We study the construction of quasimorphisms on groups acting on trees introduced by Monod and Shalom, that we call median quasimorphisms, and in particular we fully characterise actions on trees that give rise to non-trivial median quasimorphisms. Roughly speaking, either the action is highly transitive on geodesics, it fixes a point in the boundary, or there exists an infinite family of non-trivial median quasimorphisms. In particular, in the last case the second bounded cohomology of the group is infinite dimensional as a vector space. As an application, we show that a cocompact lattice in a product of trees only has trivial quasimorphisms if and only if both closures of the projections on the two factors are locally $infty$-transitive.

This paper addresses questions of quasi-isometric rigidity and classification for fundamental groups of finite graphs of groups, under the assumption that the Bass-Serre tree of the graph of groups has finite depth. The main example of a finite depth graph of groups is one whose vertex and edge groups are coarse Poincare duality groups. The main theorem says that, under certain hypotheses, if G is a finite graph of coarse Poincare duality groups then any finitely generated group quasi-isometric to the fundamental group of G is also the fundamental group of a finite graph of coarse Poincare duality groups, and any quasi-isometry between two such groups must coarsely preserves the vertex and edge spaces of their Bass-Serre trees of spaces. Besides some simple normalization hypotheses, the main hypothesis is the ``crossing graph condition, which is imposed on each vertex group G_v which is an n-dimensional coarse Poincare duality group for which every incident edge group has positive codimension: the crossing graph of G_v is a graph e_v that describes the pattern in which the codimension~1 edge groups incident to G_v are crossed by other edge groups incident to G_v, and the crossing graph condition requires that e_v be connected or empty.
We prove the vanishing of the cup product of the bounded cohomology classes associated to any two Brooks quasimorphisms on the free group. This is a consequence of the vanishing of the square of a universal class for tree automorphism groups.
We simplify the construction of projection complexes due to Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara. To do so, we introduce a sharper version of the Behrstock inequality, and show that it can always be enforced. Furthermore, we use the new setup to prove acylindr icity results for the action on the projection complexes. We also treat quasi-trees of metric spaces associated to projection complexes, and prove an acylindricity criterion in that context as well.

We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain some results about the algebraic structure, analytic properties and measure equivalence rigidity of groups from these classes.
We say that a finitely generated group $G$ has property (QT) if it acts isometrically on a finite product of quasi-trees so that orbit maps are quasi-isometric embeddings. A quasi-tree is a connected graph with path metric quasi-isometric to a tree, and product spaces are equipped with the $ell^1$-metric. As an application of the projection complex techniques, we prove that residually finite hyperbolic groups and mapping class groups have (QT).
