Spin current injection from sputtered yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films into an adjacent platinum layer has been investigated by means of the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effects. Films with a thickness of 83 and 96 nanometers were fabricated by on-axis magnetron rf sputtering at room temperature and subsequent post-annealing. From the frequency dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, the damping constant has been estimated to be $(7.0pm1.0)times 10^{-4}$. Magnitudes of the spin current generated by the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effect are of the same order as values for YIG films prepared by liquid phase epitaxy. The efficient spin current injection can be ascribed to a good YIG|Pt interface, which is confirmed by the large spin-mixing conductance $(2.0pm0.2)times 10^{18}$ m$^{-2}$.

Electrical generation of THz spin waves is theoretically explored in an antiferromangetic nanostrip via the current-induced spin-orbit torque. The analysis based on micromagnetic simulations clearly illustrates that the Neel-vector oscillations excit ed at one end of the magnetic strip can propagate in the form of a traveling wave when the nanostrip axis aligns with the magnetic easy-axis. A sizable threshold is observed in the driving current density or the torque to overcome the unfavorable anisotropy as expected. The generated spin waves are found to travel over a long distance while the angle of rotation undergoes continuous decay in the presence of non-zero damping. The oscillation frequency is tunable via the strength of the spin-orbit torque, reaching the THz regime. Other key characteristics of the spin waves such as the phase and the chirality can also be modulated actively. The simulation results further indicate the possibility of wave-like superposition between the excited spin oscillations, illustrating its application as an efficient source of spin-wave signals for information processing.
We report very efficient spin current generation by the spin Hall effect in the alloy Au0.25Pt0.75, which, as determined by two different direct spin-orbit torque measurements, exhibits a giant internal spin Hall ratio of > 0.58 (anti-damping spin-or bit torque efficiency of ~ 0.35 in bilayers with Co), a relatively low resistivity of ~ 83 uOhm cm, an exceptionally large spin Hall conductivity of > 7.0x10^5 ohm^-1 m^-1, and a spin diffusion length of 1.7 nm. This work establishes Au0.25Pt0.75 as a milestone spin current generator that provides greater energy efficiency than that yet obtained with other heavy metals or with the topological insulators Bi2Se3 and (Bi,Se)2Te3. Our findings should advance spin-orbit torque-based fundamental research and benefit the development of new fast, efficient spin-orbit torque-driven magnetic memories, skyrmion and chiral domain wall devices, and microwave and terahertz emitters.
After one decade of the intensive theoretical and experimental explorations, whether interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) at metallic magnetic interfaces can effectively generate a spin current has remained in dispute. Here, utilizing the Ti/FeCoB bilayers that are unique for the negligible bulk spin Hall effect and the strong tunable ISOC, we establish that there is no significant charge-to-spin conversion at magnetic interfaces via spin-orbit filtering effect or Rashba-Edelstein(-like) effect even when the ISOC is stronger than that of a typical Pt/ferromagnet interface and can promote strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We also find a minimal orbital Hall effect in 3d Ti.
The charge and spin diffusion equations taking into account spin-flip and spin-transfer torque were numerically solved using a finite element method in complex non-collinear geometry with strongly inhomogeneous current flow. As an illustration, spin- dependent transport through a non-magnetic nanoconstriction separating two magnetic layers was investigated. Unexpected results such as vortices of spin-currents in the vicinity of the nanoconstriction were obtained. The angular variations of magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque are strongly influenced by the structure geometry.
Topological materials with large spin-orbit coupling and immunity to disorder-induced symmetry breaking show great promise for efficiently converting charge to spin. Here, we report that long-range disordered sputtered WTex thin films exhibit local c hemical and structural order as those of Weyl semimetal WTe2 and conduction behavior that is consistent with semi-metallic Weyl fermion. We find large charge-to-spin conversion properties and electrical conductivity in thermally annealed sputtered WTex films that are comparable with those in crystalline WTe2 flakes. Besides, the strength of unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance in annealed WTex/Mo/CoFeB heterostructure is 5 to 20 times larger than typical SOT layer/ferromagnet heterostructures reported at room temperature. We further demonstrate room temperature damping-like SOT-driven magnetization switching of in-plane magnetized CoFeB. These large charge-to-spin conversion properties that are robust in the presence of long-range disorder and thermal annealing pave the way for industrial application of a new class of sputtered semimetals.
