governing this relation is unchanged from z=0 to 6, over five decades in luminosity. Similar scaling relations are found between the optical and the UV continuum luminosities or line widths. Applying the scaling relations to the H$beta$ black hole mass ($M_{rm BH}$) estimator of local AGNs, we derive the $M_{rm BH}$ estimators based on H$alpha$, MgII, and CIV lines, finding that the UV-line based masses are overall consistent with the Balmer-line based, but with a large intrinsic scatter of 0.40dex for the CIV estimates. Our 43 $M_{rm BH}$ estimates from H$alpha$ confirm the existence of BHs as massive as ~10$^{10}M_{odot}$ out to z~5, and provide a secure footing for previous MgII-line based studies that a rapid $M_{rm BH}$ growth has occurred in the early universe.

We present the analysis of the rest-frame optical-to-UV spectrum of APM 08279+5255, a well-known lensed broad absorption line (BAL) quasar at $z = 3.911$. The spectroscopic data are taken with the optical DOLoRes and near-IR NICS instruments at TNG, and include the previously unexplored range between C III] $lambda$1910 and [O III] $lambdalambda$4959,5007. We investigate the possible presence of multiple BALs by computing balnicity and absorption indexes (i.e. BI, BI$_0$ and AI) for the transitions Si IV $lambda$1400, C IV $lambda$1549, Al III $lambda$1860 and Mg II $lambda$2800. No clear evidence for the presence of absorption features is found in addition to the already known, prominent BAL associated to C IV, which supports a high-ionization BAL classification for APM 08279+5255. We also study the properties of the [O III], H$beta$ and Mg II emission lines. We find that [O III] is intrinsically weak ($F_{rm [OIII]}/F_{rm Hbeta} lesssim 0.04$), as it is typically found in luminous quasars with a strongly blueshifted C IV emission line ($sim$2500 km s$^{-1}$ for APM 08279+5255). We compute the single-epoch black hole mass based on Mg II and H$beta$ broad emission lines, finding $M_{rm BH} = (2 div 3) times 10^{10}mu^{-1}$ M$_odot$, with the magnification factor $mu$ that can vary between 4 and 100 according to CO and rest-frame UV-to-mid-IR imaging respectively. Using a Mg II equivalent width (EW)-to-Eddington ratio relation, the EW$_{rm MgII} sim 27$ AA measured for APM 08279+5255 translates into an Eddington ratio of $sim$0.4, which is more consistent with $mu=4$. This magnification factor also provides a value of $M_{rm BH}$ that is consistent with recent reverberation-mapping measurements derived from C IV and Si IV.

We present the results of new infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars at z~3, selected based on the optical r-band magnitude and the availability of nearby bright stars for future imaging follow-up with Adaptive Optics system. The supermass ive black hole (SMBH) masses (M_BH) were successfully estimated in 28 out of 37 observed objects from the combination of the H_beta emission linewidth and continuum luminosity at rest-frame 5100A. Comparing these results with those from previous studies of quasars with similar redshift, our sample exhibited slightly lower (~ -0.11 dex in median) Eddington ratios; and, the SMBH masses are slightly (~ 0.38 dex in median) higher. The SMBH growth time, t_grow, was calculated by dividing the estimated SMBH mass by the mass accretion rate measured using optical luminosity. We found, given reasonable assumptions, that t_grow was smaller than the age of the universe at the redshift of individual quasars for a large fraction of observed sources, suggesting that the SMBHs in many of our observed quasars are in growing phase with high accretion rates. A comparison of the SMBH masses derived from our H_beta data and archived CIV data indicated considerable scattering, as indicated in previous studies. All quasars with measured SMBH masses have at least one nearby bright star, such that they are suitable targets for adaptive optics observations to study the mass relationship between SMBHs and host galaxies stellar component at high redshift.
We present Keck II NIRSPEC rest-frame optical spectra for three recently discovered lensed galaxies: the Cosmic Horseshoe (z = 2.38), the Clone (z = 2.00), and SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 (z = 2.26). The boost in signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) from gravita tional lensing provides an unusually detailed view of the physical conditions in these objects. A full complement of high S/N rest-frame optical emission lines is measured, spanning from rest-frame 3600 to 6800AA, including robust detections of fainter lines such as H-gamma, [SII]6717,6732, and in one instance [NeII]3869. SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 shows evidence for AGN activity, and therefore we focus our analysis on star-forming regions in the Cosmic Horseshoe and the Clone. For these two objects, we estimate a wide range of physical properties, including star-formation rate (SFR), metallicity, dynamical mass, and dust extinction. In all respects, the lensed objects appear fairly typical of UV-selected star-forming galaxies at z~2. The Clone occupies a position on the emission-line diagnostic diagram of [OIII]/H-beta vs. [NII]/H-alpha that is offset from the locations of z~0 galaxies. Our new NIRSPEC measurements may provide quantitative insights into why high-redshift objects display such properties. From the [SII] line ratio, high electron densities (~1000 cm^(-3)) are inferred compared to local galaxies, and [OIII]/[OII] line ratios indicate higher ionization parameters compared to the local population. Building on previous similar results at z~2, these measurements provide further evidence (at high S/N) that star-forming regions are significantly different in high-redshift galaxies, compared to their local counterparts (abridged).
We compare the rest-frame ultraviolet and rest-frame optical morphologies of 2 < z < 3 star-forming galaxies in the GOODS-S field using Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 and ACS images from the CANDELS, GOODS, and ERS programs. We show that the distributio n of sizes and concentrations for 1.90 < z < 2.35 galaxies selected via their rest-frame optical emission-lines are statistically indistinguishable from those of Lyman-alpha emitting systems found at z ~ 2.1 and z ~ 3.1. We also show that the z > 2 star-forming systems of all sizes and masses become smaller and more compact as one shifts the observing window from the UV to the optical. We argue that this offset is due to inside-out galaxy formation over the first ~ 2 Gyr of cosmic time.
X-shooter, with its characteristics of resolution, spectral coverage and efficiency, provides a unique opportunity to obtain spectra of the highest-redshift quasars (z ~ 6) that will allow us to carry out successful investigations on key cosmological issues, from the details of the re-ionization process, to the evolution of the first galaxies and AGNs. In this paper, we present the spectra of three z ~ 6 quasars: one obtained during the commissioning of X-shooter and two in the context of our ongoing GTO programme. Combining this sample with data in the literature, we update the value of the C IV cosmic mass density in the range 4.5 < z < 5, confirming the constant trend with redshift between 2.5 and 5.
