We derive a fine-grained uncertainty relation for the measurement of two incompatible observables on a single quantum system of continuous variables, and show that continuous variable systems are more uncertain than discrete variable systems. Using the derived fine-grained uncertainty relation, we formulate stronger steering criterion that is able to reveal the steerability of N00N states that has hitherto not been possible using other criteria. We further obtain a monogamy relation for our steering inequality which leads to an, in principle, improved lower bound on the secret key rate of a one-sided device independent quantum key distribution protocol for continuous variables.

We introduce a weak form of the realignment separability criterion which is particularly suited to detect continuous-variable entanglement and is physically implementable (it requires linear optics transformations and homodyne detection). Moreover, w e define a family of states, called Schmidt-symmetric states, for which the weak realignment criterion reduces to the original formulation of the realignment criterion, making it even more valuable as it is easily computable especially in higher dimensions. Then, we focus in particular on Gaussian states and introduce a filtration procedure based on noiseless amplification or attenuation, which enhances the entanglement detection sensitivity. In some specific examples, it does even better than the original realignment criterion.
The UV/optical variation, likely driven by accretion disc turbulence, is a defining characteristic of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars. In this work we investigate an interesting consequence of such turbulence using quasars in SDSS St ripe 82 for which the measurements of the UV/optical variability amplitude are available from $sim$ 10 years long light curves. We discover positive correlations between UV/optical variability amplitude $sigma_{rms}$ and equivalent widths of CIV, Mg II and [OIII]5007 emission lines. Such correlations remain statistically robust through partial correlation analyses, i.e., after controlling the effects of other variables including bolometric luminosity, central supermassive black hole mass, Eddington ratio and redshift. This, for the first time, indicates a causal link between disc turbulence and emission line production. We propose two potential underlying mechanisms both of which may be involved: 1) quasars with stronger disc turbulence have on average bluer/harder broadband SED, an expected effect of the disc thermal fluctuation model; 2) stronger disc turbulence could lead to launch of emission line regions with larger covering factors.
We investigate permutation-invariant continuous variable quantum states and their covariance matrices. We provide a complete characterization of the latter with respect to permutation-invariance, exchangeability and representing convex combinations o f tensor power states. On the level of the respective density operators this leads to necessary criteria for all these properties which become necessary and sufficient for Gaussian states. For these we use the derived results to provide de Finetti-type theorems for various distance measures.

Entanglement is one of the most fascinating features arising from quantum-mechanics and of great importance for quantum information science. Of particular interest are so-called hybrid-entangled states which have the intriguing property that they con tain entanglement between different degrees of freedom (DOFs). However, most of the current continuous variable systems only exploit one DOF and therefore do not involve such highly complex states. We break this barrier and demonstrate that one can exploit squeezed cylindrically polarized optical modes to generate continuous variable states exhibiting entanglement between the spatial and polarization DOF. We show an experimental realization of these novel kind of states by quantum squeezing an azimuthally polarized mode with the help of a specially tailored photonic crystal fiber.

We study the `local entanglement remaining after filtering operations corresponding to imperfect measurements performed by one or both parties, such that the parties can only determine whether or not the system is located in some region of space. The local entanglement in pure states of general bipartite multidimensional continuous-variable systems can be completely determined through simple expressions. We apply our approach to semiclassical WKB systems, multi-dimensional harmonic oscillators, and a hydrogen atom as three examples.
