The external forward shock (EFS) models have been the standard paradigm to interpret the broad-band afterglow data of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). One prediction of the models is that some afterglow temporal breaks at different energy bands should be achromatic. Observations in the Swift era have revealed chromatic afterglow behaviors at least in some GRBs, casting doubts on the EFS origin of GRB afterglows. In this paper, we perform a systematic study to address the question: how bad/good are the external forward shock models? Our sample includes 85 GRBs well-monitored X-ray and optical lightcurves. Based on how well the data abide by the EFS models, we categorize them as: Gold sample: (Grade I and II) include 45/85 GRBs. They show evidence of, or are consistent with having, an achromatic break. The temporal/spectral behaviors in each afterglow segment are consistent with the predictions (closure relations) of the EFS models. Silver sample: (Grade III and IV) include 37/85 GRBs. They are also consistent with having an achromatic break, even though one or more afterglow segments do not comply with the closure relations. Bad sample: (Grade V), 3/85 shows direct evidence of chromatic behaviors, suggesting that the EFS models are inconsistent with the data. These are included in the Bad sample. We further perform statistical analyses of various observational properties ($alpha$, $beta$, $t_b$ and model parameters (energy injection index q, p, $theta_j$, $eta_gamma$, etc) of the GRBs in the Gold Sample, and derive constraints on the magnetization parameter $epsilon_B$ in the EFS. Overall, we conclude that the simplest EFS models can account for the multi-wavelength afterglow data of at least half of the GRBs. When more advanced modeling (e.g., long-lasting reverse shock, structured jets) is invoked, up to $>90 %$ of the afterglows may be interpreted within the framework of the ESF models.

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) 120729A was detected by Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM, and then rapidly observed by Swift/XRT, Swift/UVOT, and ground-based telescopes. It had a single long and smooth gamma-ray emission pulse, which extends continuously to the X-rays . We report Lick/KAIT observations of the source, and make temporal and spectral joint fits of the multiwavelength light curves of GRB 120729A. It exhibits achromatic light-curve behavior, consistent with the predictions of the external shock model. The light curves are decomposed into four typical phases: onset bump (Phase I), normal decay (Phase II), shallow decay (Phase III), and post-jet break (Phase IV). The spectral energy distribution (SED) evolves from prompt gamma-ray emission to the afterglow with photon index from $Gamma_{rm gamma}=1.36$ to $Gamma approx 1.75$. There is no obvious evolution of the SED during the afterglow. The multiwavelength light curves from gamma-ray to optical can be well modeled with an external shock by considering energy injection, and a time-dependent microphysics model with $epsilon_Bpropto t^{alpha_B}$ for the emission at early times, $T < T_{rm 0} + 157$~s. Therefore, we conclude that both the prompt gamma-ray emission and afterglow of GRB 120729A have the same external shock physical origin. Our model indicates that the $epsilon_B$ evolution can be described as a broken power-law function with $alpha_{rm B,1} = 0.18 pm 0.04$ and $alpha_{rm B,2} = 0.84 pm 0.04$. We also systematically investigate single-pulse GRBs in the Swift era, finding that only a small fraction of GRBs (GRBs 120729A, 051111, and 070318) are likely to originate from an external shock for both the prompt gamma-ray emission and afterglow.
We study the ensemble of linear polarization measurement in the optical afterglows of long-duration gamma-ray bursts. We assume a non sideways-expanding top-hat jet geometry and use the relatively large number of measurements under the assumption tha t they represent a statistically unbiased sample. This allows us to constrain the ratio between the maximum predicted polarization and the measured one, which is an indicator of the geometry of the magnetic field in the downstream region of the external shock. We find that the measured polarization is substantially suppressed with respect to the maximum possible for either a completely ordered magnetic field parallel to the shock normal or to a field that is entirely contained in the shock plane. The measured polarization is limited, on average, to between 25 and 30% of the maximum theoretically possible value. This reduction requires the perpendicular component of the magnetic field to be dominant in energy with respect to the component parallel to the shock front, as expected for a shock generated and/or shock compressed field. We find, however, that the data only marginally support the assumption of a simple top-hat jet, pointing towards a more complex geometry for the outflow.

Aims: We characterize a sample of Gamma-Ray Bursts with low luminosity X-ray afterglows (LLA GRBs), and study their properties. Method: We select a sample consisting of the 12% faintest X-ray afterglows from the total population of long GRBs (lGRBs) with known redshift. We study their intrinsic properties (spectral index, decay index, distance, luminosity, isotropic radiated energy and peak energy) to assess whether they belong to the same population than the brighter afterglow events. Results: We present strong evidences that these events belong to a population of nearby events, different from that of the general population of lGRBs. These events are faint during their prompt phase, and include the few possible outliers of the Amati relation. Out of 14 GRB-SN associations, 9 are in LLA GRB sample, prompting for caution when using SN templates in observational and theoretical models for the general lGRBs population.
The synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission from Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) forward shock can extend to the very-high-energy (VHE; $E_gamma > $100 GeV) range. Such high energy photons are rare and are attenuated by the cosmic infrared background before re aching us. In this work, we discuss the prospect to detect these VHE photons using the current ground-based Cherenkov detectors. Our calculated results are consistent with the upper limits obtained with several Cherenkov detectors for GRB 030329, GRB 050509B, and GRB 060505 during the afterglow phase. For 5 bursts in our nearby GRB sample (except for GRB 030329), current ground-based Cherenkov detectors would not be expected to detect the modeled VHE signal. Only for those very bright and nearby bursts like GRB 030329, detection of VHE photons is possible under favorable observing conditions and a delayed observation time of $la$10 hours.
The discovery of a number of gamma-ray bursts with duration exceeding 1,000 seconds, in particular the exceptional case of GRB 111209A with a duration of about 25,000 seconds, has opened the question on whether these bursts form a new class of source s, the so called {em ultra-long} GRBs, or if they are rather the tail of the distribution of the standard long GRB duration. In this Letter, using the long GRB sample detected by {em Swift}, we investigate on the statistical properties of ultra-long GRBs and compare them with the overall long burst population. We discuss also on the differences observed in their spectral properties. We find that ultra-long GRBs are statistically different from the standard long GRBs with typical burst duration less than 100-500 seconds, for which a Wolf Rayet star progenitor is usually invoked. We interpret this result as an indication that an alternative scenario has to be found in order to explain the ultra-long GRB extreme energetics, as well as the mass reservoir and its size that can feed the central engine for such a long time.
